On Tuesday, Feb. 26 both men’s and women’s tennis faced off
against Mount St. Mary’s University. The men’s tennis team
swept the Mount 7-0, pushing their overall record to 6-1. This is
the first time since the 2011-12 season that the men have held a
6-1 record. The women’s tennis team prevailed, winning 6-1
with their third straight win. Both teams competed at 2 pm ...

expand their understanding of
the patient populations they
want to work with,” Dr. Rubens
said.

said, speaking about National
Geographic.
Frost continued stating, “It’s
a very respected institution, to
be a part of that is very exciting.
It felt like I was joining a family,
not just getting a grant.” Frost
said that the most important
thing about the grant was not
the money but instead that it
opened doors to meet people
who have accomplished things.
As Frost continued his
career, he had support from
family and friends. When he
first started working with
National Geographic as a film-
maker, he worked with an
editor that told him that she
believes this minor is a “natural
complement” to the to the in-

that it does so in an “innovative
way.”
Dr. Rubens said, “It connects
the clinical and allied health
sciences with the liberal arts,

During her time in Martin
Hall, she will also be assisting
the administration with other
projects related to the merger.
Dr. Rubens added she was
“thrilled” when she found out
she was accepted.
“It is an honor to receive
this distinguished fellowship
opportunity, and I am very
excited to work with President
Hemphill and his leadership
team,” Dr. Rubens said in an
email sent out to the Radford
campus. “I would like to also
thank Dr. Rosemary Guruswamy,
chair of Radford University’s
Department of English, for

run into plenty of things.”
Frost recalled the time he
went to Lebanon, Iran and when
he went to Syria in 2008 and
how he had an extraordinary
experience. “None of its really
any different than in the U.S,”
he explained. He compared the

in an email, “Dr. Rubens has a
proven track record at Radford
University and one that is
focused on teaching excellence
and student success.”

Prevention had warned them
about bats that carried the
Marburg virus in the exact caves
they were mapping. Marburg is
similar to Ebola. This warning
didn’t stop Frost from entering
the caves, because he learned
you could only get it if the bats
pooped on you, in your eye, or
mouth.
Now Frost is currently
working on his first independent
book about human interactions
with snakes. Whether it be
revering them, hating them,
killing them, keeping them as
pets, etc. Frost expects to be a
three- or four-year-long project.

students bring the global
community together on
campus with the 28th annual
international banquet. The
event showcases diverse people,
cultures, music, and food from
around the globe.
The event is hosted by ISAC,
the International Student Affairs
Council, made up of American
and international students alike.
The banquet started as a potluck
dinner between friends 28 years
ago and has now grown to an
event that hosts more than 300
people. This year’s theme is
“cultural infusion,” showcasing
the bountiful diversity found
around Radford University, and
how it all fuses. There will be
music, food, performances and

students and international
students an experience of a

Taking Time Away From School

A
fter graduating from
high school in 2017, I
decided to take a year off
from school, which is commonly
called a gap year.
I rarely enjoyed high school.
Most of my time in class was
spent daydreaming about
what life would be like after
graduation. I dreamed about
being free, having no restrictions
or responsibilities.
Those desires manifested
themselves into the idea of a
road trip across the country.
I worked through the
summer, then set out in
September. For months, I
traveled and visited almost
every region of the country.
Along the way, I met all types of
people, explored different cities,
and camped in many national
parks. It was by far the greatest
experience of my life.
However, I believe time away
from school can be beneficial for
anyone and the benefits that I
list can be gained in many ways,
not just from taking a road trip.
Becoming a More Motivated
Student
For the first couple of
months, I enjoyed my lack
of responsibility, but I soon
realized without responsibilities
I felt no purpose. Having time
away from work explained to me
why we work.
I no longer sigh when
assigned a project like I would
in high school. Now, I feel
motivated to accomplish tasks
because I realized achievement
is what brings me that sense of
purpose.
Taking time away from
school can also help you realize
the value society puts on people
with an education. Getting a job
that I wanted seemed like a very
arduous task without the help of
a college education.
Having Time to Think and
Explore Interests
After high school, I wasn’t
sure what I wanted to pursue.
Taking time to think really
helped me figure it all out.
I was free throughout most
of the days to explore whatever
interested me. For a while, I
was interested in psychology,
so I read books written by
psychologists. Another time
I was interested in bikes, so I
bought a bike and learned how
to fix it up.
I went through a lot of phases
during the year, but I noticed
my interests always came back
to cameras and writing. Now I
study media and journalism and
feel very certain that it is the
career path for me.
College can be a good place
to figure out what you want to
do, but it is a very expensive

smarter option would be to know
what you want to pursue and use
college as a tool to get you there.
Knowing what you want to
do before studying at college
can provide you with more
motivation to perform well in
college too. It’s much easier to
achieve a goal when the goal is
clear and concise.
Making Friends with Wiser
People
All my friends were in
college during my time away, so
I was forced to meet new people.
Since everyone my age was in
school, I ended making friends
with people older than me.
Usually with people who already
had jobs.
I learned of their stories
about how they got their jobs,
and most of the time, whether I
wanted it or not, they were more
than happy to give me advice on
what I should do with my life.
Meeting new people also
opened my eyes to all the
different ways you can live.
From meeting a family who lived
in a mansion in LA to meeting
a man who lived on the side of
a mountain with no car in the
middle of nowhere, I was able to
witness many walks of life.
The best part about making
these connections is I still
have them, which may come
in handy somewhere down
the road. Connections can be

built in college very easily,
but the kind of people you can
build connections with may be
limited. This is because there
are many more people out in
the real world than there is in a
college environment.
Gaining Work Experience
For the latter half of my year
off, I worked at a rock climbing
gym. The work wasn’t anything
career oriented, but I enjoyed
it and it gave me experience in
working with customers and co-
workers.
By taking time away from
school, you could get a job or
internship that would help you
gain experience in the field you
are pursuing. Working a job in a
field that you are interested in
can also help you decide if you
really do want to study that field.
Volunteering is another way
you could gain work experience
and explore interests.
Learning Independence
On my road trip, I had to take
care of myself completely. Mom
wasn’t around to make food
anymore, so I cooked most of
my food on a little backpacking
stove. I also learned how to
budget my money, make small
repairs to my car, and keep
things organized.

things, but by doing them on
your own, it gives you a sense
that you are prepared to live in
this world. Taking time away
from school is a perfect way to
experience these responsibilities
without the onlooking of an
authority figure, especially at
this age when you still have your
parents as a backup.
You Can Have an Amazing
Experience
Lastly, you could have a ton
of fun!
Taking a cross-country road
trip is the experience I wanted
to have, but your experience
could be anything from thinking
and sitting at home to traveling
across the world.
There is no better time to
do something adventurous than
in your college-age years. Most
likely you don’t have a job that
you can’t leave, you don’t have
kids and a family to take care of,
and you are nearing the prime of
your fitness.
I am by no means saying we
shouldn’t go to college, or that
everyone should take time away.
If you know why you’re here,
you should stay here. However,
I have friends who enter college
simply because their peers and
family have pushed them to
go to college. It leaves them
confused, unmotivated, and in
debt.
That’s really who I’m writing
this article for, those who may
feel lost at school. I believe
some things you have to figure
out on your own, especially
when it comes to determining
your future. I have found that
taking time away from school
can help you do that.
Also, I don’t believe you
necessarily have to drop out
to take time away from school.
You can set aside an hour or two
each day to pursue an interest.
Just make sure you have time
spent away from schoolwork and
people who may influence your
decision making.
These were the benefits
that I personally gained from
my time away from school. I
hope this article provided some
guidance, but in the end, you
have followed your gut and
make your path.

A Critique on Radford

I
came to Radford University
as a transfer student in
the fall of 2016. Now that I
have been here for a while and
am getting ready to graduate, I
would like to share my thoughts
on this place.
Let’s start with the
advantages. The campus is a
perfect size. It does not take as
long to get places compared to
other campuses. The farthest
walk on campus for me is
about 10 minutes, which can be
somewhat of a relief if you are
in a hurry. On the other hand,
the buildings are close to one
another, making them easy to
find once you know your way
around.
The professors are very
helpful and skilled in their
fields. Most of the professors
I have worked with are experts
and are willing to help their
students succeed. They can
tell when you are working hard
and putting effort into your
work. They often make classes
engaging by playing videos and
having students do in-class
activities.
There are tons of ways for
students to get involved on
campus. Joining Greek life,

employers to hire you. Every
school highly encourages its
students to be more involved
on campus and here is why
you should start building these
connections now.
According to US news, in an
article discussing the reasons
of why students should be
involved, it says, “It allows
students to become connected to
their school: Colleges are full of
resources, but the responsibility
is on the student to seek them
out. Being involved helps them
to do that.”
Involvement will help you
gain a lot of experience with
many different aspects of life
such as how to make new friends,
learn what the real world is after
college, and learning how to
sports teams or student media
are just a few ways to make your
college years more memorable.
There are also a variety of clubs
that allow you to explore new
and current interests. With so
many options available, you are
sure to find something that suits
you.
Another one of my favorite
things about Radford is its
small class sizes. I often feel
invisible in larger classes and
don’t participate as much. Large
crowds can be intimidating
for introverts like myself who
prefer to just sit and listen.
Small classes of 20 students or
fewer allow more opportunities
for interaction and forming
connections.
While Radford has many
advantages, there are also
some disadvantages. One
disadvantage is noise, especially
in the dorms. When I lived in
the dorms, the people on my
floor were very loud. They were
always yelling, blasting music
and slamming doors. Being
surrounded by all this activity
makes it hard to study and
relax. Most residents seem to
be unaware that residence halls
have quiet hours and violate
them.
Another disadvantage of
Radford is the parking situation.
Most of the parking spots are
make plenty of connections that
might help you go places. Also,
it might help you improve your
skills with leadership, public
speaking, coordinating and
planning events.
At Radford University, the
options are countless, and you
have more than 300 clubs and
organizations in different fields
and interests to choose from.
Each one of them is a diverse
and friendly place to share your
ideas and be more creative.
All you have to do to
get involved is to check the
university’s calendar to see
when it has its club fair, which is
usually at the beginning of every
semester. You will be amazed by
the variety of clubs we have on
our campus.
If you face a time conflict
with the club fair date, they made
it easy for you. You can sign up
online by going to RU Involved
and pick what organization
interests you the most.

One more disadvantage
of Radford is the vending
machines. Some of them contain
expired food and drinks and the
touchpad is difficult to use.
Also, whenever I use them, I
have to pay with cash because
they don’t take my RU express
card. If they were maintained
more often, these things would
different people from a diverse
background and culture,
you’re educating yourself on
how to accept and embrace
other people. One of the most
important reasons why you
should be involved is also so you
can build a strong relationship
with some of your professors
and instructors.
It helps widen your circle
of connections which will
open different career paths
for you. Also, try to attend as
many events as you can such as
JumpStart (Career Development
Conference), which will give
you the chance to listen to
professionals with experience.
Among these are alumni who
share their stories about their
lives after college and their best
advice on how to survive adult
life. Just keep an eye out on
the dates of those conferences
which will be sent to your school
email.
Also, don’t be anxious if you
feel like you don’t fit in with a

bother us. I have made many
memories here and will look
back on them for years to come.

Succeeding in the Fashion Design Major

experiences, where you
figure out what you want
to do in life.
Part of the college
experience is choosing the
major that’s just right for you.
For me, I chose fashion design,
and it’s not as easy as it sounds.
For anyone who’s interested in
fashion design, here are my tips
for succeeding in this major.
Fashion design deals with
a lot of critical thinking, and
nothing is what it seems. You
come to understand that not
every person can think about

You start off with the basics of

A page designer creates the look, layout, and features of our
design. You learn the principles
and elements in all your design
classes which are both lecture
and studio based. This is because
they want these terms ingrained
into every design major’s brain.
Being a fashion design major,
heck a design major in general,
you’re going to have some out-
of-pocket costs. Your design kit
that is needed for your freshman
year, which has a lot of good
resources, costs roughly around
$220.
Once you get to the second
semester of your freshman year,
you get more projects. You get
crazy abstract inspirations for
these projects and you have to
be just as abstract. It’s a lot of
meticulous work, some projects
can take you days to plan
because you have to perceive
the assigned inspiration in your
own way.
For students in the fashion
design major, planning is
coming up with an idea and if it
can’t be made into a reality you
go through the design process of
identification, ideation, design
development, implementation,
and evaluation. You must
remember designers are problem
solvers.
Once the student iron out
their issues and have a good idea,
then comes the hard part finding
the materials to work with.
This means you are going to be
running to Walmart, and if you
can’t find it at Walmart, you’re
traveling to Christiansburg to
look in Michael’s, JOANN, and
Hobby Lobby to buy materials.
If you follow the criteria and

implement your design for your
project, you’ll get a good grade.
For design classes, because
all design majors are grouped
together in your lecture classes
and separate in studio classes,
you can’t miss more than two or
three lectures.
This is because there is a lot
of material and some lecture
classes have guest speakers and
group project dates, and like
most college classes, attendance
is part of your grade. After a
certain amount of days, you
get points deducted from your
grade and to stay in the design
program, you have to keep your
grades at a C or higher.
The tests are challenging,
but if you study your notes or
download them off D2L then you
should pass the tests with ease.
I find the projects to be
my favorite part of my classes
because they bring out my best
creativity and push me to excel
when planning. Most of my ideas
are the definition of extra.
The keys to succeeding in
fashion design are study your
notes, remember the design
process, remember the elements
and principles of design, meet
the criteria for every project,
listen to your professors because
they will help you in the right
direction, be prepared to spend
money on materials for projects,
be prepared to think critically,
show up to class, and the most
important thing to remember
is to be yourself, because in the
design world we love an original
queen.

Women’s Basketball Team Is Untouchable

ight hundred and two
enthusiastic fans gathered
in attendance on senior
day inside the Dedmon center
as The Radford Highlanders (21-
6) defeated The USC Upstate
Spartans (7-19) on Mar. 2.  This
victory earned the Highlanders
win number 13 of their
consecutive win streak.
The Highlanders also sit at
a remarkable (21-6) record on
the season.  The win also earned
the Highlanders home games
throughout the entirety of the
Big South Tournament, meaning
that fans have a treat in store for
them beginning on Mar. 14 as the
Highlanders are back in action for
the quarterfinals.
The first half of the Highlander
Spartan matchup was tightly
contested as there wasn’t a lead
of larger than 5 points by either
team.
The Highlanders led the
highly anticipated contest with a
score of 27 to 22 at halftime.
The Spartans began to show
promise around the 7:28 mark in
the third quarter as they lead 28
to 27.

he Highlanders Baseball
squad began the 2019
season dropping three
games to East Carolina but
with the help of redshirt-senior
outfielder Andrew Szamski and
freshman infielder David Bryant,
they were able to bounce back
with a two-game sweep over
Bucknell University.
Szamski was awarded Big
South Player of the week and
Bryant achieved his first Big
South Honors as Freshman
Player of the Week. Their
contributions for both neutral
site victories led to a 9-1 victory
on Saturday the 24th and a 17-4
victory the following Sunday.
In the first match-up against
Bucknell Szamski tallied 3
The contest looked to be going
well for the Spartans as they only
trailed 34 to 30 with 2:52 left in
the third quarter.  Redshirt Junior
forward Savannah Felgemacher
(13 points) would then score nine
dominate points to close out
the third quarter increasing the
Highlander lead to eleven points.
As the score read to 41 to 30
the Spartans couldn’t quite catch
back up as the Highlanders kept a
comfortable lead throughout the
fourth quarter. They would go on
to win the contest 55 to 43 on a
very special day for the program!
Redshirt-junior forward
Lydia Rivers earned her eleventh
double-double of the season
as she still leads the big south
conference in rebounds.  Rivers
also led the team in scoring on the
evening as she produced 16 points
and snatched 13 rebounds in
addition to her 3 blocks.Redshirt
junior Sidney Nunley dominated
from her center position on the
evening as she added 13 points
and 13 rebounds off the bench.  court that they have.   They went

Walker celebrated her senior day
as she produced 9 points and 3
steals from her guard and forward
hits from 4 at-bats and an RBI.
In Sunday’s afternoon game,
Szamski hit a pair of two-run
homers and scored three times
to aid the Highlanders win in
seven innings. He leads the team
with three long ball hits and
seven RBIs this season already.
Szamski finished the weekend
against Bucknell going 5-for-7
from the plate
Bryant’s performances
in both Bucknell games were
equally impressive as he was
able to bring in the final blow
in the first game hitting a single
up the middle to bring his
teammate Colby Higgerson to
home plate. In the second game,
her hit 2-for-3 from the plate
followed by an RBI and scored a
pair of runs.
The Highlanders played
again over the weekend
following the second Bucknell
position.
The Highlander defense
performed above average as they
forced the Spartans to shoot poor.  On Mar. 9 The Highlanders
Upstate only made 19 of their 59
shots and even executed poorly
for 3-point range only making 2
of their 22 shots.
The Highlanders are no
strangers to dominating in the
paint as they have been doing all
season with the amazing front-
on to display that producing
41 points down low against the
Spartan defense.
The Highlanders look to seek
revenge on Mar 6 at 7 pm as they
invite Hampton to the Dedmon
center for a highly anticipated
game against Wofford. Szamski
and Bryant both played an
important role in the match-up.
Unfortunately they fell to the
Terriers in a slightly contested
bout 10-9.
Bryant hit his first career
home run in the sixth inning.
Bryant utilized Szamski’s
sacrifice right field fly to tally
a run for Bryant and an RBI for
Szamski.
Szamski finished the
weekend series going 6-for-10
for the weekend with 6 RBIs and
6 runs. He posted the highest
on-base percentage in the Big
South at .677. Bryant tallied a
run in all three games and had
.615 on-base percentage with
four hits and four walks.

go 2-1 for one on the weekend

Tennis Dominates Mount St. Mary’s

dominated on court 2 with a 6-2

n Tuesday, Feb. 26 both
men’s and women’s
tennis faced off against
Mount St. Mary’s University.
The men’s tennis team
swept the Mount 7-0, pushing
their overall record to 6-1. This
is the first time since the 2011-
12 season that the men have
held a 6-1 record. The women’s
tennis team prevailed, winning
6-1 with their third straight win.
Both teams competed at 2 pm in
Radford at the Radford Tennis
Complex.
Radford men’s tennis began
the match with doubles against
Mount St. Mary’s. Yevhen Sirous,
a sophomore from Ukraine, and
Rodrigo Magalhaes, a junior from
Portugal, came out of the gate
strong with a 6-1 victory on court.
The second victory on court
2 by Alexandros Caldwell, a
senior from Greece, and Michiel
Meekers, a redshirt senior from
Belgium, pushed the Highlanders
into a 1-0 lead.
Moving onto singles, Radford
6-1 on court 5. Matko Varga, a
junior from Croatia, won 6-2, 6-1
on court 6. Magalhaes carried
his energy from doubles into his
singles match with his second
appearance back on the court
after missing a couple of matches,
winning 6-1, 6-1.
Sirous stepped back onto
court 1, earning a victory of 6-3,
6-3. Caldwell joined in on the
sweep, winning 6-0, 6-4 on court
3. The final match in singles,
Meekers had the opportunity to
give the Highlanders a full sweep.
He prevailed, winning 6-3, 6-2,
ending the match on a high note.
Radford men’s tennis has a 5
match winning streak, looking to
continue it on March 12th at the
College of Charleston in South
Carolina. The Highlanders have
been protecting Radford turf,
going 3-0 at home and not losing
a doubles match in the NRV or on
the road.
Radford women’s tennis came
out to defend their home turf and
did just that. The Highlanders
out the double with a victory of
the same score.
The Highlanders brought the
intensity from doubles straight
into singles. Belyaeva started off
with a 6-2, 6-1, win on court 1 for
the first point in singles matches.
Acierto faced her opponent on
court 3, walking off with a 6-3,
6-1 victory and pushing the
Highlanders to a 3-0 lead. An
exciting day for Leahy, a freshman
from Evans, GA, she earned her
first victory as a Highlander with
a 6-1, 6-3 win. Leahy’s point gave
Radford a 4-0 lead.
In the final three matches,
Radford women’s tennis battled
to the end in a tiebreaker. Drousile
Dzeubou, a junior from Italy,
fought and prevailed with a 6-7,
6-2, 10-5 win. Falk took the court
once again and won the tiebreaker
with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 score.
Women’s tennis next match
will be on the road, facing off
against the Winthrop University
Eagles. The Highlanders will
