Chapter 3

The Extent Effects of Cigarette Smoking to Criminology Students of


University Of Saint Anthony

This chapter give emphasis to the presentation, analysis and interpretation of


gathered data from the selected criminology students focuses on The Extent Effects of
Cigarette Smoking to Criminology Students of University of Saint Anthony. A
questionnaire was given as the data gathering instrument to the selected criminology
students of University of Saint Anthony.

Respondent Profile

Age. Shown in Table 1 is the age dissemination of the respondents. The selected
respondents aged from eighteen (18) to twenty (20) years old. As the table shows, the
highest bracket is twenty (20) with 3 respondents and age eighteen (18) and nineteen
(19) with one respondent each.

Gender. Table 2 shows that the five (5) randomly selected respondents were all
male.

(3) 3rd Year students from the Criminology Department.

Questionnaire

The sets of questionnaire were constructed by the researchers, enhanced and


checked by our research teacher so as to find answer to all the questions that the study
wants to find out.

1. What age did you start smoking?

Respondents #1 I started smoking at the age of 18


Respondents #2 I’ve been exposed to smoking at the age
of 15.
Respondents #3 I was 16 years old.
Respondents #4 I was 14 when I started smoking
Respondents #5 I smoke my first cigarette at the age of
18

The data gathered shows that the respondents started smoking in their early
teenager years, ranging from fourteen (14) the youngest and eighteen (18) the eldest
smoking age from the selected respondents.

2. What forces you or what are the reasons why you start smoking?

Respondent #1 Influence by my friends and it eases my


anxiety, sometimes it helps me to think
clearly and also my stress reliever
Respondent #2 I was curious
Respondent #3 Mostly because of the influence of my
friends
Respondent #4 The reason why I start smoking is because
of curiosity. I want to know the feeling or
sensation that I can get from smoking.

Respondent #5 The main reason why I start smoking is


mainly due to stress.

The data indicates that the overall reasons why they smoke are due to influence

of friends and it can also indicate as peer pressure. Another respondent states that the

reason why they smoke is connected to stress it could be stress from school. One more

factor says he got curious about the effect and sensation when smoking.

3. Do you smoke every day or occasionally only? How many sticks can you
consume in a day?

Respondents #1 I only smoke occasionally and 2-3 sticks a


day
Respondents #2 I smoke once a day.
Respondents #3 I smoke occasionally and 1 up to 2 sticks
a day
Respondents #4 I only smoke occasionally. I can consume
about 3 sticks in a day.
Respondents #5 In a day I can finish 3 sticks and also on
occasionally.
According to the data gathered the maximum number of sticks being consume is
three (3). Majority of the respondents smokes occasionally and can finish 2 sticks on
minimum per a day. Every respondents smoke every day with at least 2 sticks of
cigarette.

4. For a college and a criminology student you probably know the effects of

smoking. Aren’t you afraid of the adverse effects of smoking?

Respondent #1 Of course I am scared. There’s a lot of

illness and disease that can cause by

smoking to our system

Respondent #2 Honestly, no

Respondent #3 I’m afraid of the consequences that

smoking can cause, of course.

Respondent #4 Of course I’m afraid of what I can get

from smoking and also I’m completely

aware of the consequences from smoking

Respondent #5 I’m aware of the consequences but nope

I’m not afraid.

The data above indicates that the majority of the students know and aware of

the effects and also the consequences of smoking. The selected respondent states that

they are knowledgeable in smoking, while the other respondent also says that they are

aware and doesn’t care about the effects.

5. Do you or not plan to stop smoking? Why?

Respondent #1 I plan to stop it nowadays as I start

decreasing the cigarette that I intake.

Respondent #2 Yes. I do plan to quit this year

Respondent #3 I’m already quitting smoking by decreasing

the sticks I take

Respondent #4 I’m going to stop right now.

Respondent #5 I am planning to stop smoking this year

The data gathered implies that they’re already planning to stop smoking. The

overall of the students are aware about the consequences that a smoking brings. One

of the vital factors why they will quit is because of the disease that comes along with

smoking.
