2:45-3:45 Activity 3: Presentation of analysis results
3:45-4:00 Activity 4: Workshop evaluation and closing

Previous: GREETINGS AND WORKSHOP PRESENTATION 5’ (1:30-1:35)

The workshop agenda and objectives will be posted on the board or on a flipboard. Facilitator goes over
them.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:
 Explore background knowledge about main ideas in each assessment principle
 Analyze whether teacher-generated tests align with the 5 assessment principles
 Discuss the results of the analysis with the class
 Reflect on the development of the workshop focusing on the learning experience, the
methodology and the learning outcome

Activity 1 ASSESSMENT PRINCIPLES REVIEW 30´ (1:35-2:05)

OBJECTIVE: Explore background knowledge about main ideas in each assessment principle

DEVELOPMENT
 Facilitator pastes 5 paper sheets around the classroom. Each sheet has an assessment principle
heading (practicality, reliability, validity, authenticity, washback).
 Then, participants walk around writing one thing they know from each principle.
 When everyone is done, the facilitator reads the ideas out loud and checks whether they are
related to the principle in each sheet. He/she provides a brief explanation for each principle and
tells participants that they will study this content more deeply in session 6 of the module (this
explanation applies to sessions 1-5)

RESOURCES: 5 color paper sheets, masking tape, permanent markers

Activity 2 ASSESSMENT HANDS-ON: ANALYZING TEACHER-GENERATED TESTS 40´ (2:05-2:45)

Assessment Worskshop 1
OBJECTIVE: Analyze whether teacher-generated tests align with the 5 assessment principles

DEVELOPMENT
 Participants get in pairs and they exchange the sample tests they were previously asked to bring
(This applies to sessions 2-8. For session 1, they will be given a sample to analyze; the tests
participants bring must have been created by them). They take 5 minutes to read the test and
get familiar with it.
 Then, each participant is given a checklist. The facilitator reads the items out loud and makes
sure everybody understands how they will use it.

 Every participant focuses on their partner’s test and uses the checklist to analyze whether it
complies with all principles or not. If possible, he/she provides some comments about areas that
need improvement.

RESOURCES: Assessment principles checklists

PHOTOCOPIES: Assessment principles checklist (ONE PER PARTICIPANT)

Activity 3 PRESENTATIONS OF ANALYSIS RESULTS 60´ (2:45-3:45)

OBJECTIVE: Discuss the results of the analysis with the class

DEVELOPMENT:
 Once participants have finished analyzing their partner’s tests, they will give it back and share
their results and comments. They will list similarities and differences between their results.
 Then, assign each half of the groups a role: presenters or listeners. Presenters will be located
around the classroom and listeners will take turns visiting one pair at a time. Each pair will have
5 minutes to share their results. Once listeners have visited all the presenters, they exchange
roles and repeat the same procedure.

Activity 4 WORKSHOP EVALUATION AND CLOSING 15´ (3:45-4:00)

OBJECTIVE: Reflect on the development of the workshop focusing on the learning experience, the
methodology and the learning outcome

DEVELOPMENT
 Workshop conclusion: The facilitator emphasizes the importance of taking into account the 5
assessment principles when designing an evaluation instrument and motivates participants to
use the checklist given to verify any test they will administer in the near future.
 Workshop assessment: Participants volunteer to express their opinion of the workshop through
questions like: What are some takeaways from the workshop? What are its strengths and
weaknesses? Facilitator goes over the workshop objectives and the whole class analyzes
whether they were met.
 Participants are encouraged to continue attending the workshops in future sessions, as they
focus on improving several areas of the English teaching process through practical strategies.
