Character Padlet Project Directions:

I would like to introduce you to the Character Padlet Project. This is like your character analysis essays,
except now, they will turn into a digital blog-like poster for characters in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
This final project is your chance to showcase all the skills and knowledge you have learned from this
entire unit. You will be working with partners on this project and will be randomly assigned a character to
create your Padlet around. Your options include Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, the nurse, Tybalt, Friar
Laurence, Benvolio, Paris, Capulet, and Lady Capulet. After everyone has their characters, you will then
work with your partner to create a digital poster on Padlet filled with posts, quotes, drawings, and photos
(all of which should be inspired with the character in mind).

Carefully read through the directions below to assure that you make an effective digital character
poster:
1. Go to the Padlet website and create a free account (both partners must do this). Make sure to click
the option that says, “I am a student.”
2. Once on your account, one person in the pair will click the button in the middle of the page that
says, “make new Padlet.”
3. You will modify your Padlet with your partner by choosing an appropriate title that gives
significance to your character (it must have their name in it too). Then, provide your name and
your partner’s name in the description line underneath the title (By: NAME and NAME). You
will then choose a wallpaper, theme, and font to decorate your Padlet. Remember, all your
choices should reflect your character’s preference/essence. Is there a color or style that reflects
their mood or personality?
4. The next page you see will be “People and Privacy” settings. The one thing you MUST do, is
enter your partner’s email or username into the “Add contributors” section and select the option
for “can modify” under “Those with access.” This will give the partner who did not create a
Padlet on their account the ability to work and add posts simultaneously with you on the same
project. Once that is done, click “start posting.” Use the (+) in the bottom right corner of the page
to create new posts.
5. Though you have creative freedom, there is however, certain criteria that your digital poster
MUST have/answer:
a. Provide a MINIMUM of 15 posts (Distribution of Work: place your name under each
post you create, so I know who did what between you and your partner).
b. Provide at least one picture of the character with an attached description of their physical
appearance, what other characters think of him, and their role in the play.

c. Provide at least 2 posts that showcase internal characterization (motivations, conflicts,

etc.) and you will use quotes from the text to support your claims.
d. Provide at least 2 (one per person) posts that show a memorable moment in the play that
involved the character (whether they developed or moved the plot along). Reflect on their
actions/thoughts/words and provide what character traits they exude from the scene. Use
quotes to support your choices and claims.
e. Create a metaphor that represents your character’s traits. Provide a photo representation
of the metaphor and a thorough explanation in this post.
f. Making Connections: Create a post in which you select “Text-to-Text or Text-to-
World.” Provide a quote and/or photo that relates to your connection. Under that, write a
thorough reflection about why you feel this character relates to your connection. (Is the
character a foil to another? Similar? How so? Could you connect them to someone in
this present-day world? In what way are they reminiscent?)
g. The rest of the posts are in your hands as partners. Get creative with them. Maybe make a
playlist of 3-5 songs you think they would be listening to in this present time and explain
why (using quotes or critical thinking). Use the drawing feature to create a picture they
might have doodled that expresses their state of being in a scene. Do you have any unique
theories that contributes to the characterization of your subject? Tell us!
6. Here are some other questions to think about when creating your posts. Remember, you must
think critically and provide textual evidence to make your claims stronger.
a. What is my character’s biggest goal in life? What do they do to obtain it?
b. Does my character follow a specific Carl Jung archetype? How so?
c. What emotions does the audience feel towards my character? (FUN IDEA: Maybe create a
post written by them in the ways they would react to something in this century?)
7. Remember to add a good number of quotes from the text (with appropriate citations!) to support
your claims/analysis within your post. This will be a crucial part of your project’s grade. The
main idea is to show me you understand how to connect a character’s deeper self to the overall
story. Show your creativity by providing vibrant/related pictures with uniquely-themed posts.
8. After you and you partner finish creating your Character Padlet Project, you will click the
“Share” button in the top right corner. Then click the option titled “Share/Export/Embed” at the
top of the sidebar. Choose the option of email and email me the link to your Padlet. This will be
the way you digitally submit your project for grading. Only one person in your partnership may
submit the project via email (MAKE SURE BOTH OF YOUR NAMES ARE ON THE
PROJECT). Please do not forget to email me your project by the given deadline to assure you get
credit for your work.

In Fair Verona Gallery Showcase:

This is an opportunity to showcase your final project to your classmates! The day after you turn
in your project, bring in your laptops into class and pull up your Character Padlet Project.
Display them on your desk so that students “visit your piece” and begin to examine/study your
projects. I will pass out compliment/feedback cards to each of you. Every time you visit a new
Padlet project around the room, I want you to leave a compliment or helpful feedback to the
creator. Tell them what you found interesting or something you would like to add about their
character when you read the play. Leave the card on their desk next to their laptop and move on
to the next available project station. As you go around studying the many digital posters, I will
play music that will take us into the Elizabethan era. This is a fun activity that will provide
helpful feedback to/from peers as we wrap-up our character analysis unit. Communication is key
in this activity. Though this is not part of the final project grade, I will still give you participation
points for coming prepared with your projects as well as your ability to give effective feedback
to your peers.
