STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Objective: Graduate studies in Communications Engineering to provide a necessary

framework for a career in Design of Communication modules and to play a key role in
fabrication industry, followed by Doctoral Studies at a later stage.

Being an average student in my early school days, it was only after my 8th grade, I
discovered my latent academic skills. Physics and Mathematics appealed to me. Though
basic electronics was a subject in Physics in my 12th Grade, I viewed all semiconductor
devices and oscillator circuits with an aversion, never knowing that it would be the world
of my near future.

After my schooling with good grades, I entered Hindustan College of Engineering

(affiliated to Anna University, Chennai), which is rated as one of the best institutions offering
Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering course in the state and that served as the
ground for my exposure towards electronics.

Thanks to Dr. Suja Abraham who taught me Engineering Physics with zeal in my 1st
semester. My perception about electronics was changed by her and my passion for
electronics aroused. I learnt the basics and concepts about electronics from faculty
members of the College. I have been securing distinction consecutively for the past three
and half years. I am ranked among the top 5 students in my class.

Initially communication engineering enthralled me in the 2nd year of my course. I

couldn’t imagine the working of modulators, waves and antennas. Communication and
embedded systems prompted me more to learn about them. After working hard for nearly
six months was I able to get a concept and visualize the intricacies in communication
system.

At the end of second year, I started working on my first project on “Controlling of

Aircraft using Computer through Wireless Communication”. At this stage, I had the
pleasure to work with Cyberdyne Technologies which is a pioneering establishment for
real-time engineering projects. This project was all about efficient control of aero-engine
and all the control surfaces of aircraft viz. ailerons, elevators, rudders and flaps using a
computer. In addition to this, I had also incorporated a camera to get an aerial view from
the aircraft. This project was successfully implemented on an aero-model under UAV.

Robotics & Automation was my elective during my third year and I started thinking of
implementation of wireless robots with some special applications. After checking on the
feasibility of the project, I finally ended up with “Wireless Mobile Robot with Edge
Detection and Surveillance System” with the technical guidance from Cyberdyne
Technologies. This wireless robot can be effectively controlled from the computer and its
edge detection system provides the intelligence to the robot to avoid toppling in course of
its motion. The surveillance system of the robot is carried out by a LASER snooper scope
which can pick up voice conversations at a distant place and a camera is attached on top
of the mobile robot platform. This project was implemented successfully at a cost of £340
and fetched me laurels when it was submitted as my final year project in the department.
Computer Networks and Distributed Control Systems was a subject during the 7th
semester and my focus shifted towards computer networks. I am currently working on
Proof of Concept development project on the title “Wireless Embedded Ethernet Router”
in Cyberdyne Technologies. The abstract of my two recent project works I have
mentioned above is enclosed along with this statement of purpose.

In addition to academics, I have also been an active student member in ISA

(Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Society, USA). The journals of this
organization had an influence in my project designs and implementation. I also attended a
one-month training program on PLCs, MMI, AC Drives and SCADA at Automation and
Control Systems, Pune.

As a part of my extra-curricular activities, I actively participated in National Cadet Corps

Organization which is a premier youth organization in India. I served as a Cadet Corporal
for three years and acquired “A” grade in the certificate examination. With overwhelming
support and trust of faculty members and students, I was selected as Treasurer for the
committee of our department that conducted the National Level Technical Symposium.
On behalf of the department, I had arranged some guest lectures. My communication
skills helped me in seminars on satellite and fiber optics communication. My website
gives my current project works and the various honours I won.

My primary areas of interest are communications, laser & fiber optics and embedded
systems. In view of my quest for knowledge, I would like to pursue my M.Sc., program at
your esteemed University. After acquiring skills on specialization areas, I plan to take up my
Doctoral Studies in the near future. My ambition is pure research, allowing me to integrate
my creativity and knowledge, keeping me at the helm of new advancements at all times.

I like the UK education system for its high standards. Especially in the field of
communication engineering, I believe that pioneered research establishments and
manufacturing companies would provide me with a global exposure in my arena. e.g.
Marconi, etc.

With an RAE of 6 and ranked 1st among the UK universities, I trust that the Dept. of ECS,
University of Southampton, with it’s host of latest research facilities and well-distinguished
faculty, will guide me towards achieving my goal in my field and thus opening up new vistas.
I admire the tradition, location and the rich cultural diversity that this University has and I am
sure it would give me the necessary ambience relevant for my studies.

I would like to conclude that, in me you would find a good student with a keen interest
towards research. I hope to join your esteemed University and I can assure that I would
sincerely work towards my degree.
