Updates for the 14th Edition AISC Steel Construction Manual
Combined Forces Slides
See PowerPoint Presentations for the following Combined Forces Slide Revisions:
Combined‐Forces_Manual14th
Slide 1) Title=14th Edition
Slide 2) Revised all content links to new Specification Chapters.
Slide 3) Revised to address new analysis requirements
Slide 4) Deleted and replaced with information to expand on slide 3.
ADDED Slide 5) Revised and moved original slide 39
ADDED Slide 6) Expands on slides 3 and 4.
All numbering below are the original slide numbers (new set shifts by +2) until noted otherwise
Slide 5) Section C2.2b, deleted “to gravity only load combinations”
Slide 6) Deleted – information with corrected values is now on slides 3‐5. Additional information about
higher value of notional load if use 1st order analysis is deleted. This is now in Appendix 7 (A‐7‐2) and it is
felt that this should not be highlighted as a design approach.
All numbering below matches the original slide numbers (new set shifts by 1 (‐1+2) until noted
otherwise
Slide 15) Change “Non‐Symmetric” to “Unsymmetric”
Slide 16) Change “Non‐Symmetric” to “Unsymmetric”
Slide 16) Nomenclature updated to new specification.
Slides 18 and 19) Deleted, covered in slide 5
Slides 20‐36 MOVED to end of File. Numbering below is original slide numbers (new set is shifted by ‐18
(‐17‐1)) until noted otherwise
Slide 37) Chapter callout changed
Slide 38) Section number changed.
MOVED Slide 39) Now new slide 5. These are technically now general requirements, not specifically
Direct Analysis. Text modified slightly. Added statement of when P‐delta can be neglected in analysis.

Compression Forces Slides Updates for the 14th Edition Manual
DELETED Slide 40) New requirements on Slide 39 ‐ Changed from old requirements to “if requirements
of Section C2.1(2) are met”
All numbering below are the original slide numbers (new set shifts by ‐20 (‐2‐18)) until noted otherwise
Combined‐Forces_Manual14th cont.
Slide 41) Revised to clarify stiffness of C2.3 is EA and EI. Deleted reference to notional load (covered
separately now).
DELETE Slide 42) Redundant with original Slide 5.
All numbering below are the original slide numbers (new set shifts by ‐21 (‐1‐20)) until noted otherwise
Slides 43, 44, 45 modified per updated section numbers. Format remains but clarification added that EI
and EA relate to flexural and axial stiffness. On 44 also revised equation to include all italics, Added
equation number.
ADDED Slide 45 (between old 44 and 45) to clarify when taub can be set equal to 1.
Slides 20‐36 MOVED to end of File. Numbering below is original slide numbers (new set is shifted by +8
(+11‐3)).
Slide 20) Section is updated to Appendix 8 and Title of Appendix
Slide 21) Section changed, last bullet deleted, new last bullet added.
Slides 22 and 23) Equation numbers updated and definitions slightly altered.
Slide 24) Equation number updated.
Slide 25) Equation number and table updated
Slide 27) Equation numbers, nomenclature and equations updated. Summation is left in to highlight that
“total load” is the sum of the entire story.
Combined‐Forces_Theory
Slide 3) Added Direct Analysis vs. Traditional Method
Slide 20) added “2nd order analysis theory”
ADDED SLIDES 52, 53 AND 54) These are moved from original slides 67 and 68 with noted changes.
Notional loads are a general concept rather than only applicable to direct analysis.
All numbering below are the original slide numbers (new set shifts by +3) until noted otherwise
Slide 53) Replace “includes” to “additional”

Compression Forces Slides Updates for the 14th Edition Manual
Slides 57 and 58) Change “typical” to “traditional”
Slide 63) Change “previous” to “traditional”
Combined‐Forces_Theory cont.
Slides 64 and 65) Add “additional” for notional loads (notional loads for imperfections requirements of
C2.2 is for all analysis methods)
ADDED NEW SLIDE 67) After the idealized plots of traditional versus direct analysis a slide was added to
note that the calibrations were performed for typical building structures. This was added in part to
justify why a different code may have slightly different notional load and stiffness reduction factor.
More importantly, the two methods can give very different results (depending on loads chosen) for a
cantilever member under axial and lateral load. Differences are emphasized for certain load
combinations. I believe that the traditional method is correct in this case, but these “textbook” cases are
not typical of a building design. In class, however, they are effective at highlighting that designers need
to understand the methods they use and their limitations.
All numbering below are the original slide numbers (new set shifts by 4 (+1+3)) until noted otherwise
Slide 67 and 68) Title changed to Notional Load (not only for Direct Analysis). Added “effect” on 67.
MOVED TO SLIDES 53 AND 54
All numbering below are the original slide numbers (new set shifts by +2 (‐2+4)) until noted otherwise
Slide74) Additional bullets are added about P‐Delta/P‐delta and Approximate solution.
Slide 79) Revised Figure in Design Manual Commentary. Note: this is the only reference to the Manual in
the theory slides, but moving to the spec slides would be out of place with the related material.
Combined‐Forces_Template
Slide 4) Put Direct Analysis first, changed “Alignment Chart” to “Traditional”, added alignment chart
statement under “Traditional” bullet, re‐ordered methods.
ADDED Slide 5) Specifies K factors and approximate 2nd order analysis are not highlighted by the manual.
Slides 6 through 9 modified/changed to match new content of slide sets and flow of AISC Specification.
