Peer to Peer Learning

Peer to peer learning is a type of collaboration between two or more people on

the same ‘level’ in a organization (this usually means students in a school). The
aim of this collaboration is to get help on a certain type of problem. For example,
if I was stuck on a math question on Khan Academy, I could ask my friend (aka
peer) for help instead of going to a teacher.

What are the benefits/advantages of peer to peer learning?

1. The words of students are more easier to understand. This could be the
way they think about a certain topic/question or how convey information
to you.
2. Although we are constantly being told not to shy away from asking
questions, there is a boundary between teacher and student. Learning
becomes more relaxed and fun when you learn from a friend.
3. You don’t become spoonfed. You become less eager to think and explore
new ideas when someone is dangling a straightforward answer in front
of you.
4. You have to go out of your comfort zone. ESPECIALLY if aren’t a people
person.
5. Build confidence to ask questions in a relaxed setting.
6. Peer to peer learning isn’t just about learning to answer questions. You
can learn how to outsource materials and services, make email accounts,
and develop new ideas thru . Eg: you don’t know how to make post links
on your Gameboard. If your teacher shows you and you forget a step later
on, you probably wont be inclined to ask again (remember no. 2-
boundaries?). But, you asked your friend, you don’t have to walk around
looking for them and muster up the courage to ask them something they
said 10 mins ago (which is what you would have to do with a teacher). All
you have to do is ask them to reapeat it again.
7. It saves you a lot of time.
8. You learn to be resourceful. If your peer doesn’t give you a good answer,
you have to ask another friend or use other resources.
9. PTPL is a two way learning experience! You learn how to teach someone
and to convey your ideas using different mediums like drawings, etc.
Teaching someone else also helps you retain information better.

You also learn to collaborate with other people thru PTPL. You will become a
more open-minded person and remains calm if teammates are not
coorperating.

Sidenote: If one does not understand something, they shuld use resources
such as Google, Wikipedia, and Quora before asking a peer for help. This is
because if you do so you will, in a way, become spoonfed as well as disrupt
other peoples working time. Afterall, Acton’s philosophy is to learn to do and
learn to be.

2. How can peers compensate for the years of experience of some teachers/
experts which puts them be in a better position to give explainations?

3. What if your peer group is not intrested in the subject that you want to
learn?
