Introduction

You may be wondering why of all topics that may occur, we come up with

this. We chose this topic because for us, it is a mystery that needs to unravel.

There's an infinite questions behind this topic but let's just stick with this one :

why do some students seldom buy foods and school supplies in our canteen?

There must have reasons why that's why we conducted a research about it.

Schools are in a good position to endorse healthy food related behaviors

in students and help ensure appropriate food intake. (O’Toole, Anderson, Miller &

Guthrie, 2007). In fact, the school canteen is a great place to promote an

enjoyment of healthy eating. And it is a cozy spot that relaxes the students and

teachers for it has a calming ambiance. For students who use the canteen

regularly, the food purchased makes a significant contribution to their total food

intake and nutrition; therefore it makes sense to ensure the best food possible is

available to enhance their ability to learn and take in the information presented to

them in class.

For students who don’t use the canteen regularly, the canteen still plays

an important educational and modelling role for healthy eating habits.

There are many aspects of a child’s life that may be restricted in an

educational setting. It is appropriate to restrict unhealthy food in an educational

setting. That's why DepEd made a policy that restricts unwholesome foods and

snacks which is the DO 13, S. 2017. Canteen also plays an important role within
the broader school environment – that of reinforcing knowledge, skills and

behaviors about healthy eating and lifestyle which are taught in the classroom.

Food provided at school has a considerable influence on the development of

children’s long-term eating habits, food preferences and attitudes towards food.

The school canteen plays a vital role in promoting healthy foods and

creating a school culture of healthy eating. In case of ours, it is providing the

students snacks that help ease their hunger and gain energy that they need

during school hours. It also has an accommodating offers that are truly

convenient for the students in school.

Statement of the Problem

This exploration aimed to find out the main reason why some of the

GEANHS students seldom buy foods and school supplies in the school canteen.

Sometimes the income of the canteen is not enough for the bills that they should

pay and this can cause several issues and damages to the school. So with this,

researchers will look for the better ways or procedures to annihilate this such

kind of problem.
Significance of the Study

This research hopes to identify some ways to help the canteen gain more

customers as well as income. This study has significance not just for the

researchers, but also to the following:

•Canteen (workers of the canteen)

It will help them to generate some ideas to resolve this problem. In this

way, they can observe what method is eventually effective, make a wise decision

what they will choose, then pursue it and see the progress. It will help them to

communicate better to the students to know what kind of foods and school

supplies they may offer. They can also receive extra income if these ways are

utilize.

•Students

It can help them to admire more the school because of the quality of the

canteen and the stuffs they offer. They can oftenly buy now foods/school

supplies in our school canteen without any conflicts because they are satisfied

and no need to look for more.

•School

The extra income that the school canteen received can be a fund for

other projects or programs that is needed to perform.

•Future Researchers

The ideas presented may be used as a reference data in conducting

new researches or in testing the validity of other related analysis. This study will

also serve as a cross-reference that will give them a background or an overview

about the reasons why some students are not buying foods and school supplies

in the school canteen.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

(Kwan, Petersen, Pine, and Borutta, 2005). Schools can play an important

role in promoting healthy habits. According to them, “Poor oral health can have a

detrimental effect on children’s quality of life, their performance at school and

their success in later life”. Much work needs to be done to address the issues

that students faced. More work is needed on the gender differences, on the

choice of food items of girl and boys students, the food value of these items, its

impact on students’ health, and the social influences on them. There is a need for

teachers, educationists, and other stake holders to advocate for the use of

healthier foods in and around schools. Hochbaum (1981) argued that social,

economic and environmental factors are important influences on food selection.

The change will not occur if social, economic and environmental conditions are

not conducive to change. Hochbaum stated:

“.... the great majority of people are guided in their food selections by

considerations totally unrelated to health; by their own and their family's

taste preferences, by cost, by convenience, by the lures of advertising

and store displays, and so forth (1981, p. S51).”

A recent study of Fréderike Mensink, Saskia Antoinette

Schwinghammer, and Astrid Smeets indicates, most students do not consider

their eating patterns important and making healthy food choices is not a top-of-

mind issue for them. More specifically, they admit to be tempted when they see

or smell palatable and unhealthy food. Glanz and Mullis (2007) found that usually

only the "safety" of food is considered, and not necessarily the "healthfulness".

They suggested that environmental strategies should include opportunities for

healthy choice and should influence demand, for example, promotion of the

foods and supplies a canteen offers, incentives and point-of-choice information.

Echiverri (2010) studied the management of school canteen and based on

the findings, the majority of the canteen were managed by the private individuals

and found out that all canteen facilities and equipment are moderately adequate

and supervised by the canteen personnel. Quizon (2009) studied that the

students are not buying foods and school supplies in canteen because of the

they are seldom satisfied of the management of the canteen activities. Mahreen

(2005) found out that student are not buying regularly in canteen because most

of the student got comparatively less pocket money. But girls, on the other hand,

buy food items more often than boy students. The pocket money not spent on

buying food items was spent mostly on transport fare and for their savings.
According to the Department of Education, they

are strongly committed to support student’s health and well-

being through its curriculum in schools and range initiatives

that offer opportunities for physically fit individuals who love eating healthy food.

Schools are encouraged to implement comprehensive health and well-

being programs, including food and nutrition education. They help eliminate mal-

nutrition by the virtue of DepEd Order No 14. S, 2005, the Instruction to Ensure

Consumption of Nutritious and SafeFoods in Schools that all schools must have

school canteens is indicated. Schools are best places to implement solutions to

over-nutrition and obesity since children and youths spend most of their time in

school canteen and consequently, spend more time in eating in school than their

home. The foods and drinks were categorized into healthy and unhealthy foods

and drinks according to the 2012 Dietary Guidelines for Filipinos. Cheddeng (2012)

stated, people of all ages can learn about school nutritious food choices by

observing the food each day.

Results and Discussion

This section presents the Presentation of Data, Findings, Interpretation,

Conclusion and Recommendation.

“Why do some students rarely buy foods and school supplies in our school
canteen?”
Table 1.

FOODS SCHOOL SUPPLIES

1.Expensive 55% 50%

2. Limited 22% 17%

Food/Supplies

3. Canteen's too far 15% 20%

4. Low Quality 8% 13%

TOTAL 100% 100%

The table shows that 55% of 100 students said that they seldom buy foods

because it is expensive and 50% of that 100 students also said that the school

supplies in our canteen is expensive. Some students think that the foods and

school supplies that the canteen offers is limited only. While most of the students

in the building responded that the canteen is truly far from their respective rooms.

They also reasoned that some foods and school supplies are in low quality. All of

these should give an attention by the school and canteen.

However, the survey and the interview showed different opinion regarding

the topic. The top answer in the survey says that the food and school supplies in

the canteen are quite expensive. While, the canteen personnel insisted that the

reason behind this is the limited food and school supplies that the canteen

possesses.
On the other hand, the result of the research agrees with Mahreen (2015)

that the major reason why some of the students seldom buy foods and school

supplies in the school canteen is because the items are quite expensive and they

can’t afford to buy often because of the shortage money that they need to

budget.

Conclusion

There are many reasons that a student has, why he/she is rarely buying

foods and other stuffs in our school canteen. And based on the result of our

study, the main reason why they rarely buy foods and school supplies in our

canteen is because it is expensive. We conclude that they are buying foods and

school supplies in our school canteen or either they bring snacks for themselves.

Recommendation

 The canteen should offer different meals with nice tastes each day.

 Expand the place and add more tables and chairs to accommodate more

students.

 Have another consistent canteen near the building for the sake of the

students who study there.

 Lessen the price of the food and other stuffs into affordable one.
Methodology

 Research Design and Instrument

This study utilized the Descriptive Type of Educational Research

specifically, the survey method. We used the questionnaire as an instrument in

gathering data and information to answer the specific topic which is, the reasons

why some students aren't buying foods and school supplies in our school

canteen.

 Participants

The respondents of this study were randomly selected students of

GEANHS-Bailen, from Grade 7 up to Grade 10.

This research was conducted inside the Gen. E. Aguinaldo National High

School-Bailen under the supervision of Mr. Mark Rey De Castro.

Appendix. C Interview Transcription

1. What are the reasons why not all of the students are buying foods and

school supplies in our school canteen?

Tyaka gustuhin man naming

nandito. Hahaha.

Interviewee #3: Ahh, a little bit expensive than school supplies outside, one of the

reason why don’t buy in our canteen, ahh, more expensive that school supplies

outside. It is also because we have three helpers we're going to pay. School

supplies outside is much lower than here. Maybe one to two peso difference.

Example, a short folder is five (peses) in outside but inside here is 6 (pesos). We

have no school supplies that you can need because some teachers not inform me

that use that kind of school supply. Ahead of time dapat yung teachers ini-inform

ako na kailangan dapat may school supplies. So para makapag prepare at makabili

agad sa labas.
2. What are the possible ways to encourage all students to patronize the

products of canteen?

Interviewee #.1: Siguro kailangan wag magpalbas ang guard. Tyaka wag gawing

extend yung canteen.

Interviewee #3: Ahm, more canteen improvement, soguro more spaces or dining

spaces maybe yun,isa yun para ma-encourage and then on product here are

limited only, that’s why some of students not buying here, we have no may sweetw

product, water only, that’s why some of the students are not buying here.

3. Do you think that the customers are satisfied with the canteen's services?

Interviewee #.1: Siguro……

Interviewee #.2: Yes, because thee canteen foods is very nice and beautiful and

very delicious. The foods here is approve by DepEd.

dahil minsan napapaaway ako dito. I don’t know if they are really satisfied.

Inteviewee #.1: Mayroon namang extension doon sa building nyo. Tapos paunti

the aim is the improvement of our canteen and from the fund incomes, not enough

to renovate or improve our canteen because, expenses are some of school

supplies expenses on our canteen income. Some buying from appliances. Dome

equipment, that is from our canteen income.

5. What is the most purchasable item/food do the school canteen posses?

Interviewee #.1: Sa pagkain lugaw. Sa school supplies naman, ballpen.

Interviewee #.2: Turon, fried rice, tinapay at colored paper, manila paper, cartolina
