International Terrorism is one of the most important issues faced by the contemporary

There is urgent need to fight it at its foundation level. So, its sources are needed to be
addressed. Since, religious terrorism is the most important type of terrorism. So, its
need to be addressed firstly.

Islamic terrorism which constitutes 74% of terrorism as per the Global Terrorism
Index, 2016, its sources based on Quran must be given International Attention.
Several Surahs and verses e.g. Surah 9:5 must be given attention.

Christian terrorism, Buddhist Terrorism and other types of terrorism are also need to
be addressed.

Muslims need to take only good things from Quran which are peaceful in nature.

Terrorism and it’s Sources

Amit Kumar Singh, Law Student, Bareilly College, Bareilly, Mobile: +919643120610

Terrorism means ‘The unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against
civilians, in the pursuit of political aims’.

Origin of Terrorism:

Late 18th century (in reference to the rule of the Jacobin faction during the period of
the French Revolution known as the Terror): from French terrorisme, from
Latin terror.

Religious Terrorism:
The most important form of Terrorism nowadays is religious terrorism.

Islamic Terrorism:
Most important example of Islamic terrorism is the Islamic State. They claim to be
doing what they do in the name of Allah but in the religion of Islam, Allah views all
religions as equal and he believes in peace, which these groups defiantly do not
believe. Their attacks defy their god and religion.

In 2015, four Islamic extremist groups were responsible for 74% of all deaths from
terrorism: ISIS, Boko Haram, the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, according to the Global
Terrorism Index 2016.

One ideology that plays a role in terrorism by using the name of Islam, is Wahabism.
Wahabism and its allies including Salafism supports war against anyone and
everyone who is not like them. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, al-
Qaeda, Al-Shabaab, Boko Haram, Indonesian Mujahedeen Council, Taliban, Sipah
Sahaba, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Hizbul Mujahideen follow intolerant Wahabi or
Salafi ideology which is opposed by other Muslims. In India, Wahabism was spread

in the name of Deobandi movement, which was opposed by more tolerant Sufi
oriented Indian Muslims.

Donald Holbrook, a Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and
Political Violence, analyzes a sample of 30 works by jihadist propagandists and finds
several passages of the Quran exploited and distorted to suit the objectives of violent
jihad. An-Nisa (4:74–75) is quoted most frequently; other popular passages are At-
Taubah (9:13–15, 38–39, 111) and Al-Baqarah (2:190–191, 216) and Al-Tawbah

Suarh 2:190:

Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed.
Allah does not like transgressors.

Surah 2:191:

And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they
have expelled you, and fitnah is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-
Masjid al- Haram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them.
Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.

Surah 2:216:

Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you. But perhaps you
hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for
you. And Allah Knows, while you know not.

Surah 4:74:

So let those fight in the cause of Allah who sell the life of this world for the
Hereafter. And he who fights in the cause of Allah and is killed or achieves
victory - We will bestow upon him a great reward.

Surah 4:75:

And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and
[for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, "Our Lord, take
us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a
protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?"

Surah 9:5:

And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you
find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every
place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let
them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Surah 9:13:

Would you not fight a people who broke their oaths and determined to expel the
Messenger, and they had begun [the attack upon] you the first time? Do you fear
them? But Allah has more right that you should fear Him, if you are [truly]

Surah 9:15:

And remove the fury in the believers' hearts. And Allah turns in forgiveness to
whom He wills; and Allah is Knowing and Wise.

Surah 9:38:

O you who have believed, what is [the matter] with you that, when you are told
to go forth in the cause of Allah, you adhere heavily to the earth? Are you
satisfied with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But what is the
enjoyment of worldly life compared to the Hereafter except a [very] little.

Surah 9:39:

If you do not go forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment and will
replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him at all. And Allah is
over all things competent.

Surah 9:111:

Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties
[in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah,
so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah
and the Gospel and the Qur'an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah? So
rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the
great attainment.

Christian Terrorism:

Anti-balaka groups destroyed almost all mosques in the Central African Republic
unrest. In 2014, Amnesty International reported several massacres committed by
the Anti-balaka against Muslim civilians, forcing thousands of Muslims to flee the
country. Other sources report incidents of Muslims being cannibalized.

The National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), is a rebel group that seeks the
secession of Tripura, North-East India, and is a proscribed terrorist organization in
India. Group activities have been described as Christian terrorists engaging in
terrorist violence motivated by their Christian beliefs.

The Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) is also a Christian Naga

nationalist militant group operating in North India. The main aim of the organization
is to establish a sovereign Christian state, ‘Nagalim’ unifying all the areas inhabited
by the Naga people in Northeast India and Burma. The organization's slogan is
‘Nagaland for Christ’. It’s manifesto is based on the principle of Socialism for
economic development and a Baptist Christian religious outlook.

Contemporary American Christian terrorism can be motivated by a violent desire to
implement a Reconstructionist or Dominionist ideology. Dominion Theology insists
that Christians are called by God to (re)build society on Christian values to subjugate
the earth and establish dominion over all things, as a prerequisite for the second
coming of Christ. Political violence motivated by dominion theology is a violent
extension of the desire to impose a select version of Christianity on other Christians,
as well as on non-Christians.

Buddhist Terrorism:
In Southeast Asia, Thailand has had several prominent virulent Buddhist monastic
calls for violence. In the 1970s, nationalist Buddhist monks like ‘Phra Kittiwuttho’
argued that killing Communists did not violate any of the Buddhist precepts.

Ashokavadana mentions two incidents of Ashoka turning towards violence after

adopting Buddhism. In one instance, a non-Buddhist in Pundravardhana drew a
picture showing the Buddha bowing at the feet of Nirgrantha Jnatiputra (identified
with Mahavira, the founder of Jainism). On complaint from a Buddhist devotee,
Ashoka issued an order to arrest him, and subsequently, another order to kill all
the Ajivikas in Pundravardhana. Around 18,000 followers of the Ajivika sect were
executed as a result of this order. Sometime later, another Nirgrantha follower
in Pataliputra drew a similar picture. Ashoka burnt him and his entire family alive in
their house. According to K.T.S. Sarao and Benimadhab Barua, stories of
persecutions of rival sects by Ashoka appear to be a clear fabrication arising out of
sectarian propaganda.

Muslims need to accept only good things mentioned in Quran, not the Verses which
are used by Jihadist Propagandist to spread terror.
International Community needs to isolate the Nations which support the Terrorism
globally e.g. Pakistan as evident by the research.
