Preschool level.
3. Number of adults-Three adults in the classroom 8 children total, Number of children- two
4. Group time- Ms. Charlie had the children sit on their mats for circle time. She was doing
a letter’s and sound’s activity with the children. She asked the children if they remember what
sound the letter “B” made then the children started to make the sound “B” made. Ms. Charlie
praised the children for knowing the sound. Ms. Charlie explained to the children what they were
going to do with the letter “B” sound, she pulled out two fly swatters and showed the children
how they were going to do the activity, she said if it makes the sound the letter “B” makes we
swat it! If it makes a different sound don’t swat it, she also explains to the children other things
they don’t swat like children and teachers. Ms. Charlie showed the children pictures of things
that started with the letter “B” and made the sound, she swatted the picture of a boy, ball, butter
to show the children how to do it. Then she gave the fly swatter to two children and began to
show them pictures, some with the letter “B” which they swatted and some with different sounds
which most of the children didn’t swat. Each child had a turn to swat the different pictures. Once
all the children had a turn Ms. Charlie moves on to a different letter, next was the letter “D” for
DOG! The children looked like they were enjoying this activity.
5. Appropriate- I think the activity was appropriate because the children were learning
different words that started with the letter “B” and taking turns swatting the pictures.
6. How long- 45 minutes. Appropriate for the age- This activity is appropriate for this age
group because preschool children are learning to recognize what sound each letter makes and
the words that start with that letter. It was a smaller class so they had enough time to try
7. Space- The space used for group time was the half circle floor space. It was appropriate
because all the children could see the pictures and are close enough to swat the correct
pictures.
8. Bring children together- Ms. Charlie included every child in the activity by letting them
take turns with the fly swatter. After one child would go they would pass on the fly swatter to the
next child.
9. Percentage of time actively- The children were 100% active for all of the group time,
even when it wasn’t the children’s turn they were still engaged with the activity by saying “swat”
or “don’t swat”.
10. Children react- The children’s reaction to group time was a happy and excited group of
children. They liked swatting the pictures and they like getting the correct answers.
11. Flexibility- The teachers showed flexibility by letting the children get a little loud and
expressive while doing the activity. They were loud when saying “swat” “don’t swat”.
12. I ndividualization- During the activity no child needed special attention or special
the boys in the class. When it was the boys turn to swat the pictures, they would swat the
picture harder than they should. Ms. Charlie had to warn them not swat the picture so hard
14. I nappropriate behaviors- The group of children consisted of 2 boys and 6 girls. The
inappropriate behavior was the boys swatting the pictures too hard during group time.
Behavior techniques- The behavior management techniques the teacher used was simple, if
you can’t swat the pictures with a light tap you will not have another turn in this activity. It was
effective because the boys wanted to participate so they didn’t swat the picture hard after they
were warned.
15. E
nded group time- Ms. Charlie ended group time with a dance. She passed out small bean
bags to dance “the bean bag dance”, the children were excited when she passed out the bean
16. A
ctivity followed- Art followed group time. This was appropriate because a complex art
project that would last the rest of the day and the children were excited to make an art project to
Evaluation- The time I spent in Ms. Charlie's classroom was very pleasant. Her class is well
behaved and played nicely together. It is important for young children to follow a routine
because it gives them a sense of stability while they are away from home. The children
followed a routine every day which made everything run smoothly. Ms. Charlie has a DAP
approach to the letter’s and sound activity because she gave the children instructions and
assumes that the children have the ability to follow them and handle materials. The children also
experienced appropriate interaction with one another because the children took turns turn’s
during the activity and followed directions well. The teacher set up an authentic activity for
learning different sounds of the alphabet and words that went with those sounds. It was
interesting to see the different processes of learning during the activity with small children; some
children swatted all the right pictures with confidence and others have to pause and think about
