Chapter 1
Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

Broken home occurs as a result of separation of marriage either

by divorce or death. Broken home, contributed a lot to anti-social behavior

society. In an ideal atmosphere, children should happily be with their

parents, children appreciated the love of their parent towards them. One

of the task that should be fulfilled by the parents, is to educate their children

because live schooling of students started from home.

According to Hemm (1970), children who came from broken

families will most likely have difficult in life, some children from broken

families are more likely to turn to drug abuse or other negative behaviors.

Children of divorced parents are roughly two times more likely to drop out

from school than their peers who benefit from living with parents who are

not divorced. Parental relationship plays a very important role in

determining the academic performance of their children in school. These

conflicts affect the academic performance of their children hence lead to

drop out from school.

The researcher’s purpose is to explore the perception of

children in broke marriages and the effects of the status on their academic
performance. Also, to examine primary school teacher’s perception of the

effects broken marriages on children’s academic performance.

Statement of the Problem

This study seeks to explore what limit do broken homes causes by

separation of divorce or death of parents affect the children or student’s

academic performance. This also aims to determine how important and

wide are the knowledge of the people about the topic. Specifically, it

sought to answer the following problems:

1. What would be the outcome of the student’s academic

performance experiencing a broken family?

2. What is the mean and the standard deviation of the data?

3. What is the Q2, D40, and P70 of the data?

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study covers Saint Joseph Institute of Technology area, as a case

study on the effect of broken homes on student’s academic performance.

The study is limited to 10 selected grade 7 students and grade 8

students in Saint Joseph Institute of Technology.

Chapter 2
Methodology

Research Design

The researchers chose a quantitative survey to conduct this study.

The researches chose the quantitative survey because it can be done

easier and it can be answered by the respondents very quick and easy. We

had a topic about the effect of a broken family to the student’s

performance, we will be collecting an information through the respondents

with the help of quantitative design.

Research Instrument

The researchers made a simple survey questionnaire about the

topic we made which is the effect of a broken family to the student’s

academic performance. We will have a survey with our research

questionnaire that can be done easier by the respondents.

Research Respondents

The researchers selected the Junior High School of Saint Joseph

Institute of Technology to be the respondents of the study, preferably the

grade 7 and grade 8 students. The researchers came up with 20

respondents as having 10 representatives from grade 7 students and

another 10 representatives from grade 8 students.

Research Locale

This study was conducted at Saint Joseph Institute of Technology

- Annex Campus located at T-calo Street, Butuan City. The school is headed

by Dr. Liz Irish Ng Villamor, the Principal. The school consist of Preschool,

Elementary, Junior High School and Senior High School levels. Attached is

the map where Saint Joseph Institute of Technology Annex Campus is

located.

Presentation and Interpretation

This chapter presents the data gathered, the results of the statistical

analysis done and interpretation of finding. These are presented in tables

following the sequence of the specific research problem regarding the

Effects of a Broken Family to the Students Performance.

Problem 1. What would be the possible outcome of the student’s academic

performance experiencing a broken family?

Table 1. Frequency table of the Respondents.

c. Lack of discipline 4 20%

d. Inactive 3 15%

Based from the result of our survey regarding the possible outcome

of the student’s academic performance experiencing a broken family,

there are 55% of respondents who chose the lack of focus at school, 10%
respondents who chose lead to drop out from school, 20% of respondents

who chose lack of discipline and 15% of the respondents who chose

inactive from the survey questionnaire.

the respondents coming from 10 grade 7 students and another 10 grade 8

students of Saint Joseph Institute of Technology. The blue graph represents

Problem 2. What is the mean and standard deviation of the data?

We came up with this result through the help of standard deviation

that measure to quantify the amount of variation or dispersion of a set of

data values. These results represents the most chosen effect of a broken

family to the student’s academic performance by the respondents based

from the survey that researcher’s had.

These results’ objective is to determine the most chosen effect of a

broken family to the student’s academic perfomance by the respondents

based from the survey we had. The resultof the data we had, was solved

by the used of Deciles, Quartiles and Percentiles equation.

Chapter 4
Summary and Conclusion

This chapter will provide a summary of the purpose, methodology

and results of this study. Then, conclusions will be discussed based on the

results of the survey that was conducted by the researchers.

Summary

This mini-statistical research work studied the effects of broken

family on student’s academic performance in Saint Joseph Institute of

Technology. The study was organized into four chapters. Chapter one

presented the overview of the study with source, statement of the problem,

research question, scope and delimitation of the study. Chapter two also

presented the research design, which is the quantitative. The research

instrument, where survey questionnaire belong and lastly, the research

locale where the study was conducted.

Chapter three, comprises of presentation and interpretation.

Where the data gathered is presented by the table and each table has its

own interpretation based from the result of the survey. Chapter four

covered summary and conclusion of the study.

Conclusion

The study conclude that, most of the respondents are not staying

with their both parents. Most of the respondents can relate of this study

because of their family status and they perform below expectation due to

the lack of care, attention and security from their parents.

The study further concluded that some of the factors which

causes mental health and psychological effects on the student’s

academic performance as a result of broken family, are lack of love,

attention and discipline.

students of Saint Joseph Institute of Technology. These photos was taken

during conducting of survey.

Appendix B
Survey Questionnaire

The researchers made a simple survey questionnaire about the topic

we made which is the effects of a broken family to the student’s academic

performance that can be answered very quickly by the respondents.

The objective of this survey is to collect tangible information about

the effects of a broken a family to the student’s academic performance.

Please let us know your spontaneous response to the question.

What would be the possible outcome of the student’s academic

performance experiencing a broken family?

a. Lack of focus at school

b. Lead to drop out from school

c. Lack of discipline

d. Inactive
