Reply to or Argument Against a Viewpoint

Review
In a democratic classroom, students are encouraged to express their opinions. They are asked to give their views
on certain controversial topics. This area aims specifically at developing the technique of argument and the ability to
provide a balanced point of view.

Technique
The first thing to do is to study the topic carefully. Then you have to make your stand clear, either you are
speaking for or against a motion. Elaborate your points with examples or evidence. Choose the correct tense to use, the
usual tense being the present tense.
The following are useful expressions for you to leam.
Expressions for putting forward an opinion:-
I think.... In my view/opinion ....
To my mind .... Personally, I believe ....
I feel.... It seems to me ....
I am of the opinion that ....
I am convinced that....
My own view of the matter is ....

Expressions for agreeing:-


Yes. Right. Very true.
Yes, I agree .... That's true/right.
I am with you. I think so.
I agree entirely ....
I'm of the same opinion.

Expressions
I disagree.
for disagreeing:- I don't think so.
No.
I don't agree. I don't think........ I can't agree with ....
That's not the way I see it. I think that's nonsense.
