Drawing the Graph of Quadratic Functions

The common form of quadratic function is 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 for 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐 ∈ 𝑅 and
𝑎 ≠ 0. Generally, drawing the graph of quadratic function can be done by following
these steps:
1). Point of Intersection of the Graph and the Coordinate Axis
a). Point of Intersection of the Graph and the Coordinate Axis
The point of Intersection of graph and X-axis is called X-intersection. The x-
intersection can be found if 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥) = 0. So that is obtained 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 =
0. Abscissa of X-intersection can be found from the roots of the quadratic
equations. The number of X-intersection depends on the value of the discriminant,
which is𝐷 = 𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑐.
(1) If D > 0, then the crosses X-axis on two different points.
(2) If 𝐷 = 0, then the graph touches X-axis on one point X.
(3) If 𝐷 < 0, then the graph does not cross or touch X-axis.
b). Point of Interception on Y-axis (Y-intercept)
The point of interception of graph and Y-axis is called Y-intecept. The Y-
intercept can be found if x = 0 so that is obtained 𝑦 = 𝑎(0)2 + 𝑏(0) + 𝑐 = 𝑐.
Thus, the point of interception of the graph of 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 and Y-axis
is (0,c) and its position automatically depends on c value.
(1) If c > 0, then the graph crosses positive Y-axis.
(2) If 𝑐 = 0, then the graph passes through the origin (0,0).
(3) If 𝑐 < 0, then the graph crosses negative Y-axis.

The Possibilities Of The Position Of The Graph Of Quadratic Functions f(x) =

ax 2 + bx + c

Based on Nilai c and D = b2 - 4ac.

(d) (e) (f)

D>0 D=0 D<0

Next image (c) is called positive definite and images (f) is called the definite negative.

2). Symmetry Axis

−𝑏
Symmetry axis of parabola 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 is 𝑥 = .
2𝑎

3). Maximum and Minimum Values of Function

−𝐷
Maximum and minimum values of f(x) are determined by the formula of 𝑦 = 4𝑎
.
4). Vertex

Vertex can be the highest or the lowest point on the quadratic graph. The vertex of
−𝑏 −𝐷
parabola for function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 is 𝑃( 2𝑎 , 4𝑎 ).

Example :

Draw the graph of quadratic function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 5

Answers :

From the given quadratic function, it can be found coefficient values of a = 1, b = -

6, and c = 5

1) Point of intersection on coordinate axis

(a) X-intersection X y = 0, so
𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 5 = 0
(𝑥 − 1) (𝑥 − 5) = 0
𝑥 = 1 𝑜𝑟 𝑥 = 5
So, the X-intercepts are (1, 0) and (5, 0).
(b) Y-intercept Y 𝑥 = 0, 𝑠𝑜
y = 𝑓(0) = 02 − 6(0) + 5 = 5
so, the Y-intersection is (0, 5)
−𝑏 −(−6)
2) The equation of symmetry axis is 𝑥 = = =3
2𝑎 2(1)

−𝑏 −(𝑏 2 −4𝑎𝑐)
3) Vertex (𝑥𝑝 , 𝑦𝑝 ) = ( 2𝑎 , )
4𝑎
−(−6) −((−6)2 −4 (1)(5))
=( , )
2(1) 4(1)

= (3, -4)
Hence, the graph of function 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 5 is as shown in the above figure.

Steps of learning

No Activity Teacher Time

1. Opening Activities 10 minutes

1. Greet teachers and one student led prayer.

2. Teachers check students ' attendance
3. as apersepsi, teachers do faqs about the kind of Function
and its Graph
4. Teachers motivate students to learn to draw the graph of a
quadratic function
5. teachers deliver learning objectives are expected to be
accomplished students, namely to draw the graph of a
quadratic function
6. The teacher informs how to learn that will is a discussion
group to complete the student worksheet
2 Main Activities 15 minutes

1. The teacher divided the students into several heterogeneous

groups with each group consisting of 4-5 students.
2. The teacher gives the student worksheet to each group.
3. Each group gets a task for drawing graphs of quadratic
functions
4. For students working in groups, the teacher noticed and
encourages all students to engage the discussion, redirect when
there are results of group discussions, as well as assess the
attitude.
5. Through the instruction of teachers, each group write down the
results of its discussions on the carton paper.
6. One of the discussion groups (not necessarily best) are
requested to present the results of its discussions to the next
class. While other groups, responding to what was presented.

7. The teacher giving the award to a group.

3 Closing Activities 5 minutes
1. Teachers guide students to make drawing conclusions about
the graphs of quadratic functions
2. Teacher asks if anyone has not yet understood by students.

3. The teacher gives two (2) reserved to do each student

individually and collected.

4. To provide reinforcement, learners are given tasks at home

some problem concerning the determination to draw the graph
of a quadratic function in the student book.

5. Teachers deliver the next learning plans regarding quadratic

functions and close the meeting.
