PROJECT BACKGROUND
ABSTRACT

THis report illustrate the design process of my ADP final project. With the theme “ Sustaining Humanities” - the key aspect
of the design project is to develop the characteristics and integrate technology, environment and cultural context in the
architectural design. In the process of completing this assisgnment, I have been exposed to various design approaches,
which helps me to understand that architecture is a process of understanding subject matter and thoughtful analysis and
finally effectively address the underlying problems. Through considering the community needs, site context and climate
factors to create architecture which are able to improve the quality of human life and affecting the context of the city. One
of the challenge I faced in this project is to find the balance between creating a new nodes in Jalan Alor while not forgetting
the meaningful background of the street.
INTRODUCTION

The theme of the project - Sustaining humanities is about designing an architecture for people, place and time. The outcome
aims to make a community more livable through a deep and thoughtful studies of human culture and respecting the local
culture. The 5 given sites have the unique culture on its own. We are required to design a building based on one site with a
given programme and typology base on each site respectively. To ensure the sustainability, buildabiltiy and practicability,
issue related with programme, user, site and other regulatory requirements need to be explore.

As mentioned in the given brief, the building must not exceeds 2000 sqm with a minimum height restriction of 3 storeys
and maximum of 5 storeys. The area calculation should include covered circulation space. Part of the brief also required a
basement parking to be included in the building design but the area need not be calculated in the total floor area.
PROJECT AIMS & OBJECTIVES

THe programme I proposed for the cultural hub is digital art experiential center. This programme aims to create and
introduce a new culture and community centre, where the main user, tourist and locals, can explore Jalan Alor on another
perception. It also acts as a breakout space for the local community after work and school hours.

Through this programme, the cultural hub will be presenting the undiscovered side of Jalan Alor to either the first time
visitor or the local community who living a repeating life there. As a street which is constantly changing, it is especially
important f0r the community to understand the event of current and past. With the presence of digital art experiential
center, it is possible to preserve and present the archive of Jalan Alor in a more contemporary way. These archive can also
be inherited for the future generation through the method of digital art.

SITE INVESTIGATION
INTRODUCTION

The site that I have chosen located in Jalan Alor, Kuala Lumpur. In the micro context, it is a corner lots sitting adjacent to
Hotel Nova and Thoy Shan Association. The site location is where the Jalan Alor hustle and bustle starts to ends but on the
bright side, is locates next to the primary path used by tourist to access to Jalan Alor Food Street. Surrounding the site,
DBKl effort to promote the area can be seen making the site another important path to access to Alor Backspace.

Jalan Alor is well known as food paradise and the famous tourist hotspot, as the user group expand, more consideration
need to be included in designing the cultural hub. The major user in the site made up of tourist, local residents, and foreign
worker who works in Jalan Alor food stall.

DESIGN STRATEGIES
MICRO SITE ANALYSIS

Jalan Alor is well known for the food street culture. It locates in the middle of the Golden Triangle of Kuala Lum-
pur, providing various kind of entertainment and food for no matter the tourist or local communities. Hotel, high
and middle end shopping center and nightlife street span around Jalan Alor creating a high flow of visitors to the
street. The site located at the junction of Jalan Alor and Jalan Tong Shin, which is a compulsory path for vehicle to
leave Jalan Alor and pedestrian to enter Jalan Alor. On the other end of the site locates the entrance of Alor Back-
space.

- Given area : 1300 sqm after setback

- Situated between Hotel Nova and Thoy Shan Association
- Views toward Jalan Pudu on ground level and Bukit Bintang City Center, the upcoming commercial and
residential hub
- Majority of user group travel by foot and public transport
- Sidewalk exist for most of the pedestrian path

S.W.O.T. ANALYSIS
STRENGTH WEAKNESS
- High accessibility to public transport such as MRT station and bus station. - One way vehicular driveway

- Multi-user group forms multiple hierarchy. - Vehicular restriction at Jalan Alor at night.

- Various kind of view toward different direction. - Back alleys are not lit well

OPPORTUNITY THREAT
- Face no issue of attracting visitor to the site. - Inconvenient vehicular circulation

- Potential social gathering spot can be diverted into site. - Entrance to site could be confusing for visitors.

- Flexible in orientating the building. - Chances of criminal activities to happen.

PRECEDENT STUDIES
PROGRAMME AND PROJECT BRIEF

Located adjacent to high end shopping district and popular nightlife district, the first impression about Jalan Alor was a
place filled with colours and various culture. The expectation fades a way when the overwhelming sense of food paradise
takes over the street. As a living street which the culture and social is constantly growing, tourists and locals forced to accept
the new identity and reality of Jalan Alor time over time.

Proposing a cultural hub with digital art as programme will therefore provide a platform to capture the living culture if
Kuala Lumpur street. Combining architecture spaces and digital art (AR, VR, holographic projection) to create an
immersive experiential cultural hub presenting the past and present of Jalan Alor. Through series of walkway or a
conversation with virtual character, stimulate the visitors imagination and curiousity to further explore Jalan Alor.

Aside from experiential programs, the cultural hub creates opportunity for the visitor to emotionally invest through
workshop and assistance of artist or currator. For tourist, they can compose their visual and echoic memory toward Jalan
Alor into another form of art piece, reflecting the expectation and reality of the street. Meanwhile for locals, the hub is a
hideout from their dull and repeating routine after work or school hour.

SITE PLANNING STRATEGIES

The site planning strategies emphasize on making the building public enough The shaft (void) acts as the core of building and surround by programme spaces
for visitors to enter. Orientation of entrance to face the current nodes of the site which form a circulation loop to portray the activities inside to the passing by
to divert the public flow into the building. Zoning of services and programme pedestrian. The human movement forms part of the dynamic facade design.
space allows more flexible facade design and also able to hide the negative space
in the building.
ORIENTATION : WIND ANALYSIS & STRATEGIES

As shown on the wind rose diagram, the building facade on south experience the strongest wind. Besides the
venturi effect created in between buildings caused high speed wind on the west and northeast side of
building. Therefore, the building is designed to open up on these directions to capture natural wind breeze.
ORIENTAION : SUN ANALYSIS & STRATEGIES

In response with the site sunlight condition, the facade is designed is

3 levels.

1. The ground floor is open up to natural light and ventilation.

2. Second level, from first floor to second floor, the concrete wall
blocks sunlight from penetrating the building to suit with the
programme of the interior spaces.

3. Glass facade is used to create the transparency but enclosed

condition for air-conditioned space. The roof top terrace is again
open up to natural light but a grid structure is added to create a
continuos rhythm on the facade.
SUSTAINABILITY CONCEPTS

Reflecting Pool

Green roofscape

Landscape

Implementation of green roofscape helps to protect direct solar heat which indirectly provide indoor thermal
comfort. Landscape on the ground floor acts as buffer to seperate the main street and the open space of
building. Beside as part of the experiential journey, the reflecting pool also reduce the temperature in the
building.
