Existen varios modelos que explican la autorregulación. Como lo son las teorías
que presentaron Winne (1996,1997) el cual se basa en lo cognoscitivo, el de Boekaerts
(1999; Boekaerts & Niemivirta, 2000) que tiene en cuenta las metas establecidas por los
alumnos y el de Zimmerman (2000) que parte de la teoría socio-cognitivo. Aunque los 3
presentan puntos en común como lo es la volición, el que se va a presentar en este resumen
es el modelo de Zimmerman al ser más conocido, presentando una valoración crítica y
amplia de dicha teoría.
