Foundations of TESOL
October 20, 2018 was the first time I delivered a lesson. The class was an ESL beginner
course and the age group was 6-8 years old. The topic was “Describing people” and students
would use adjectives to describe animals, people, family and friends. Overall I believe the
demonstration went well, however there areas that need improvement. Using the reflective
teaching approach, I will discuss areas that need improvement and those areas of strength.
To reflect on the surface, in regards to the warm up, I think I did well in choosing a
question that 6-8 years olds would relate to: “What is your favorite animal”? I did not have the
PowerPoint available for my lesson to display, however I did have pictures of animals to show to
the students. There were three pictures to one 8x11 inch sheet of paper and making the pictures
larger would have been easier for the students to see. To include bodily-kinetics into the warm up,
students could have acted out their favorite animal. This would have gotten the students out of their
chairs and created excitement in preparation of the lesson. Another idea would be to talk about a
local animal park or zoo. I believe I gave enough time for the “connect-the- dot” activity. I walked
around the room to check students work and give approximately 3-4 minutes to complete the
activity. There were two students who were not finished at the 4 minute mark, however, it was
encouraged the students to respond to question and fill in the blanks by remaining quiet until they
responded. This is a good tactic because it allows the students to think about what to say instead of
the teacher feeding them the information. It was understood that the students knew the names of
colors and were able recognizable. I used the prior knowledge of colors to help illustrate that the
stick figure on the board was tall. To add an activity, students could be placed to get into pairs and

talk about a friend, mom, dad, brother or sister and talk about what they like about them. This
To reflect critically, I tried to pick students to speak who I had a hard time hearing. There
were students who spoke more often and louder than other students. It is important to give students
who may be shy a chance to participate in the class. I made sure to pan the room to see if all the
students were responding to my prompting to speak. The lesson of “Describing People” would be
useful for the students in everyday life. The students would be able to describe people, places, and
