DETAILED LESSON PLAN FOR GRADE VIII MATHEMATICS

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the session, the students are able to:

1. Describe the Rectangular Coordinate System and illustrate the coordinate axes,
the origin, and a point on the coordinate plane;
2. plot coordinate points on coordinate plane;
3. cite real life applications of the Rectangular Coordinate System.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Rectangular Coordinate System

Materials: visual aids, graphing paper, markers, chalk, chalkboard

III. TEACHING PROCEDURES

Teacher’s Activities Students Activities

A. Routinary Activities

Please Stand. (students will stand)

Please lead an opening prayer. (one student will lead an opening prayer)
Good morning class! Good morning Ma’am! It’s nice to see you!
It’s nice to see you too!
Please align your chairs properly and pick the (students will align their chairs and pick the
pieces of trash under your seats. trash under their seats)

Thank you. You may now take your seats. (students will take their seats)
Let’s check your attendance. Please start counting (students will begin to count with their

It’s nice that you are all here.

B. Review

Before we start a new lesson for today. Let us

have first a short recall of the undefined terms in
Geometry.
The undefined terms in Geometry are the
What are the undefined terms in Geometry? point, line, and plane.

Alright! What is a plane? A plane is a flat surface that extends in all

direction.
Correct. What are some representations of a (students will give some examples)
plane?
C. Motivation

Imagine this chalkboard as a plane, with a single (students answer may vary)
point on it, how will you describe the location of
this point?
Now take a look at this picture. Where is the (a student will locate Philippines on the
Philippines in this map? map)

How will you describe the location of our country The Philippines is located above the
in this map with respect to the equator and Prime equator and to the right of the Prime
Meridian? Meridian.

Do you think these imaginary lines (equator and (students answer may vary)
prime meridian) are important? Why?

D. Lesson Presentation

Today we will learn about the system of

describing the location of a point on a plane which
is known as the Rectangular Coordinate System or
the Cartesian Coordinate System.

Are you ready to listen? Yes Ma’am!

E. Lesson Proper/Discussion

What is a Rectangular Coordinate System or A Rectangular Coordinate System or

Cartesian Coordinate System? Cartesian Coordinate System is a system
that relates the correspondence between the
points on a plane to a pair of real numbers.
It is systematized by Rene’ Descartes, thus
the term Cartesian Plane.

This is a Rectangular Coordinate System. What The Rectangular Coordinate System makes
are its parts? (the teacher will post a picture of use of two coplanar perpendicular number
Rectangular Coordinate System and let the lines. The horizontal line is called x-axis
students identify and describe the parts) and the vertical line is called y-axis. These
axes intersect at origin and form four region
called quadrants.

How do we name the points on the coordinate The numerical descriptive reference of a
plane? point on a Rectangular Coordinate System
is called coordinates (x, y). The first
coordinate x corresponds to the real number
on the x-axis and is called x-coordinate or
abscissa. The second coordinate y
corresponds to the real number on the y-
axis and is called y-coordinate or ordinate.

Here is a Rectangular Coordinate System with (the students will perform the activity and
points on it, give the coordinate of the points. give the coordinate of the points)
Raise your hand if you want to answer. (The
teacher will post a coordinate plane with points on
it).
Very good everyone! Now, how do we plot a In plotting a point in a coordinate plane,
point on the Rectangular Coordinate System? locate the abscissa on the x-axis, draw an
imaginary vertical line then locate the
ordinate and draw a horizontal line. The
intersection of the extended lines of
abscissa and ordinate is where the point is
located.

Alright! Now we will have an activity. I will (the students will perform the activities and
divide you into five (5) groups. I will give each post their output afterwards)
group a graphing paper, a marker, and a set of
coordinates. Plot the coordinate on the graphing
paper and join the points to find the hidden image.
The first group to find the image will be the
winner.

Very good! Give yourselves a hand for a job well

done.

Now take a look at your output, what do you The abscissa and ordinate in Quadrant I are
notice about the coordinates in each quadrant? both positive, the abscissa is negative
while the ordinate is positive in Quadrant
II, the abscissa and ordinate are both
negative in Quadrant III, and the abscissa is
positive while the ordinate is negative in
Quadrant IV. The abscissa is zero (0) and
the ordinate is either positive or negative in
y-axis. The abscissa is either positive or
negative and the ordinate is zero (0) in x-
axis.

Very good observation class! Now I will flash Yes Ma’am!

some coordinates. You determine where the point
is located without graphing. Are you ready?
(the teacher will flash coordinates and let the
students determine its location)

F. Application

Now we will make use of our knowledge about Coordinart is an art showing figures formed
Rectangular Coordinate System. Do you know by joining points in a plane coordinate.
what Coordinart is?

Alright! Now bring out your graphing paper and (the students will perform the activities)
construct a simple Coordinart of your own.
Indicate the coordinates of the points you used. A
minimum of 10 points should be plotted in your
Coordinart.

G. Generalization

Let’s have a short recap of what we just

discussed.

What is a Rectangular Coordinate System or (students will answer based on their own
Cartesian Plane? understanding)
How do we plot the points on a Rectangular
Coordinate System or Cartesian Plane?

What are other applications of Rectangular (students will cite sample application)
Coordinate System you are familiar with?

Why do you think it is important to understand the (students answer may vary)
Rectangular Coordinate System or Cartesian
Plane?

IV. EVALUATION

Direction: Construct a Cartesian Coordinate Plane

and plot the following points.

A. (0, 10)
B. (– 2, −8)
C. (5, −6)
D. (7, 0)
E. (– 3, 10)

V. ASSIGNMENT

Have a research about Relation and some

examples in real life that demonstrates relation.
