INTRODUCTION

The word “stress” brings thoughts such as feeling or emotional depression or anxiety that
is a potentially life-threatening issue to individuals mind. It can be cause by four factor which is
the relationship, academic, environment, and personal. Every person has different kind of stress
based on their way of living or how they lived. Stress is the result of conflicting internal and
external pressures that causes strain and alter the effectiveness of individuals. According to the
Lazarus & Folkman model, stress is an outcome of a transaction or relationship between the
person and the environment. This model demonstrates that a person will experience stress when
the environmental stressors are perceived to be demanding and have exceeded the personal
resources present in order to cope with them.

The effects of stress made someone experience difficultly on handling situation. Students
can be unmotivated to study or even to perform inside the room. It can make them hard to focus
and concentrate to a room discussion. This can affect their grades and also their academic
success. It can also stop the mind of somebody to function well and to over think unto
something. Often, stress helps to bring out the best in the individual (Steven, 2010). However,
this is dependent on how the stress events are addressed or interpreted (Etim, Bassey, Ndep,
Ekpenyong & Otung, 2015). This is because, Etim et al. (2015) argued that every event has a
potential of being a stress or strength depending on how it is handled.

According to the publication on stress by the University of New York [Retrieved

February 14, 2019] buttresses the notion that, extreme levels of stress can hinder studies
effectiveness and lead to poor academic performance and attrition. It goes on to affirm that,
students who experienced stressful life events also reported worse health outcomes and reduced
quality of life. Undoubtedly, stress has become the number one reported impediment to academic
performance, as fellow students now report being stressed out than ever. The New York
University Publication continued its affirmation that, 55% of students claimed their biggest
stressor to be academic in nature. 6 in 10 college students report having felt so stressed they
couldn’t get their studies done on one or more occasions.

This study is intended to address the issues of the effects of students’ stress to their
academic success. Particularly it aims to identify the factors causing stress and its effects to
academic success. It is for comparison of findings of current study by Etssel and Owusu (2017)
entitled Causes of students’ stress, its effects on their academic success, and stress management
by students. It was also for develop some techniques or even making a monthly or yearly
program or activity that can reduce stress among students to improve or to build their academic
success.

It will serve as a reference material to the student, parent, schools, government, and for
those people who will be reading this, when considering stress reduction and management of
works. It is for everybody awareness about the students’ stress and its effects to academic
success.

Significance of the Study

This study is intended to know the factors causing stress and its effects to academic
success of students for/to develop new techniques or programs to help those person that was
involve. The findings of this study will be beneficial on the following:

Students. It will help them to realize the capacity of their body to handle a specific number of
works to reduce their stress. This will inform them that being stress can affect their academic
performances. It is also beneficial for them to discover techniques that will help them to
minimize the stress they will get through their lives.

Parents. This study will be beneficial to all the parents that having son/daughter that
experiencing stress. It is beneficial for them so that they can perform action quickly when they
notice that their child is stress. They will be inform that there are some factors that can make
their child feel stressed that can affect their child studies.

School. The school will be beneficial to this study wherein it will help them to discover and
create a program that can reduce the stress among students. By those techniques or programs
they can get a good feedback and outcome from other schools. This can reduced failed students.

Future Researcher. This study will help the future researcher in the sense that they can get an
idea on how to work on to same study they will conduct. It will serve as their guide to see if there
are some changes they will find out.

Theoretical Framework

The study is attached on the theory proposed by Selye’s which is the Systematic Stress
Theory. Selye’s define stress as “a state manifested by a syndrome which consists of all the
nonspecifically induced changes in a biologic system” and it was called GAS (General Adoption

Syndrome). There are three stages under this system. The first one is the Alarm stage, next is the
Resistance stage, and lastly the Exhaustion stage. The implication of Salye’s theory and its
construct to this study lies in the fact that it outlines the stages a healthcare provider would
undergo if stressed affects students academic success and as such serves as a guide to the authors
in the formulation of research questions for the study.

Statement of the Problem

This study is aim to investigate the factors causes stress and its effects to academic
success of student in Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High School.

Specifically it aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the different stressors among students;

1.1 Relationship;
1.2 Personal;
1.3 Environment;
1.4 Academic;

2. What are the effects of stress towards Academic Success of students?

Hypotheses

The researcher comes up with the following hypotheses:

1. Relationship, Personal, Environment, and Academic factors cause stress.

2. Stress directly affects Academic success of students.

Definition of Terms

Alter- is change or cause to change in character or composition, typically in a comparatively

small but significant way.

Anxiety- is your body's natural response to stress.

Buttresses- a projecting support of stone or brick built against a wall.

External Pressure- can be created three ways: From a vacuum inside a vessel and
atmospheric pressure outside.

Internal Pressure- is a measure of how the internal energy of a system changes when it expands
or contracts at constant temperature.

Life-Threatening- capable of causing death: potentially fatal a life-

threatening disease/condition.

Students Stress- refers to the emotional and physical changes or reactions on the students when
it comes to handling the academic activities.

Strain- is an acute or chronic soft tissue injury that occurs to a muscle, tendon, or both

Stressors- are something that causes a state of strain or tension.

Syndrome- is a group of symptoms which consistently occur together, or a condition

characterized by a set of associated symptoms.

METHODOLOGY

Methods and Techniques Used

The researcher will use a descriptive survey method. Descriptive research is used to
“describe” a situation, subject, behavior and phenomena that attempts to gather information and
analyze a particular subject. In descriptive survey method, the researchers collect information
through the use of a survey or interview (CIRT, 2018). It is concerned with how what or what
exists to some preceding event that has influenced or affected a present condition or event.

Population of the Study

Table 1 shows the number of target participants of the researcher. It is computed or given
by Raosoft.com with a margin of error of 5%, 90% of confidence level and a population size of
60.

Research Instrument

To gather all the data needed, the researcher used a standardized survey questionnaire
that was adopted in the “The Brief Job Stress Questionnaire English Version” and Students’
stress its effects on their academic success, and stress management by students’ research
questionnaires.” That was used by many researchers studied about students stress. The
questionnaire is composed of two (2) parts. First is about what makes students to be stressed and
the second part is concerned to the students’ health that will discussed if they are really stressed.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher will construct a letter request, noted and approved by the subject teacher,
to the principal of Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High School requesting to let the researcher
conduct the data gathering inside the school. In survey method research, the researchers will
administer a survey questionnaire. After the participants answer the questions, the researchers
will describe and interpret/analyze the responses given

DISCUSSION

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This part presents the summary of findings, conclusion and recommendation arrived at
based upon the results of this study.

Summary
The following are the findings of the study based on the data collected:
The result of the study in general showed that the most causes of stress among the sub factors
of Relationship factors are working with new people, followed by the troubles they encounter
to their boyfriend/ girlfriend. The increased class workload (Assignments) is the highest factors
from the sub factors of Academic factors that cause stress among students, followed by the lots
of group work. On Environment factors the number one stressors of the students is the lack of
computer no how to be followed by future worries. While on the other hand, the highest factor
that are stressors to the students is the change in sleeping habits’ that is under the Personal
factors as source of stress, followed by encountering new responsibility in life of students.
In general the number one sub factors that causes stress among students is the increased
workload, next is Working with new people. Then, many hours of study, procrastination, and
examinations are the number three highest sub factors.
In general, the result of the study showed that a stressed student feels sometimes very active,
angry, irritable, restless, depressed, and haven’t been able to sleep well. Also student’s feels
often extremely tired, exhausted, gloomy, and sad when they are stressed. Buttresses the notion
that, extreme levels of stress can hinder studies effectiveness and lead to poor academic
performance and attrition. It goes on to affirm that, students who experienced stressful life events
also reported worse health outcomes and reduced quality of life. (University of New York, 2019

Conclusions

On the basis of the findings of the study, the following conclusions were arrived at:
The more a person feels stress the more it affects their academic performances. Stress
directly affect the performances of a student’s depends on how they handle it. But the study
showed that there are different factors that caused students stress. Due to the causes having
stress of students and inevitable of it makes the student perform poor in the class. They feel
angry, irritable, restless, and sad and haven’t been able to sleep well that is why their body
doesn’t get the energy it needed.
Having a lot of class workload from assignments, activities, and quizzes is the reason also why
students didn’t pass it. It is because they feel stressed from those things and student will end up
failed. Students tend to fail a subject because of the subject itself. It may be because there are
workloads in assignment or in the activities that cannot handle the students anymore. (Yumba,
2008) examined perception on major source of academic stress among undergraduates of
Linkoping’s University in South Sweden. The general finding was that academic source of stress
with (3.26) mean score was found to be most stressful among the students. The main sources of
academic stress were course Sources of Academic Stress: A study of selected tertiary institutions
in Bhutan 7 overload and academic evaluation process. Personal, social and familial factors were
found to be least.

Recommendations

Based on the significant findings and conclusions of the study, the following are the
recommendations of the researchers:
1. Students must know the capacity of their body and also how to handle working on with
too many activities or group works. They must learn how to work under pressure and
maintain their feelings.
2. Students must know how to work productive when they stress. Because a stress is not
only had negative effect but also a positive. It is depends to how it is being handle.

16
DR. PABLITO V. MENDOZA SR. HIGH SCHOOL
Malamig, Bustos, Bulacan

3. Students must learn how to handle themselves in every situation that possible to happen,
so that when it comes they will able to conquer it.
4. Parents should perform action quickly to help their child handling their stress.
5. There should be a program or seminar that can join students to reduce their stress,
especially when they are graduating students.
6. School should give some time for the student to relax and to enjoy their daily living.
Because stress can affects the students’ performances inside the classroom.
7. Future researcher should undergo searching more deeply and studying this study.
8. All people should be aware on this kind of situation, so that they can mitigate having
stress and became more productive.

Journal

My experienced as a researcher for this study is not really easy. I was first chosen a topic
concerning to the industry I was immerse. It is very difficult to accomplish my study inside the
Hospital. There are so many hindrances that I was encounter. I printed many letters and I was
also printed out all survey questionnaires I was going to use. But, sadly I am not granted to
continue my research. Not because they don’t want it, but because my letter that I was send there
was been missing and I do not have so much time to pursue it. That is why I made this research
study. Honestly, I spend not enough time for the next study I was studying which is this study.
But I made sure that everything that written here was examined, organized, and analyzed by
myself. I do experience many things that are new for me because it was my first time that I study
a research without somebody else, but just myself. I shoulder all the expenses and I made all of
this one by one
