Eco-friendly & recyclable
Choosing the optimum material for your next project should
take account of the full lifetime of the material. This will
include construction, use, maintenance and disposal.
Materials which can be recycled easily and economically and
which do not require landfill disposal should be preferred.
Aluminium's formability, high strength-to-weight ratio,
corrosion resistance, and ease of recycling makes it the ideal
material for a wide range of building applications. It is almost
uniquely suited for harsh industrial and marine projects.
This brochure presents aluminium’s unique qualities.

benefits of aluminium for you.

Permalite purlins are ideal for severe industrial or marine environments

3
Material Specification
The extruded purlin shapes listed in Table 1 are all produced
in a recently developed structural aluminium alloy 6106-T6
which combines the properties of high strength with
excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion and is
particularly suited to marine structures and water reservoir
roofing applications.
Guaranteed minimum mechanical properties are:
Yield 210Mpa
Ultimate Tensile Strength 235Mpa
Elastic Modulus 69000Mpa
Should any members require subsequent bending for curved
structures then other tempers would be recommended.
Bolts and nuts etc. are recommended to be of corrosion
resistant materials such as aluminium alloy or stainless steel.
This combination will give the best results in environments in
which aluminium purlins are most suited.

DESIGN CRITERIA
Limit State Design
The recommended Load tables, 3 and 4, have been
calculated in accordance with AS/NZS 1664:1-1997, the
Aluminium Structures Standard for Limited State Design.
The limit state loads have been calculated using the
provisions for yielding and local flange and web buckling, as
well as overall buckling of the unstiffened flange and
interaction of shear and bending.
Clause 1.3 of AS/NZS 1664:1 on the increase of the capacity
factor for secondary matters, such as purlin and girts, for
wind and earthquake loads, has not been adopted in
deriving the limit state loads. The design engineer may use
personal judgement in increasing the limit state loads in
accordance with this clause where considered appropriate to
do so.
Allowable Stress Design
The recommended Load tables, 5 and 6, have been
calculated in accordance with AS/NZS 1664:2-1997, the
Aluminium Structures Standard for Allowable Stress Design.
The allowable loads have been calculated using the
provisions for yielding and local flange and web buckling, as
well as overall buckling of the unstiffened flange and
interaction of shear and bending.
Additional Structural Shapes
In addition to the standard purlin shapes there are many
other structural alloy geometric extrusions, mesh and plate
which can be used for other parts of the structure such as:-
Bridging channels or angles

4
Sag Rods
Trussed girders for main beams
Tubular shapes for columns
Surround framing for access openings
Stairways, railings, bracing anchor brackets etc.

Aluminium Roof Purlins

For both inwards and outwards loading, it has been assumed
that Permalite aluminium roofing is screw fastened at a
maximum of 254mm centres along each purlin or girt outer
flange and is an integral part of the system providing
torsional and diaphragm restraint. For both C and Z shapes,
the radius of gyration about the axis parallel to the web was
used to determine effective length for each span/bracing
combination.
Purlin systems without braces are not recommended except
for short spans as the bracing serves to both align the purlins
after installation and prevent twisting during application of
the roof cladding.

Aluminium Wall Girts

The purlin load tables may not be directly applicable to wall
girts as the method of attachment of the cladding and
twisting of the girt under the weight of the cladding needs
to be taken into consideration.
Any girt systems using these shaped must have at least one
row of bracing as for purlins. Sag rods alone are not
recommended, as they do not properly control twist under
wind forces.

Aluminium Purlin Size Range

The majority of the current standard extrusions used as
purlins and girts shown in Table 1 are closely related to the
traditional sizes of steel C and Z shapes and a similar code
numbering system is used e.g.C20025 is a 200mm deep C
shape 2.5mm thick. Other shapes are produced using
extrusion versatility to either omit the flange lips by using
thicker flanges, using bulb ends or with downturned lips.
Note:- These flange features are to absorb the high stresses
in the flange edges in this type of light framing construction.

Sections Available
The range of C sections shown in Table 2 are suitable for
constructions in which spans are simply supported. They can
also be used over two or more spans, if length is available, to
help reduce deflection. The main range of lipped Zeds

5
shown in Table 3 are designed to nest with themselves to
enable end lapping. This produces a structurally continuous
line of purlins or girts for multiple bay buildings which is
more economical and gives extra strength when lapped over
the support beams improving the load capacity. Zeds can
also be used over single or double spans in the same manner
as C sections and the load table shows the different
capacities for each of these arrangements. C sections can be
lapped, back-to-back or joined with a separate splicing piece
left behind the joint, which is not a ‘lapped’ joint. It is worth
evaluating both C and Z designs for each application to
determine the most economical solution.

Tolerances
Extrusion tolerances are in accordance with AS1866 and the
ADC Handbook and full tolerance charts are available from
Permalite Aluminium Limited. Normal extrusion length
tolerances are +10mm, - 0mm and this may need
consideration when ordering, being the reverse of steel
(most projects require+0mm, -5mm). Extrusions are available
up to a maximum length of 13.5 metres, shorter lengths cut
from stock bars would have a length tolerance of ± 2mm.

HOLE, CLEAT & FASTENING DETAILS
Permalite extruded purlins can be supplied Purlin shapes are also available unpunched
with punched elongated holes for fastening to if preferred for site drilling which is much
cleats. These holes are normally made to the easier than steel, however slotting for
Australian Institute of Steel Construction expansion of purlins is recommended as
recommended sizes and gauge lines. They are thermal movements of approximately

PURLIN SPLICING DETAILS SHEET
Lap Splicing Details
Three typical splicing methods are described in these data
pages. Some are more effective, or suit the structure more
than others and careful evaluation needs to be made, whilst
determining the size of the member from tables 3 or 4.

Method 1
Non Structural Stiffening Splice for
C Sections
This splicing improves the deflection
performance of single of double
span loading conditions and keeps
roofing screws in line. It does not
add strength. So only the span chart
for single or double span of Table 3
can be used.

Method 2
Structural Lap Splice for C Sections
This is a structural lap splice so the
lapped span of Table 3 can be
applied. however roofing screw lines
are staggered to pick up the
alternating lines of the purlins.

Method 3
Structural Lap Splice for Zed
Sections
This is the most effective splice as
the sections are designed to nest
into themselves so screwlines are
continuous. The lapped span tables
of Table 4 are used when this
method is adopted.

8
Bridging Details, Spacing and Lap Splicing Dimensions
Bridging or Bracing must be located in the positions shown
on the details below for full loading capacities to be
achieved and must laterally restrain each purlin or girt at the
point of intersection. All purlins. except the self draining
shapes Z17540 and Z29055, can be spliced at internal
supports by overlapping 20% of the span length as shown.

1.1 Permalite system profiles
Permalite offers three different solutions to provide a range of stylish,
economical and durable systems suitable for almost any cladding
applications.

Permalite V-Rib
The symmetry and 915mm cover width of this product
provide exceptional economy through faster fixing and
minimum wastage.
These factors are important on smaller projects and complex
roof and walls or where a striking design is required.

Permalite LT7
The versatility of this profile is due to its strength, water
carrying capacity, fixing economy and eave closure features.
It is widely used for roofing and can be reversed to provide a
bold wall effect.

Permalite Alspan
This profile was designed specifically to provide a wide
spanning capability and a distinctive appearance.
The large robust ribs and exceptional water carrying capacity
of this profile make it ideal for large high performance roofs
such as power stations and industrial or commercial buildings.
The profile is also used on walls where a strong visual effect is
required.
