Projectile Motion Problems

Remember that velocity and displacement are vectors, which have horizontal and
vertical components. You must find these components first and then reconstruct your
vector at the end. If you have a vector (such as initial velocity) that you wish to work
with, you must first split it into its components.

1. A sky rocket is fired horizontally from a cliff at an initial speed of 40 m/s. What
is the displacement of the rocket and what is the velocity 3.3 seconds after firing ??
(Remember: displacement and velocity are BOTH vector quantities and both will have
a size/magnitude AND a direction!)

2. Two buildings are separated by a distance of 80 meters. A ball is thrown from

one building to the other, at an angle θ to the horizontal and strikes the other building
3.6 seconds later. (acceleration of gravity = 9.8 ms-2)

A) Show that the vertical position that the ball hits the second building is given
by the expression:

sv = 80 tanθ – 64 m

B) With what velocity must the ball be thrown to strike the second building at a
height of 20 meters (above the ground) if the ball is thrown from a height of 35
meters ??

C) Using the velocity from part B above as the initial speed, what will be the
displacement AND velocity 1.5 seconds after the ball is thrown ??
