BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB

The ACR-2000 Reader is a precision instrument designed to scan phosphor plates and directly measure x-ray
exposure over a wide dynamic range with a high signal-to-noise ratio. This is accomplished by illuminating the
plate with a laser that is imaged onto the plate as the plate is moved perpendicularly to the laser. The emitted light is
collected, converted to an electrical signal and digitized to provide an 8- or 12- bit resolution image that can be
stored on disk, transferred to other computers or be processed, manipulated or printed. The ACR-2000 Eraser is
designed to efficiently erase exposed and read plates for reuse.
The ACR-2000 Reader has many features that can be controlled by software. Images may be digitized with 8 or 12
bit resolution, bytes may be reversed for viewing on other computer systems and custom tables can be utilized to
transform data. Further information regarding these features may be obtained from the documents listed below.
This document contains a basic technical overview of the ACR-2000 Reader and the ACR-2000 Eraser. The optics,
digital hardware and software subsystems are explained, as well as the subsystems’ functionality and general user
operation. Unpacking, hardware installation and system specifications are also included. This document is intended
for users who may need to understand the principles of operation and the interfacing requirements for the ACR-
2000 Reader and Eraser.

• To install the ACR-2000, follow the Hardware Installation Procedures (next section).

2.2 Hardware Installation

2.2.1 Tools Required
• A small flat bladed screwdriver.
2.2.2 Connection / Disconnection and Power On / Off Sequences
When connecting power and / or data cables and / or powering on the ACR-2000, (including the first time), perform
the following steps in the order indicated:
• First, connect the interface cable.
• Second, connect the AC power cable.
• Third, power on the ACR-2000.

3. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB

The ACR-2000 is a tabletop laser phosphor plate reader that brings together performance and durability at an
affordable price. Adaptable to most digital imaging applications, the ACR-2000 integrates easily into most
computer environments.

)LJXUH$&5

3.1 Optics
The ACR-2000 is a self-contained unit housing a laser, laser power supply, fixed optics and mirrors, a scanning
galvanometer and a light detection system.
As a beam source, the ACR-2000 uses a laser diode that generates over 15 mW of visible light. The laser beam is
directed into the focusing lens. After passing through the focusing lens, the laser beam is directed to a galvanometer
scanner. This galvanometer scanner has a precision mirror that sweeps the beam across the plate plane via a folding
mirror.
Light is collected in an integrating cylinder immediately in front of the plate plane. This collected light is detected
by a photomultiplier tube (PMT) inserted in the side of the cylinder. The PMT converts the detected light energy,
which was emitted from the storage phosphor plate, into an analog electrical signal which is processed,
logarithmically amplified, corrected for temporal fluctuation in laser output and then digitized by an A/D converter.

3.2 Power and Electronics

3.2.1 Printed Circuit Boards
The electrical subsystem of the ACR-2000 consists of the Data Control Board (DCB), which is located in the
user’s host computer such as a PC-AT, and 5 other boards which are located within the ACR-2000. These boards
are:
Data Acquisition (DACQ)
PMT Pre-Amplifier
LED Indicator
Galvo Control
Laser Driver (with interlocks)
3.2.1.1 Data Control Board
The Data Control Board via control registers controls all reader operations. Although some of these registers are
physically located on the Data Acquisition Board, they are accessed through the Data Control Board. Once a scan is
initiated, data acquisition is automatic, requiring no intervention until the image has been written into image
memory on the Data Control Board. Image data can be transferred out of image memory during or after image
acquisition.

3.2.1.2 Data Acquisition Board

The Data Acquisition Board performs all the signal conditioning and data acquisition functions, including
calibration and lookup table functions. In addition, this board controls the plate motor drive.

3.2.1.3 PMT Pre-Amp Board

The PMT Pre-Amp Board provides a power connection and takes a low-level signal from the PMT and amplifies it
for further processing by the Digital Acquisition Board.

18
$&52SHUDWRU·V5HIHUHQFH*XLGH

3.2.1.4 LED Indicator Board

The LED Indicator Board contains two LED indicator lamps, one to indicate when power is on, marked
"POWER", and one to indicate when a scan is in process, marked "SCAN".

3.2.1.5 Galvo Control Board

The Galvo Control Board contains drive and feedback circuits for controlling the position and velocity of the
scanning mirror.

3.2.1.6 Laser Driver Board (with Interlocks)

The Laser Driver Board contains drive and conditioning circuits for controlling the laser. Interlock switches are
provided to disconnect DC power to the Laser Driver board when any cover is removed.

3.2.2 Power Distribution

The ACR-2000 contains four power supplies (see Figure 3-3). One high voltage supply is for the PMT. A triple
output linear supply provides +/- 12 volts and +5 volts for general power. Two dual output, linear +/- 15-volt
supplies are also used. One provides power for the PMT high voltage supply and the other provides power to drive
the plate motor and the galvo.

5. OPERATING THE ACR-2000 READER

BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB

5.1 Plate Handling and Loading

Exposed phosphor plates that are to be digitized should be handled carefully to avoid introducing scratches,
excessive fingerprints and/or static.
To digitize a 14" x 17" plate, insert the plate against the media holder as shown in Figure 5-1. The plate should be
loaded top end in, with the phosphor-coated surface of the plate facing the reader.
To digitize smaller plates, such as a 24 cm x 30 cm, insert the plate into the media holder as before, but with the
plate centered approximately (within an inch or so) with respect to the holder.

)LJXUH3ODWH/RDGLQJ

5.2 Reading a Plate

Once a plate has been placed into the plate input chute, the user may initiate a scan. Once started, the plate will be
moved into position, the edges found and the plate digitized. Care must be taken during the digitization of the plate,
do not pull on the plate or jar the ACR-2000 Reader.
Lumisys provides a sample application that will digitize CR plates using an ACR-2000 Reader. For further details
on the use of this software, see Appendix C.

5.3 Removal of Plate Jams and Using the Scan Abort Button
If a jam occurs or the user wishes to stop a scan in process he/she can press the SCAN ABORT button located near
the plate input chute. See Figure 4-1. When the SCAN ABORT button is pressed, the software driver is notified
and it will stop the plate drive motor and abort the scan. Further pressing of the SCAN ABORT button will cause a
toggle action which will start/stop the plate drive motor as well as reverse its direction. A typical sequence is as
follows:
1st press Digitization is aborted and plate drive motor stopped.
2nd press Motor is started in the reverse direction.

24

7. THE ACR-2000 ERASER

BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB

7.1 General Information

Each ACR-2000 Reader comes with an ACR-2000E Eraser. The eraser is used to erase a CR phosphor plate before
it is exposed and read in the ACR-2000 Reader. It has no other intended use. It is a stand-alone unit and has no
physical connection to the reader, but should be mounted in close proximity to the reader for operational
convenience.
Each eraser is permanently configured for either 120 or 230 volts and may not be changed.

7.2 Site Requirements

The ACR-2000E is intended to be mounted on the wall. There are two keyhole slots on the rear panel, spaced 16
inches apart. Mount the unit to a wall within six feet of an AC wall outlet and in close proximity to the reader. The
bottom edge of the unit should be between three and five feet from the floor, four is recommended.
The working area where the reader and eraser are located must be dimly lit (so you can see what you are doing), but
with no more than 2 exposure units of light striking the front surface of the reader.

7.3 Installation
To install the unit, first make sure that it is NOT plugged in. Remove the front panel and disconnect the two cables
(the small green light and the timer pushbutton) from the printed circuit assembly near the top of the unit. Depress
the latch levers on the connectors to disconnect them. If necessary, the lamps may be temporarily removed by
releasing the plastic retaining clips on the left, lifting the metal retaining clip away from the socket about 1/8” and
then sliding the lamp to the left.
For hollow wall construction, the recommended method is to mount the unit to two #10 wood or sheet metal screws
firmly screwed through the unit’s keyhole slots into wall studs. If wall studs are unavailable, use #10 toggle or
molly-type hollow wall fasteners. For concrete walls, use an approved fastening method rated for at least 30 lbs.
each.
When the mounting is complete, reinstall the lamps if you have removed them. Be sure that the plastic retaining
clips are snapped closed. Reconnect the two cables to the printed circuit assembly and reattach the front panel.
Connect the eraser’s power entry connector to the AC wall outlet using the supplied AC power cable. Turn on the
unit’s power switch and verify that the lights turn on. Press the timer switch and observe the green light go on and
an audible alarm after 60 seconds.

7.4 Usage Guidelines

The unit is intended to be left on either continuously (24 hours per day, 7 days per week) or continuously during
normal working hours. Do not turn it on and off for each plate – the lamps will not last nearly as long.
A CR plate may be erased in the Eraser in the dark or with the room lights on. Each plate should be erased no more
than 2 hours prior to making an exposure.
After a plate is used (exposure followed by reading), a plate MUST be erased before reuse.
Care must be taken in handling the plates to prevent damage. Follow the CR plate manufacturer’s instructions for
handling, cleaning and storage. Keep your plates clean and free of dust, dirt, lint, fingerprints, etc. Use the CR plate
cleaner recommended by or available from the plate manufacturer. Use only soft, clean cleaning material to avoid
damage to the plate. When not being read, CR plates should be stored in a cassette.

7.5 Operation of the ACR-2000 Reader and Eraser

1. An erased plate is placed into an appropriate cassette and an x-ray exposure is made.

29
$&52SHUDWRU·V5HIHUHQFH*XLGH

2. Under dim-light conditions, the cassette is opened, the exposed plate is removed and then placed against the
media holder located on the top of the ACR-2000 Reader.
3. The plate is then read, after which the plate drops into the catch tray on the reader.
4. The plate just read is removed from the catch tray and erased in the eraser:
• Extend the eraser slider.
• Insert the plate into the eraser slider, white phosphor side toward the eraser.
• Slide the slider (and plate) into the eraser.
• Press the timer button once.
• Wait for the beep and/or the green light to go out (60 sec).
• Remove the plate and place it into its light-tight cassette.
If a plate has been grossly overexposed, two erase cycles may be required to remove the image. If you don’t, you
may see a ‘ghost’ image on the next exposure. You can either perform two erase cycles (as described above), or,
after you press the timer button, wait 5 seconds and press it again. This will start a 120-sec erase cycle.

7.6 Maintenance

WARNING
BEFORE REPLACING ANY FUSES, DISCONNECT THE ERASER’S
AC POWER CORD.

The eraser is protected by either one or two AC line fuses, depending upon the eraser’s line voltage configuration.
110 /120 Volt One 2.5 Amp, 250 Volt Slo-Blo fuse (Lumisys Part Number 37-996)
230 / 240 Volt Two 1.25 Amp, 250 Volt Slo-Blo fuse (Lumisys Part Number 69-416-04)
The line fuses may be replaced by flipping off the power entry connector’s cover and removing the plastic fuse
block.
The eraser circuit assembly is additionally fused with a 315 mA, 250 Volt fuse (Lumisys part Number 69-416-01).
It may be replaced by unscrewing the small, round black fuse cap located next to the eraser’s power entry connector.
Lamps must be replaced only with compact fluorescent 55 W, 3000º K lamps (Lumisys Part Number 70-386).
