Learning Area: Science Year 4- Chemical Sciences:

Natural and processed materials have a range of
Strand/Topic from the Australian Curriculum physical properties that can influence their
use (ACSSU074)
Strand: Science Understanding
Year 5- Chemical Sciences:
Sub-Strand: Chemical Sciences Solids, liquids and gases have different observable
properties and behave in different ways (ACSSU077)
Topic:
Changes to materials can be reversible or
irreversible (ACSSU095)

General Capabilities
Literacy Numeracy ICT Critical and Ethical behaviour Personal and Intercultural
competence creative thinking Social understanding
competence
Lesson Objectives:

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

 Perform a chemical reaction, while enabling the use of the ICT tool ‘Movavi Clips’.
 Explain with accuracy what occurs during a given chemical reaction/experiment

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

- All iPads charges and easily accessible in
classroom - Groups allow for lower ability students to be
- ‘Seesaw’ classroom set up aided via a partnership.
- ‘Movavi Clips’ app downloaded onto iPads
- Lesson Websites created, and all information, links - Teacher’s constantly walking around room and
and resources added observing groups, readily available to assist if
- ‘Match up cards’ ready for use necessary

LESSON DELIVERY
Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:

1. Students to sit on the mat, ready to start new lesson

2. Teacher/s to prompt for prior-knowledge:

- “Who remembers what possibilities could occur when mixing two
substances together?”
- A: Heat produced, expansion/ shrink, colour change etc.

3. Teacher/s to introduce lesson task:

- “Today, in groups, you will be experimenting with these possible
outcomes when mixing substances. While the experiment is
ongoing you will be using the iPads and the ‘Movavi Clips’ app to
record and edit video footage of your experiment. I will then ask
you to record audio over the top of the video footage describing
what you can see occurring. Resources and informational links
will be provided to help with this audio aspect of the activity”

4. Teacher/s to demonstrate lesson task:

- One Teacher to be demonstrating the use of the ‘Movavi Clips’ > ‘Movavi Clips’ App
app and to be recording the experiment occurring.
 This iPad will be linked to the white-board, so students will be
able to see how the app is used.
- Another teacher to be demonstrating one of the experiments at
the front of the room. Students remains seated on mat, regardless
of proximity to the demonstration of the experiment as they will be
able to watch through the iPad on the white-board.
- Another teacher to be explaining both the instructions of the
experiment and use of the app.

5. Formation of groups
- Teacher/s to hand out one ‘Match up card’ to each student, > ‘Match up cards’
students are then to find their partner with the matching card. This
is their group for the experiment.
- Teacher/s to instruct “Once finding your partner, collect ONE iPad > Instruction Slips &
and ONE instruction slip for your choice of experiment and find a iPads
space in the room”

Lesson Steps:

1. In groups students are to have one member perform the experiment

while another record in the iPad. Students are to follow the step by
step instructions given on their instruction slip to complete the
experiment.
- Teacher/s circling classroom and observing students

2. Once video footage is created, students are to use the QR codes

provided on the instruction slip to receive information on the reaction
that occurred in their experiment. They then use this information to
create an audio recording which is put over the top of the existing
audio footage, all completed onto the ‘Movavi Clips’ app.
- Teacher/s circling classroom and observing students

2

3. Students are to submit final product on ‘Seesaw’ iPad app, return

iPads and other resources and the sit down on the mat > ‘Seesaw’ App
- Teacher/s prompt: “Once your video has been submitted please
return all items to the front and sit quietly on the mat”

Lesson Closure:

1. Teacher/s to showcase 2-3 video creations form selected groups on

the whiteboard. Teacher/s to show groups of different experiments so
all students can become familiar with all other experiments that were
completed.

2. Teacher’s to introduce lesson reflection task of completing a ‘Quizlet’ > ‘Quizlet Live’ App
and to display QR code for the activity on the board, readily available
for students to scan. The teacher/s will also be handing out one iPad
to each student.

3. Students enter ‘Quizlet’ by entering the code provided to them on the

board. They then move into their designated groups shown on the
whiteboard.

4. When the quiz starts the first question appears on all of the student’s
devices in the group, and a portion of the answers from the entire
quiz. Students then need to communicate with each other to work out
who in the team has the right answer on their screen. It encourages
accuracy over speed as if students get the question wrong, they have
to start again from the beginning. It helps consolidate their knowledge
of the content as they get live feedback. It also activates and
enhances their interpersonal skills as they have to communicate with
their teammates for every question.

5. Students complete quiz and then return to their original seats.

Teacher ends class with small discussion to summarise the questions
of the quiz.

Assessment:

1. Teacher to observe students performing experiments with accuracy

2. Teacher to ensure all students have submitted a product that contains

video and audio/text recordings about the experiments to the
‘Seesaw’ app.
