Introduction

What is the origin of language?

Since the dawn of civilization, language has been a part of human culture. Unlike

other living organisms, humans have developed a unique form of communication known

as language. Essentially, language is the bloodline of our society. It distinguishes race,

culture, and region; yet it also binds society closer by means of bilingualism,

multilingualism and various means of translation.

The origin of language is quite obscure. There are approximately 7,000 languages

in the present time, all of which are unique in their own aspects. The different aspects of

language can be traced down to a common ancestral origin.

What is colloquial language?

This study aims to acknowledge the effects of colloquial language towards formal

language in the modern world. Colloquial language refers to the implicated way of

conversation in a casual manner. Colloquialism has been widespread the past recent years

through the course of modernization. The word originated from the Latin word colloqui

which is derived from two words, com meaning with and loqui, meaning “conversation”.

Hence, the definition, “casual talk”. In this modern society, colloquialism can be found

mostly anywhere. It is so because Colloquial language is used in informal writing situations

and creates a conversational tone. Everyday spoken language gives your writing a casual,

relaxed effect. Colloquial language is not necessarily “wrong,” but it is used when a writer

is trying to achieve informality.

What is formal language?

On the other hand, formal language refers to the settled way of communication

generally acceptable by the standards and rules of literacy. It can also be referred to as

“traditional language”. Nowadays, formal language is still quite used, especially in

countries where English is a lingua. Although, there is still no denying the fact that not all

people can speak fluent English. Not all are confident with their English communication

skills. This is one of the main causes of a downfall in the usage of the formal English

language.

What is modernization?

Modernization is one of the key factors for this subliminal change. It is the

progressive transition that allows “pre-modern” or “traditional” aspects shift towards a

state of reaching the standards of modern society. As globalization rapidly developed,

language has evolved a lot through the course of a hundred years. Globalization is the

spread of products, technology, information, and jobs across national borders and cultures.

It is also known as the state of the large-scale adapting of people influenced by

modernization, in completing their daily tasks.

How does it provide an impact on the relationship between colloquial and

formal languages?

According to Inglehart, R. & C. Welzel of Cambridge, Cambridge University

Press., “Modernization is probabilistic, not deterministic. Economic development tends to

transform a given society in a predictable direction, but the process and path are not

inevitable. Many factors are involved, so any prediction must be contingent on the

2|Page
historical and cultural context of the society in question” said he, on his paper,

Modernisation, Cultural Change and Democracy (2005).

A. Significance of the Study

This study aims to investigate how colloquial language affects formal language in

terms of daily usage, social mindset, and cultural preservation. Most citizens of non-

English speaking nations experience difficulty in learning the formal English language, and

one major factor is colloquialism

The study would give benefit to:

Students- low esteem and insecurities empower the minds of most students nowadays.

Especially in terms of English fluency. Being knowledgeable about the effects of

colloquialism to their proficiency could help students conquer the problem

Parents- the Mother tongue provides a deeper aspect towards the linguistic learning of

children. Children exposed to colloquialism may experience higher difficulty in learning

formal language. The results of this study can help parents in proper exposure of their

children to a learning-centered home atmosphere

Teachers- the given data of the study can help teachers gain knowledge on what their

students might need, and what they would be able to provide their students. Proper

pronunciation, grammar, punctuation, and the like.

B. Statement of the Problem

1) How does colloquialism affect formal language

2) Is there any significant factor that can neglect the effects of colloquialism in learning

formal language?

C. Thesis Statement

Colloquial languages can negatively affect the trend of formal language in everyday use.

II. The effects of colloquial language to formal language in the modern

world

A. Colloquial language

1. Background

a. Origin and history

From the Latin word colloquium, it means "speaking together". Colloquialism

(sometimes referred to as slang) first became popular in the 1980’s. For multiple reasons,

it has become a trend. One of which is because colloquialism more commonly implicated

in speech, rather than in written outputs.

b. Modern impact

Colloquial language or “slang” is widespread nowadays. Millennials and Digital

Natives are the ones mainly affected by colloquialism. Nowadays, this so called “slang” is

not only used in speech, but also in texts, posters, infographics and the like. Colloquialism

has evolved a lot through the years and it has also been providing a large-scale impact in

4|Page
the daily lives of the people. Slang has been a part of our everyday livelihood and

communication that it neglects the importance of formal language in the mindset of the

people.

In modern literature, colloquialism has often been used to exclude instead of include. This

may be true in some cases where the use of language serves no purpose except to make it

less accessible and understandable only to people from certain sections of the society. But

there are several literary pieces that aim attract and repel the reader at the same time;

Dialogs with colloquial phrases often have a more far-reaching effect as compared to those

written formally that may be difficult to understand for some. These dialogs are often

responsible for the depth of the novel and also for creating a connection between the reader

and the characters.

2. Daily use

a. Benefits

Using colloquial language on a daily basis promotes self-recognition, exposure of

cultural colors, and cohesion within a community. Language plays a vital role in our

culture. It is well known that the way a person communicates can distinctively reveal a lot

about their culture. Colloquialism also allows people to be more vigilant and adaptive to

new vernacular words.

b. Setbacks

Language is stereotypically an indicator of class. Regular use of colloquial language can

infer someone as inferior. High profile institutions would prefer people with excellent

formal language skills as better off than others. Colloquialism has also been known to

5|Page
usually develop in highly casual environments, thus, it is a sign of unprofessionalism and

bad taste.

3. Expression of thoughts

a. Written

Colloquial terms especially in text form, whether it is a literary piece, information tool, or

entertainment. Colloquialism marks this as casualty and provides a less stress-inducing

vibe. written colloquial language is not as widespread as in speech. People need formality

with roughly most of the things that involve speaking with authority (Arjun Vadrevu)

i. Grammar

Grammar is an essential part in writing. Unfortunately, compared to as of formal

language; colloquial language has lower stand on grammar. Since it follows no rule of

formality and casualty must be shown, grammar is not probably

ii. Punctuation

In terms of punctuation, there are only a few minor differences compared to formal

language. Punctuations are only most of the time being forgotten.

b. Verbal

The verbal aspect of colloquial language is more of an impact compared to its

written counterpart.

i. Grammar

Grammar in the verbal part of colloquialism is he simplest of all its aspects.

The colloquial language occasionally does not follow the provided rules for grammar

6|Page
ii. Pronunciation

The pronunciation of colloquial terms is very different from normal ones. There is also a

gap between the two of them. Colloquial pronunciation may have an effect on the

pronunciation of words

B. Formal language

Formal language is the opposite of colloquial language. It is a sign of class and

professionalism. It also does not require the need for casualty. Instead, it depicts formality.

It follows the set standards of the English language. According to the Registered

Nursing.org, “In sharp contrast to informal writing and language, formal writing and

language follows and adheres to the strict rules of grammar and this kind of writing:

Is often composed with longer and more complex sentences and phrases with

details and descriptions about the main ideas of the writing passage, when compared to

informal writings

Is objective and without some of the personal emotions, feelings and beliefs that

are acceptable in informal language and readings

Is without or with only a rare occurrence of some forms of punctuation, like

exclamation points that convey a strong emotion

Is free of colloquialisms, slang, figures of speech, clichés, improper and broken

syntax, incomplete sentences, sentence fragments and other prohibitions when formal

writing and language are necessary and indicated”.

7|Page
C. Modernization

Modernization is one of the key factors for the subliminal change in language usage

. It is the progressive transition that allows “pre-modern” or “traditional” aspects shift

towards a state of reaching the standards of modern society. As globalization rapidly

developed, language has evolved a lot through the course of a hundred years. Globalization

is the spread of products, technology, information, and jobs across national borders and

cultures. It is also known as the state of the large-scale adapting of people influenced by

modernization, in completing their daily tasks.

1. Impact Towards Communication

a. Benefits

Modernization has been rapidly progressive. And changes in our system would be

inevitable. Modernization has brought us to the future of technology. We are at the era of

the digital natives where communication is easily attained by social media, smartphones,

gadgets and others. Communication became much easier. Contact comes in a single tap on

a screen. Modernization has also brought benefits like expansion of size and range of

vocabulary, the development of lexicons based on borrowings, changes in phonotactics,

and the abandonment of hybrid words.

b. Setbacks

Communication may be highly available, but the essence of conversation

diminishes. As the world undergoes change, language also changes the fact that

colloquialism is overpowering the impact of formal language. Mostly everything nowadays

8|Page
is of shortcuts, instants and “quick-gets”, that even language is being altered to compensate

for the laziness.

2. Impact Towards Preservation of Traditional Language

Like living organisms, language can also be categorized as ‘endangered” or “extinct”.

According to statistics in a report back in 2013, as many as half of the world’s 7,000

languages today would be extinct by the end of this century. A language becomes

endangered when it is no longer being taught to children (UNESCO). Modernization has

affected the people’s mindset of doing everything at an instant, even in communication. In

estimate, one language dies out every 14 days.

III. Conclusions

Colloquialism affects formal language by diverting attention of the people to

efficiently learn formal language, puts languages to risk of extinction, and removes the

essence of conversation.

However, colloquialism also improves adaptability and flexibility of a person’s

linguistic skills.

There is a significant factor that might neglect the effects of colloquialism o formal

language, education.

Research Abstract

Since the dawn of civilization, language has been a part of human culture. Ever

since then, language has been evolving into something much more than a way of

communication. In the depths of modernization, the people have been in demand of the

“instants”, thus, the rise of colloquialism. Colloquialism is a form of vernacular language

that coexists with formal language but foes not follow the strict rules of grammar. How do

colloquial languages affect formal language?

Colloquial language has its own benefits and setbacks to people. Colloquialism may

improve the adaptability of a person’s linguistic skills, exposure of cultural colors, and

culture distinction. On the other hand, colloquialism has been overpowering the impact of

formal language, the substantially accepted way of language in accordance to all

grammatical rules. Statistics show that about half of all current language today would be

extinct by the end of the century, which is an alarming statement, provided that there are

only minimal efforts of culture and language preservation.

The data showed that colloquialism does affect formal language; by expansion of

size and range of vocabulary, the development of lexicons based on borrowings, changes

in phonotactics, and the abandonment of hybrid words. There also the setbacks, the

progressive rise of colloquial language has been diverting the attention of the people away

from the formal education of language; grammar, pronunciation, punctuation and the like.
