Mock United Nations Project

20-1

For this project you have been divided into

different countries (groups).

Your task is to take on the views of the

country on Nuclear Proliferation. YOU
MUST TAKE ON THE COUNTRY’S VIEWS.

This project will have a set due date as you

must debate with other countries in the
class.

The date chosen for the Mock UN is

-------------

You are responsible for the answering the following question according to how your country
would answer:

To what extent should nation-states have autonomy in regard to the development and
production of Nuclear Weapons?

You must provide an argument to this question. The argument must be in-depth and well
researched in order to achieve the best possible results from the Mock UN.

Guiding Questions for Argument:

1. What is the position of the country you represent? This opinion will be your thesis.
2. What are the main points, which you will be arguing? (Should have 3)
3. What proof (case studies, facts, stats, etc) do you have to back up your points?

Things that must be included in your submission before the Mock UN:
1. Pre-Research Sheet (Finished and with all group member’s names on it)
2. Arguments and Case Studies Research (Guiding Questions)
3. Group Evaluation

PLEASE PUT YOUR INFORMATION INTO ONE DOCUMENT AND IN THE ORDER ABOVE
Model UN Research Preparation:

Nuclear Proliferation

Use this sheet to help prepare for your forum on Nuclear Proliferation. These questions,
when answered, will help you to better understand the issue being discussed.
Answering these questions in depth (relevant facts, stats, dates, people, etc.) will be
beneficial for the Mock General Assembly. You are encouraged to go into more depth
than just what is suggested here and add extra information that you find to be of
importance.

Guiding Questions:
What is Nuclear Proliferation?

What is the NPT? Who supports this? Who is opposed? Why is it supported and why is
it opposed?

Why would nations want to restrict the production/development of nuclear weaponry?

Why would nations want to develop/produce nuclear weaponry?

What are some possible courses of action that can be taken when nation-states are
suspected of nuclear weapons development? (Ex. Inspections) Are these effective?

What do you think should be done if countries are found to be developing/producing

nuclear weapons in violation of the NPT?

What was the Nuclear Arms Race of the Cold War?

What were S.A.L.T and S.T.A.R.T? Why did these occur? Is anything like this in effect
today?
