NATURAL COMBUSTIBLE GASES

FOR COMMERCIAL AND DOMESTIC USE

TECHNICAL CONDITIONS

GOST 5542-87

Official edition

STATE STANDARDS COMMITTEE

Moscow
effective from January 1, 1988
through January 1, 1993
Non observation of the standard is prosecuted by law

Present standard covers natural combustible gases used as feedstock and fuel for commercial and domestic
purposes.

1. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

1.1 By their physical and chemical properties natural gases should meet requirements and
norms given below.

DESCRIPTION NORM TEST METHOD

Remarks:
1. As agreed with consumer, it is allowed to supply gas for power generation purposes with
higher concentration of hydrogen sulphide and mercaptane sulphur by separate gas
pipelines.
2. Standards mentioned in closes 2, 3, 8 are only applicable to domestic use gas. For
commercial gas close 8 standard should be agreed with the consumer.
3. Nominal value of Wobbe number is set in the range of norm according to standard given
in close 2 of the table above for certain gas distributing systems with consumers
agreement.

1.2 Moisture dew point at the receiving station should be lowe than gas temperature.
1.3 Presence of liquid phase and carbon hydrates in gas is not admitted and is optional until
01.01.89

1.3 Safety requirements

1.3.1 Natural combustible gases by their toxic characteristics are referred to the 4th class of
hazardous substances according to GOST 12.1.007-76.
1.3.2 Natural combustible gases are referred to the group of substances which, when mixed
with air, can create explosive substances.
Concentration limit of explosive range (by methane) in mixture with air, volume percent concentration:
lower limit – 5, upper limit – 15, for natural gas of certain content concentration limit of explosive
range should be defined in accordance with GOST 12.1.044-84.
Explosive mixture category 11A-T1.
1.3.3. MAC of carbon hydrates in the air of working area should be 300 mg/m3 on conversion
to carbon (GOST 12.1.005-76).
MAC of carbon sulphide in the air of working area is 10 mg/m3, whereas carbon sulphide in
hydrocarbon compounds is C1-C5-3 mg/m3.
1.3.3 Safety measures and means of personnel protection from natural gas impact, personal
hygiene requirements, as well as requirements to the state of equipment and premises
are regulated by safety rules of oil and gas industry and safety rules of gas facilities
approved by Gosgortechnadzor of USSR.

2. Acceptance

2.1 Selection of samples in accordance with GOST 18917-82.

2.2 Locations of samples selection, intervals and points of quality control of gas and its
compliance with the requirements of the present standard should be agreed with the
consumer. The intervals of control by the data in table 1, 5-8 and by dew point of gas
moist should not be less than once per month. With consumer’s agreement it is allowed
not to define hydrogen sulphide mass concentration in gas deposit which do not contain
this impurity.
2.3 Gas quality test results are applicable to gas flow in the pipeline between present and
following test.
2.4 If test results are negative at least by one parameter of gas quality, another test on this
particular parameter is to be carried out using newly selected sample. Second test results
are considered to be final and applicable to gas flow between present and following test.

3. Test methods

3.1 Defining dew point of gas moisture according to GOST 20060-83. Other methods and devices are allowed
providing accuracy is the same.

4. Transportation

4.1 Gas transportation is carried out by gas pipelines via gas-distribution stations. Natural
combustible gas can be supplied to consumers straight from the field, gas processing
plants, trunk pipelines and underground gas storage stations via gas-distribution stations.
