In the following pages I’ll explain in a concise manner the specifics of the work that I’ve done in my

4 years of working experience. I know that it is a lot of text, but I also know that it’s very important
for you to know if I’m capable or not of doing the job that comes ahead. The first 2 years of work I
was mainly focused on the modeling of surface water bodies such as rivers, estuaries and
reservoirs. Then, I joined Schlumberger Water Services and started working mainly with
groundwater models. Besides the obvious differences that exist between surface- and
groundwater systems, I firmly believe that the things that I learned during my first 2 years of work
had been very useful for what I’m doing nowadays.

Specifics of the work done before joining Schlumberger Water Services:

Project engineer at the Universidad de Chile (1 year 9 months):

Developing a methodology for the Chilean environmental authority which was intended to define
a workflow for quantifying the mixing capacity of fluvial estuaries. The original idea was not to
incorporate numerical modeling, but at the end we couldn’t define a workflow based just on
analytical equations, reason why we ended up developing a methodology that considered the
numerical modeling of the surface flow and the transport processes with HEC-RAS (1-D Saint
Venant equations + conservative advection-dispersion transport) and with a MATLAB code written
by me that solved the two-layer 1-D Saint Venant equations (transient surface flow in two layers of
different densities). This project was also my thesis, so I was in charge of doing most of the work,
with the guidance of two professors. Working directly with the client.

Numerical modeling of the surface flow and the sediment transport processes in rivers and
reservoirs in order to determine the lifespan of certain hydroelectric power plants reservoirs (5
power plants from the same client that could generate approx. 3000 MW of power). The modeling
was done with a FORTRAN code that was implemented at the University. I was responsible of
modifying the code that had certain issues with the conservation of the total mass of sediments,
and of building, calibrating, running scenarios and processing the results of the different models.
No direct contact with the client.

Project engineer at Centro de Ecología Aplicada (6 months):

Numerical modeling of the surface flow in rivers with HEC-RAS in order to establish how much
water the clients could take out of the river without violating certain environmental criteria (min.
water depth and min. shear stress). I was responsible of building, calibrating, running scenarios,
processing the results and writing the relevant chapters of the final reports. No direct contact with
the client.

Numerical modeling of the surface variable density flow and chemical/biological processes in
reservoirs from certain hydroelectric power plants with CE-QUAL-W2 in order to verify potential
eutrophication problems. CE-QUAL-W2 was run within Linux and most of the models were built
with MATLAB routines. I was responsible of writing the MATLAB routines and of building,
calibrating, running scenarios, processing the results and writing the relevant chapters of the final
reports. No direct contact with the client.

Specifics of the main projects done by me at Schlumberger Water Services (2 years 7 months):

Numerical modeling of the pore water pressure in open pit mines with SEEP/W (2D finite element
transient model). I was responsible of building the 2D slices (regions, materials, boundary
conditions, etc.), calibrating, running the scenarios and processing the results. The whole workflow
associated to these models was well defined and really straightforward reason why it was not
really challenging. This is usually the first type of work that’s assigned at the office to the
engineers/hydrogeologists that do not have experience with groundwater flow models. No direct
contact with the client.

Hydrological modeling of a region located in the Chilean Altiplano, in order to evaluate the
flooding risk for a geothermal energy company. I was in charge of doing the hydrological
calculations and writing the report with the guidance of a senior engineer, since I hadn’t have
much experience regarding this subject.

Numerical modeling of the flow and the conservative transport processes (w/ Visual Modflow) of
the infiltrated water from a tailings dam, in order to do the preliminary hydraulic design of two
possible solutions for restraining the movement of the infiltrated process water to a region of the
aquifer in the vicinity of the dam (hydraulic barrier and physical barrier). The numerical model
came from another consulting company, and I was in charge of solving certain numerical and
conceptual issues, of doing the preliminary design of the two alternatives, writing the whole
report and of doing some presentations for the client. Direct contact with the client.

Numerical modeling of the same tailings dam, but for another segment of the mining company.
Basically, I was in charge of helping this segment of the mining company with the environmental
assessment process of the alternative that they were promoting (hydraulic barrier). The work that
I did included coupling the numerical model with a regional groundwater flow model that was run
by another consulting group. Major modifications to the model were done, regarding the
recharge, the definition of certain hydrogeological units, some numerical issues, etc. I was also in
charge of helping them write the answers to the questions made by the Chilean environmental
authority, and also of defending the hydraulic barrier alternative and the whole project in front of
a coupled of international experts that were brought by the mining company in order to know
them opinion about which alternative they believed to be the best. Working directly with the
client, doing weeks of work at their offices.

Numerical modeling of the groundwater flow to an open pit from an adjacent endorheic basin
with Groundwater Vistas. I was in charge of guiding a junior engineer that had to extend the
existing groundwater flow model of the endorheic basin to include part of the open pit, with the
main purpose of answering some questions that the mining company had. Because I had to return
to another project, much of the guidance was done by another person.

Internal developing project of a type of modeling called “hydro-geomechanical coupled modeling”.

Since this is an internal developing project I can’t write many details, but I can basically say that I
was in charge of doing most of the work without much help, since this is a relatively new type of
modeling, and there are not many experts outside or inside of SWS. This was a really challenging
project, because the commercial software that claim to solve this problem have a lot of issues. In
general terms, in an open pit mine you can have a lot of depressurization when the hydraulic
conductivity is relatively high, which is something that can be surely solved by the classic
groundwater flow models. The thing is that if you have considerably low conductivities, an open
pit can suffer a lot of depressurization, but not because drainage, but because of the
geomechanical effects associated to the unloading process (excavation). The internal developing
project was done in part to model the open pit of an existing client. I also had to work directly with
people from other SWS offices, and even with people from Schlumberger Oilfield. At the same
time, we were helped a lot by a developer of one of the commercial software that we were
benchmarking.

Helping other projects in the office. I usually help other engineers/hydrogeologist in the office
when their projects are considerably behind schedule, by programing routines in order to make
modifications to the models by changing text files, which is something that is relatively easy to do
with Visual Modflow, or by solving numerical issues.
