An interview at JustWatch - what to expect

==========================================

Thanks for your time and making it to this point - this means we really liked the
communication with you so far and you are already part of the top 5% of applicants.

To give you the optimum chance of performing well at your interview, we want you to
know what to expect.

### What an interview looks like

- You will always interview with the head of the team you will be working with and
usually one other person related to the job.
- We'll introduce ourselves and will expect to hear a little on who you are, where
you're coming from and where you want to go.
- We will ask some questions about our company - how far you understand what we are
doing and how.
- We will ask a few questions on your personality in order to look for some of the
traits you will see below.
- We do a short programming exercise on premise - no IDE involved, no libraries
needed, not more than 10 lines.
- You are expected to solve this excercise within the interview, but there will be
no time pressure and we are prepared to remove bias (unfamiliar keyboard, etc.)
- We will ask a deep and open technical question.
- We will talk about your availability, needs and constraints.

### Traits we are looking for in an interview

- Intelligence
- Humility and Honesty
- Entrepreneurial thinking
- Signs of fit to our core values
- Passion, including an unhappiness about the status quo
- A demonstrated focus towards results and action rather than abstract thinking and
ideas
- Curiosity and Creativity
- Good communication
- Empathy

### What we don't do

- Whiteboard coding - this technique exerts a lot of non-real-world pressure and

prefers natural extroverts. We might do some scribbling or design together at the
Whiteboard though and you're free to use it at any point to demonstrate your ideas
- Brain teasers - they've been proven not to work and are useless as performance
indicators
- Weird questions - "Would you rather fight 1 horse-sized duck, or 100 duck-sized
horses?"

### What will happen after

- We will follow-up with a mail that includes actionable information on your

performance - our policy is to give you as much honest information as possible by
law in order to improve your chances at further interviews and to offer concrete
areas of personal development
- Next interviews are rare, but possible - especially for Lead positions. We'll
only invite you to a followup if we think it's worth it.
- A coding exercise: For more Junior applicants, we do this as a part of the
screening process in order to save working professionals valuable time (especially
if public open source contributions are available). If we ask you to doing this
challenge at this point, we are already very committed to you as a person and want
to remove all remaining ambiguity about professional performance.
- If you made it: Involve our Talent department and try to get you on board as fast
and great as possible.
