Introduction:
On 15th august we went to a special education center where were we have to
observe the students closely ; who were of different ages and belong to the
different backgrounds. We also have to study the case history of these special
children. The institution was quite big and there were a lot of classes for the
students of different ages. So after the introduction they showed us one of the
class where the students {age ranges from 3 years to 12 years} were sitting and a
female teacher was tackling them some of them were attentive in the class while
the other’s were distracted by many things like class furniture and things in their
surroundings. I first of all communicate with their teacher and the thing which I
found quite impressive was that the teacher is very kind , supportive and
cooperative. So due to this kindness we found ourselves in a very comfortable
position there and we could do our work with more attention and enthusiasm. So I
just sit right beside the teacher and observed all of them some of them do not
know how to do toilet. When I asked teacher about it she told me that we are
giving them the toilet training so that they can learn how to do it on their own and
then I inquired that what else they teach them is their any courses for them? She
told me that they are too small and they didn’t even know how to grab a pencil in
a right position so they just sit in the class and they provide them some activities
and she told me that they regularly do the exercise and they also go to the
assembly where they were taught few words repeatedly so that they could learn
few things. On my first day only a few students interact with me they were shy and
not very talkative then I realize that I have to become friendly with them so they
can interact with me with more confidence. But they were totally comfortable
with the teacher they were very obedient and listen to what the teacher said
them. There were around 12 students in the class and suffering of different mental
and physical disabilities one of them have the cerebral palsy and there was
another who was diagnosed with autism and some other students who had the
various learning disabilities.

Case study of a child:

Client’s Name: Jamal- Dil- Pazeer

Date of Birth: 24-07-2009

Age: 9 years

Gender: male

After few sessions when I was closely observing the whole class I saw a student
who is looking like a completely normal child and he was very calm. So, I asked the
teacher about him teacher said that he was the only student in his class who can
speak not very fast but in bits and pieces and could understand the things. The
teacher also told me that before admitting in this institute he was studying in a
normal school with the other normal peers of his own age but his performance
was not quite impressive there so drop him out. Then his parents came to this
school for his admission and when the experts assessed him he was diagnosed
with learning disability and also have the dyslexia. He find it hard to answer the
certain question and when someone asks him any question he became blank then
you elaborate your question in simple ways and after a few time he become able
to interpret that question and then he answered it. So due to this disability he was
behind his age and only speak a little. But he was calm and relaxed and teacher’s
favorite student.

Family Background :
In this institute I came to know that there are certain rules and one of them that
they didn’t give you the case file but I talk with the teacher so she somehow
managed to show me the case history of that boy. Due to this I learned so much
about that boy his family background and everything. After reading that file I came
to know that jamal have 3 brothers and he’s the middle one his elder have no
issues and the little one is also fine only he has the complexities. After that I came
to know that when her mother was pregnant with him she was sick at that time
and there were also some conflicts between her mother and his father which
impacts the fetus in bad way.
Mother’s Pregnancy Complications:
As her mother said the delivery was normal but during the time of pregnancy she
became sick and also faced some nutritional deficiencies and due to this the child’s
brain didn’t develop normally and have complexities.

Mental Status:
In my next session I asked teacher if I want him to perform some activity like
coloring or draw something then he will be able to do it or not so she replied that
he couldn’t draw so much but some little things so I told him to draw a mango
which he didn’t draw fully but the thing he draw was like mango. So his IQ was not
so much after that I took the Mini Mental State Examination he didn’t answer all
the question but some of them and got 18 marks in this test. He was not disable so
much but of mild type.

Physical and Behavioral Status:

Jamal totally looks like a normal child. He walked fine and there was no tremors in
his body and he was also very obedient and calm student. He also knew how to
take permission when he has to go to toilet and he also do toilet on his own. First
he was shy but after some time he became friendly and he became talkative he
didn’t talk to his peers so much but he talk to his teacher. He was not aggressive at
all and participate in the activities of daily routine.

Observation:
During my whole sessions I closely observed this child and the other students and I
found him better than others he has an elder brother who gave him pick and drop
and he was studying in the 1st year fsc so he also have to study and due to this
most of the time jamal was lonely and had no one to talk to and his parents was
also busy in their lives so he was neglected most of the time which also influence
his mental growth and development. Jamal has a good eye contact he likes to play
cricket his favorite teacher is Miss Shazia. He is emotionally stable he’s not very
distractive. Due to negligence he is underweight and have a short height.
Suggestions/ Recommendations:
In my perspective jamal can do better and he has the ability to learn new things if
one pays attention on him. I think so that the class in which he admitted was not
suitable for him. He should be placed in different in which there is more activities
so he can learn and understand and also there must be speech therapist and
modified course for him so he can learn and the other most important thing is that
the boy needs his parents its their responsibility to give him a good company and
her mother should also pay special attention on him. There should be teachers
who have the experience to how to handle such children but unfortunately there
is no special teacher just ordinary teachers who are unable to perform these steps
that are helpful in child’s development. But if these steps were taken then I would
guarantee that this boy can perform better and even perform like a normal child.
