Organics workshop food for thought
After hosting a workshop in mid February, the RDCK
is asking municipal councils and boards if they intend
to participate in a proposed regional-scale composting
program slated to start by 2022. “Organic waste diversion
is a key component of our Resource Recovery Plan
update, which will dictate our operations and capital
work for the next five-plus years,” said Uli Wolf, general
manager of environmental services at the RDCK.
“A regional-scale composting system would provide
numerous environmental and economic benefits for our
entire region, and those benefits are best realized if all the
municipalities are on board.”
Workshop attendees were given an update on the
development and cost estimates of various composting
options. They were also given an overview of the benefits
of organics diversion programs: they help conserve landfill
space, reduce leachate and greenhouse gas emissions, and
produce a useful product in the form of compost.
The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB)
is actively pursuing opportunities for implementation
of food waste organics composting for communities in
the eastern portion of the region, including potentially
partnering with the RDCK on their initiative.

Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional per-
forming soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and
delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a
large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accom-
modate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of
Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process
and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria
are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible
for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

Trail Smoke Eaters and the City of Trail to submit bid for 2021 RBC Cup
The Trail Smoke Eaters and the City of Trail are working
collectively to submit a bid to Hockey Canada in hopes
of hosting the 2021 National Junior A Championship at
the Trail Memorial Centre in May 2021. Bid submissions
from all eligible host teams and committees are due by
April 30, 2019. Hockey Canada will then review the sub-
mitted bids and make their decision in June 2019.

“Hosting the RBC Cup in 2021 would be a great oppor-
tunity for our community,” said Craig Clare, Director of
Hockey & Business Operations for the Trail Smoke Eat-
ers. “Right now, we are focusing on the bid document and
gathering all the information that is required in order to
be considered. We feel our team and community have so
much to offer a tournament of this caliber, but it’s Hockey
Canada’s decision as to which team and city are most suit-
able to host the event.”
The Trail Smoke Eaters and the City of Trail have des-
ignated staff members working diligently on the bid’s
contents and have retained a local graphic designer to
professionally design and format the document. “There
are many financial and operational requirements that
must be included in the bid,” said David Perehudoff, Chief

 Kindness and generosity warm the
coldest night of the year
On Saturday, February 23 the streets of Nelson filled up
with walkers, volunteers and donors. They braved the cold
slippery conditions to come out and support the vital work
of Nelson CARES Society: its Ready for Home program.
Teams were made up of schools, community groups, busi-
nesses, friends and families. Thank you to everyone who
took part. We couldn’t do this event without countless vol-
unteer hours, donations and generous support from the
community.
Thank you to the business community for supporting
this event with our ‘toques around town’ program, and
for the ingredients for the amazing chili. This is the sec-
ond year that we partnered with the Commercial Kitchen
Assistant program students at Selkirk College to make the
chili and this has been a wonderful and yummy partner-
ship. We also received numerous donations to create our
XC Mountain Bike and Trail Running Races gift packs for the biggest team (Wildflower School Walk-
ers), the best fundraising team (Erica’s Avengers), and the
iDIDaRide & Run best fundraising individual (Debbie House).
Our total raised so far is $40,260. This is 115% of our
Saturday, August 10 ~ Kaslo BC $35,000 goal. Nationally we are 49 out of 133 teams. We
beat out locations that are much bigger than us, locations
like Winnipeg, Kelowna, and Montreal downtown! The
website (cnoy.org/nelson) will remain open til March 31st
to take donations to teams or individual walkers. If you
want to donate by cheque please contact Stephanie Myers
and she will help you with this. Let’s see how high we can
get that total!

Columbia Basin Culture Tour
Registration is now open for artists and potential ven-
d ues on the Columbia Basin Culture Tour (CBCT), a cel-
k ebration of culture taking place August 10 & 11, 2019.
Help us make the 11th anniversary tour the best yet!
The CBCT is a self-guided tour showcasing local arts,
culture and heritage offered at no charge to the general
public. “Arts” includes visual, written, performing, media
and inter-arts! Participating as a venue allows you to
really connect with locals, develop a wider audience, edu-
g cate the public about what you do, market your activities,
d and attract visitors to your community.
The CBCT lets visitors visit artists’ studios that may not
regularly be open to the public, purchase work directly
from artists, and visit galleries, museums and cultural
centres to view special displays, archives, demonstrations
r or performances. It is also a chance for them to meet the
people behind the scenes that are such a vital part of our
local culture.
Full colour tour directories will be available free of
r charge to the public as a guide to visit your location. Sig-
nage, posters and postcards are provided to promote your
participation. Display ads and media coverage widely
promote the event, and your web page profile will remain
t for the rest of the year to list your contact info and busi-
u ness hours outside of the event.
Final registration deadline is April 15, 2019 but if you
register by March 31 you will save $10! The fee is $60 for
registration between April 1-April 15.
Participating individuals and venues must be located
in the Canadian Columbia Basin, the southeast corner
r of British Columbia roughly bordered by the communi-
ties of Valemount, Golden, Elkford, Creston, Rossland,
Arrow Lakes and Revelstoke. Although not in the Basin,
the communities of Grand Forks and Christina Lake are

Slocan Valley Grassroots Grammas stand in solidarity
with African grandmothers through the Stephen Lewis
Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign,
a Canadian grassroots response to the crisis faced by Afri-
can grandmothers. Through their own projects, grand-
mothers in Africa support their grandchildren affected
by the HIV & AIDS pandemic.
A limited number of tickets for this fundraiser are

It’s time to sign up your baseball players for the 2019
spring season.
The teams are co-ed and coached by enthusiastic coaches

 School District concerning measles
Parents and guardians concerned about the recent
measles outbreak in Vancouver can be assured that the
ministries of education and health are working together
to mitigate the risk of the measles outbreak to our school
communities.
A message was issued from the ministry to all school
districts in the province indicating that over the coming
weeks the ministry will communicate actions that will
be taken with schools across the province to reduce risk,
such as updating immunization records for measles and
offering catch-up immunization for students.
The Kootenay Lake School District has been in contact
with our local public health office and we were provided
with the following details:
As of March 1, there are no confirmed cases of measles
in the Kootenay Boundary or Interior Health regions.
Immunization - The best way to protect yourself and
your loved ones against measles is to get vaccinated and
ensure vaccinations are up to date.
• Two doses of MMR vaccine offers the best protection
against measles. MMR vaccine is highly effective and safe.
• Contact your local IH public health unit if you are unsure
about your immunization status or to book an appointment
to be immunized. There are health units in Castlegar, Trail,
Nelson, Kaslo, Nakusp and other communities.
Exposure - If you feel you have been exposed to mea-
sles and have symptoms, call your doctor in advance of an
appointment.
• If you visit the emergency department, please put on
a mask at arrival and immediately tell the triage staff that
you think you may have measles so that they can take
precautions.

Karen Elaine Nykiforuk February 11, 1949 - February 28, 2019

It’s with great sadness that we announce the un-
expected passing of Karen Elaine Nykiforuk of
Bonnington, BC.
Karen is survived by her loving husband John
Nykiforuk; children Jeff Nykiforuk and Christine
Schmidt (Aaron Schmidt); and grandsons Jared
and Tyler Nykiforuk and Xander Schmidt
Karen’s extended family include sisters-in-law
Jenny Bain, Nichole Huhn (Otto), Janet Lacey
(Lloyd), Judy Shewchuk (Dave); brothers-in-law
Mike Yakymyshyn and Elmer Nykiforuk (Joan);
brothers Dave Spivak (Wendy), Fred Spivak (Or-
ysia), Nick Spivak (Jan), and Roger Spivak (Gail).
Karen spent 16 years working for ICBC’s Public
Affairs and Road Safety in Nelson and Trail
before retiring in 2007. She enjoyed having coffee
on the sundeck with her soul mate, gardening,
hanging out with her grandkids and trying
new cooking recipes. Karen was known for her
big heart, warm laugh and yummy baking and
always went the extra mile to show her family
how much she cared. Karen has filled our lives
with a lifetime of treasured memories and will be
forever loved and appreciated.
The family would like to express their apprecia-
tion for the professionalism of Beasley Fire Hall’s
First Responders, BC Ambulance, and medical
staff at Kootenay Lake and Kelowna hospitals.
A public viewing was held on March 9, followed
by cremation. A Celebration of Life will be sched-
uled for a later date.

Raising funds for a rock wall
The Association of West Kootenay Rock Climb-
ers (TAWKROC) today announced it has so far raised
$15,000 to put towards the purchase of the Waterline rock
climbing area in Castlegar. This is approximately 20 per-
cent of the total price the current landowners are asking.
The fundraising campaign has now launched into Phase 2,
which focuses on corporate donations and grants.
The Waterline Walls, located off 14th Avenue, are the
most popular sport climbing destination in the West Koo-
tenay region and this past summer the private property
on which they’re located came up for sale. The new own-
ers do not want people climbing on their property but
they are willing to subdivide the land, that includes the
six walls upon which about 70 rock climbing routes are
located, and sell it to the Association. Until an agreement
is reached, climbers are restricted from the property.
Personal donations have made up the bulk of the fun-
draising efforts so far, including one by Castlegar climber
David Bristow for $5,000. Now TAWKROC is seeking
corporate and organization donations and grants and,
in return, will be placing the names of the donators on
a kiosk that will reside on the Waterline Walls property.
Once the subdivision has taken place and the purchase
of Waterline Walls has been completed, TAWKROC will
start discussions with the City of Castlegar and, as they’d
also like to do for Kinnaird Bluffs, set about donating it as
a community recreational park.
TAWKROC was established in 2009 to help promote
outdoor rock climbing in the Kootenay region by main-
taining rock climbing areas. In 2012, TAWKROC became
a chapter of the Climbers’ Access Society of British
Columbia and its directors are now committed to ensur-
ing climbing areas in the Kootenays remain accessible for
