Issue faced at work

Through a recent interview with our tutor, Miss Christina, there are also issues or problems
that Miss Christina will face with her colleagues during her working hours as well. In the
interview, Miss Christina stated a few steps that will be taken to weather the storm and better
eliminate different opinions that are present. To handle the situation, Miss Christina had given
opinions and specific steps, with trying to rationalise thoughts as the first straw. After the
process of rationalising, she will then try to justify her stands and talk it out with her
colleagues. Miss Christina also stated that if her own point is correct, she will stand firm and
try to talk sense into her colleagues to agree with her opinion. If in any case that Miss
Christinas’ points are on the losing end, or it is simply not solid enough for her to argue or
discuss about it further, she will agree on her colleagues’ opinion and give in. This action is
will help in resolving issues and misunderstandings so that no harsh feelings will become
available between Miss Christina and her colleagues.

Besides that, Miss Christina has also stated in the interview that there are often students who
are her academic advisees with psychological issues which are quite a problem for her to deal
in the past. There are often troubled times, as Miss Christina has no idea on solutions for
these students because she does not have proper experience in psychology, and any attempts
to giving excess advice might result in the wrong way. At first, as an academic advisor, she
will feel helpless in these cases and will often turn to other lecturers in psychology courses to
aid them so that they will get to feel better. This was all she could do before the school
opened pathways for academic advisors to seek help from the school counsellors if lecturers
ever encounter psychological issues from students. For example, if students ever came to
Miss Christina in the position of an academic advisee seeking for help, she will accept the
case and start making an appointment with the school counsellors. Since Miss Christina has
no psychologic training from the start, a school counsellor will prepare a room, and will be
booking a time slot with Miss Christina and the troubled student. She will then sit inside the
room, accompanying her academic advisee without any interference, while the counsellor
will work and have a talk with the student. In cases of depression from her colleagues, Miss
Christina stated in the interview that she had not encountered any of these kinds of case yet,
as it is a more uncommon practice among lecturers. Major depression problems are not
present among lecturers as they just tend to talk it out when they are feeling unhappy or under
pressure.
Furthermore, through the interview with Miss Christina, it is known that lecturers also face
the problem of receiving negative comments and sometimes insults which are not actually
true as well. In the beginning, there were some really negative comments that were given by
students through feedbacks and some of these comments were quite difficult to accept, even
though some of them were true. Miss Christina found it difficult to sleep at first because it
was something that hurt her feelings and made her leave bad impressions of herself. She had
to think about it for a very long time before getting over it and decided to look into these
harsh comments to determine what is actually going on with her. After being quite
determined, Miss Christina knew that she had more important tasks to complete, which was
to improve her teaching and also finding out the truth. During the evaluation, Miss Christina
will go through the negative comments while analysing what was in the comments. She will
think about it, refresh her memory and try to judge if what the students said were true. In
some cases, there had been past complaints from quite a number of students that stated her
voice was too soft and it was difficult to learn and listen attentively. Trying to improve
herself, Miss Christina focused and reflected on her own problems without ignoring them.
Through time, her voice had gotten louder and brighter compared to the past before she was
receiving complaints. Things turned out for the better and Miss Christina seldom received
any complaints from students anymore.

Last but not least, there has been a problem that is being faced by Miss Christina in the
perspective of her work. For her tutorial classes of English for Management, the full duration
is only an hour while compared to other subjects which are normally taking up a duration of
an hour and a half. It was kind of an unfair situation as English for Management is still
considered an important subject and should be given a fair share of time as well. There is
always a lack of time to finish the syllabus because there is insufficient amount of time for
Miss Christina to fully finish teaching the entire syllabus. She will be in a hurry to finish
everything in the time given and it causes stress because there are just too many topics to go
over. With an insanely short amount of time, Miss Christina has to put in much more effort
compared to other lecturers to finish teaching the subject to fulfil her duty as a lecturer. Her
responsibility lies within herself and it is definitely giving her a really hard time. Miss
Christina has tried giving feedbacks to the school to extend the weekly hours of her tutorial,
but to no avail. This is because the school has its’ own policies and rules to follow, and the
tutorial hours are being set by higher officials, so it is mostly a lost cause. This is already
causing a lot of problems for Miss Christina as it is fairly difficult for her to achieve her own
objectives and that of the school. The amount of knowledge she is able to pass down to
students are also limited because there will be insufficient time for her to teach everything
included in the syllabus while having to take care of several different matters at the same time
without causing stress.
