[BEHAVIOUR AND CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT] EDUP3043

Teacher plays a vital role in developing a positive relationship in the classroom. A


positive relationship in the classroom can be retained by having the teacher to memorize
students’ name and call them by their names. It shows the teacher’s effort to know the students
and to have a good relationship with them. It also helps the teacher to control the students’
behaviour as teacher can highlight the good behaviour of them to the class which can raise their
motivation. The problematic students also can be monitored easily when teacher remembers
their names (Haliza & Joy, 2009). The advice that teacher’s give to the problematic students
may be effective and can be accepted by them when teacher remember their names. This
shows that the teacher is really care about them. Students on the other hand, will be proud if the
teacher can remember their name correctly and constantly call their name during the lesson.
This shows that the teacher is paying attention to the students which helps to keep them on
track during teaching and learning session. Therefore, a good relationship between teacher and
students can be build when the teacher remembers their students’ name.

A positive relationship of teacher and students can be nurture by instilling the love of
classroom to the students. This is because, classroom is the place where the imparting of
knowledge occurred and it should be enjoyable and relaxing for the students to obtain the
knowledge (Chong, 2008). Teacher should make the class a fun place for the students as it can
raise their intrinsic motivation to come to the school. By having discussion with the students
about their class motto, management or activity, it may inculcate the love to the class among the
students. It also will encourage the students to have a self-belonging to the class. Teacher also
can guide them to beautify the class by giving ideas, helps and materials that they need.
Teacher may give pictures or articles that suit them to be pasted on the board in the class.
Teacher may also praise the students for their effort of work and achievement. Hence, by giving
the students options, praise and having the discussion and the, a good relationship between
teacher and students can be encouraged.

As an adult, teacher should show more concern toward the students as it also helps in
developing the positive relationship among them. Students are easily touched by the

solicitousness show by the teacher as they will feel secure and safe. Teacher has to be sincere
in taking care of the students as teacher can be a role model to them to do good to others.
Firstly, teacher needs to know the background of every students in the class as they come from
different families. Teacher can do personality test or observe the students’ attitude in order to
know the students better. This can helps teacher to understand the students’ behaviour and
changes. Second, as an adult teacher need to have the attitude of curious about their students,
as students they rarely voice out the problems they have but it can be see clearly through their
action, facial expression and gesture. Therefore, teacher needs to be aware of any changes that
happen and always ask them about their well-being. Third, teacher has to be approachable and
friendly with the students (Haliza & Joy, 2009). Teacher could lend their ear and shoulder for the
students to voice out their problem. Teacher also can ask them to use other medium like email,
letter or message to voice out their feeling if they are shy to face the teacher. Fourth, teacher
should have time to listen to the students as a sign of concern and to help them to solve the
problem. Consequently, teacher has to express their concern toward the students in improving
the positive relationship between them.

Apart from that, teacher can divide the responsibility among the students to boost the
positive relationship of teacher and students. Teacher should impart part of the responsibility to
the students to encourage them to be responsible and also to build a good teacher students
communication which can lead to a positive teacher students relationship. Teacher can tolerate
with the students about their class rule in which it can be discuss together for the sake of both
teacher and students. However, some penalties must be stated in order to control the students’
behaviour. Students will be more responsible in obeying the rules that has been set together
with their teacher as it is a give and take situation for teacher and students. Meanwhile teacher
need to make sure that students are following the rules and always remind them about the rules
that they have set. Teacher also can create the class organization, starting from the class
monitor, assistant monitor, treasurer and other few positions that are needed (Haliza, Rafidah &
Samuel, 2008). This is to encourage students’ involvement in class activity, to enhance
students’ responsibility and increase the communication between them. Thus, a positive
relationship between teacher and students can be boost up.

The latest bully case is the one that happen on 28 August 2016. It involved a boy from
SMK Khir Johari, Sungai Petani that was hit and squash to the wall by 3 senior students

because some misunderstanding that happen between them. As a result, the unlucky boy,
Mohd Anas Amir was coma and had undergone a brain surgery to remove the cold blood from
his brain (Astro Awani, 2016). The problematic students too were in troubles as they being
detained by the police. This case is a serious bully case as the victim might get trauma and it
may affect his life as a student. The other disciplinary problem was the cases that occurred in a
school at Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan were two students were fighting each other in one of the
class at the school. This case happened on 10 of April 2016 and the two students were being
hanged from school immediately (Sokmo, 2016). Another disciplinary problem was the case of
drug dealer which is rising hastily. Statistic shows that, 250 students age 12 and above were
positively involve with drug and the number is raising nowadays (Astro Awani, 2015). School is
the main target to spread the dug that was being supplied from the nearby country.

In the conjunction of the disciplinary problems in classroom, the number of the


disciplinary cases is raising every day. Some students become aggressive and tend to being
rude upon the teacher. They also do bully their friend. The reason this problematic students
become like that could be because they do not want the other students to know their immoral
and unhealthy activities that they do in the school. Sometimes, the misunderstanding upon
some situation also can lead to the bully problem, like the one that happened in SMK Khir Johari
Sungai Petani, Kedah. Actually this problem can be avoided if they the students get the situation
clear and do not take action on their own. Therefore, the role of the teacher is very crucial as
they need to expose to the students to the bully, the causes and the consequences of doing bull
by having talk, seminar and campaign. Sometimes students are not aware of what they are
doing as they are still young and immature. So, teacher needs to always guide them and show
more attention to the students’ behaviour and changes.

In addition, students nowadays are too emotional in which they cannot handle their
problems and emotion well. For instance, the case of students who were fighting in the class

ended when both of them were hanged from school. They also want to be more powerful upon
the friends and force the other students to obey and follow them. They are also jealous
regarding the certain things, praises and attentions that other students get thus, cause them to
become violent and rude. Thus, teacher needs to implement the rules and regulations and take
actions to prevent other fighting case happened. On the other hand, there are also students who
are immature and cannot think of his future by selling and taking drug. Hence, teacher should
take actions by made report to the police as this is a very huge and illegal cases. Teacher
needs to do talk and counseling to the other students as a precautious step to prevent them
from involve in that bad activity.

As a conclusion, teacher plays a very vital role in developing a positive relationship in


the classroom. Teacher can start to have the positive relationship by remembering the students’
name correctly and call them upon their name. Besides, teacher also can instill the love toward
the classroom in order to have a positive relationship with the students. Teacher may show
concern upon the students’ behaviour, changes and problems, as students rarely voice out their
problems to the others. Next, teacher should share some of the responsibility to the students so
that they can be more responsible and able to increase the communication between teacher
and students which lead to the positive relationship among them. As for the disciplinary cases,
teacher should pay more attention to students’ behaviour and changes and need take action to
prevent the disciplinary problem from occur.
