meeting
by baijukurup on 16-10-2018

The following is the few ideas for discussion on the two new courses M.I.T.-
S.F.T proposing for the coming academic year .the detail syllabus work is in
progress. Both the courses are in post graduation level . The ideas scribble
down here is mainly intending for discussion / questions to be addressed
regarding the relevance of courses, the position of it in the present syllabus,
vision and overviews.

Vision

The web, video games, movies, TV – today’s world is an increasingly visual

one. The imagery we create has an immense impact on our culture and
personal development. As a professional visual communicator, filmmaker, a
collaborative technician or artist it’s crucial to understand the history,
purpose, and mechanisms of visual media. The perceptual experience of
seeing and representing it has vast significant meaning in the contemporary
world .there are diverse consent manufactured ,distributed to consume the
different meaning .so the maker/artist is facing many challenges to express
oneself in any particular medium .the understanding about the realm of
visual media has evolved extensively on digital platforms as a result of rapid
growth in the technology . The practise of any media at present is a mix of
traditional ,modern and new media experiences such as painting, sculpture,
music, theatre , cinema , gaming, sonic art, and the extensions of
crossover, transsmedia.therefor the present demand is not to explore deeper
in to the scope of traditional platform /media but develop an enquiry in to
rapidly developing multiple platform, because the present demand is more for
deeper involvement and experiencing the fiction/fictional elements .

By considering the above all enquires in to different new media and current
requirements of the industry as well as the status of the artistic expression
M.I.T-S.F.T is proposing two new courses by including new mode of
storytelling to accommodate the new digital environment in to the present
curriculum of cinematic story telling .the new courses will be enable our
present students to develop a deeper understanding of digital platforms .they
can even expand their imagination across multi disciplines . updating the
available infrastructure will be another benefit to the present students for their
new enquires in to multiple delivery platforms.

The proposed courses are

1-Edit , Vfx and new post production workflow

2-production in television and new media /transmedia

Overview

M.I.T-S.F. T has been training students in the area of cinematic story telling
for the last three years. the training varied from traditional classroom-based
learning to studios and workshops by eminent filmmakers and technician.
interactions with filmmakers and dignitaries across the media and production
is another curriculum activity. Creative thought and imagination are nurtured
through a multitude of pathways within the disciplines of cinema , digital
media and various trans media plat forms to celebrate diverse forms of
storytelling and abstraction .

The new courses will be engaging students in rigorous process of

experimentation, hands of practise of different applications to expand the
imagination and praxis .media lab to meet all the technical challenges along
with a Colorcorrection studio will be the new facilities added to M.I.T-S.F.T for
the new courses .with the introduction of the new courses m.i.t-s.f.t will
become one of the few academic spaces in India where cinema and
transmedia taught simultaneously .
1-Edit ,Vfx and new post production workflow

This course is a revamped course of existing M.S.C in Editing by adding vfx

and other new post production workflows. Since the advent of digital the role
of editing and editor has changed .the editors role as a technician and
collaborators have been altered to project associate and visual designer
.because the notion of mise-en-scéne the relationship between space and the
character become more imaginary. the contemporary moving image culture is
evolving to include a notion of space that has no physical, material or
logistical limitations. Virtual settings and animated elements enhance and
push the moving image into new terrains.

In this context, Visual Effects is the integration of live-action footage and

computer-generated imagery. To shoot them in the real world would be very
expensive, or simply impossible to capture on film. Visual effects using
Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) have become increasingly common in all
kinds of films, games, commercials, television,

This course introduces students to the fundamental skills used in the Visual
Effects (VFX) industry. Students learn basic compositing and how the VFX
field integrates computer graphics and 3D components with live action plates.
Visual Effects include comprehensive practical exercises which simulate
current industry pipelines. Students have access to experienced mentorship
for discussion and feedback. Along with the technical and aesthetical inputs
of editing editing this course also include colorcorrection and mastering

Software
1- Photoshop
2- Aftereffects
3- Adobe premiere
4- Fcp-x
5- Avid mediacomposer
6- Davinci resolve
7- 3ds maya
8- Nuke
9- Fusion, z brush
10- V-Ray. V-Ray is a popular rendering engine software used in graphics
& animation.
2-production in television and new media /transmedia

We have been witnessing rapid changes in the area of broadcasting and

telecasting for the past few years .advent of highspeed internet streaming
different delivery platforms challenged the conventional notions of telecasting
media .dearth of god content and method of delivery are the other hurdles
broadcasting and telecasting media facing at present .mostly now television
contents are split in to two sessions live, event based content and high end
dramas and documentaries on the other. The new deliver platforms are
capable to deliver all these on single platforms .the proposed course will be
designed to take up the new challenges in the area of content creation for
television and transmedia along with the technical inputs for the production
The course will be covering basics of broadcasting telecasting production ,ott
tv ,the role of different delivery platforms ,mode of delivery ,the production
technique of few of the prominent platforms

The course will also introduce different technology involved in VR ,AR,MR,XR

and 360 cinema
In this course students are introduced to the current technological landscape
and industry tools, with the goal of building the skills they’ll need to create
their very own narratives. students will work with 360 camera rigs, lighting,
spatialized sound, multiple post-production platforms, and directing actors
and voice-over talent.

Students have the opportunity to work with:

Nikon Key Mission 360 camera

Samsung Gear 360 camera
HTC Vive headset and hand-held controllers
Mettle Skybox Suite plug-in for Adobe Premiere and After Effects
Kodak Orbit 360 camera
Sennheiser Ambeo VR 3D microphone
Google Daydream View + Pixel

To support the core narrative curriculum, students gather industry insights

from demos by VR tech innovators, as well as guest lectures by content
producers across the geners such as documentary, music, games,
filmmaking, and beyond.
Footnote
Transmedia storytelling (also known as transmedia narrative or multiplatform storytelling)
is the technique of telling a single story or story experience across multiple platforms and
formats using current digital technologies, not to be confused with traditional cross-
platform media franchises, sequels, or adaptations.
Ott -over the topis term used to refer to content providers that distiribute streaming media
as a stand alone product directly to consumers over the internet bypassing
telecommunications ,multichanel televisions and broadcast television platforms that
traditionaly act as a controller or distributer of such content
VR is immersing people into a completely virtual environment ; AR is creating an overlay
of virtual content, but can’t interact with the environment; MR is a mixed of virtual reality
and the reality, it creates virtual objects that can interact with the actual environment. XR
(extended reality )brings all three Reality (AR, VR, MR) together under one term.
