1. Blade design and performance testing of a small wind turbine rotor for low wind
speed applications
Results : Turbine performing best at 18 degree pitch angle. Peak power coefficient
attained by the 2-bladed rotor design at 6 m/s wind speed was 0.29.
Results : P = ½ ρAV3
blades may not necessarily result in higher CP on the other hand; a good
combination of the blade parameters with lower chord width and fewer
numbers of blades can result in higher CP. In the present case, a blade with
30mm chord at the tip and 500 mm chord at the root with 4 blades. and with
twist varying from 8 degree at the tip to 32 degree at the root gives a CP of
0.43, which is the best for the rated wind speed and the diameter of the rotor.

Results : Mean wind speeds of 4 ms-1 are available over 50% of Sudan, which suited
for water lifting and intermittent power requirements, while there is one
region in the eastern part of Sudan that has a wind speed of 6 ms-1, which
is suitable for power production. The data presented in this paper can be

5. Design of a low Reynolds number airfoil for small horizontal axis wind turbines
Young-Ho Leeb
Results : The airfoil showed good lift characteristics at low Reynolds numbers and at an
angle of attack as high as 14. The flat-back trailing edge of the AF300 airfoil has
trailing edge of the airfoil would require lighter and less expensive
materials for the blades ,decreasing the inertia and improving start-up and
SITE SELECTION
The viability of a windmill is greatly affected by its location. The site must have sufficient wind
power to move the windmill and also be away from obstructions that might cause turbulence.
The speed of wind for a given location is not constant and thus the climatic condition of the site
should be examined for over on a year and recorded on a wind map which is then used to analyze
To avoid distractions, most windmills are located on hilly areas or the rigs are tall enough to
ensure the rotor is far above the obstacles. The site of our windmill had been identified and there
was no need for selection of another site. However we did an analysis on the site to determine its
The winds speed of Nairobi varies from 3m/s to 4m/s and these were the maximum and
minimum wind speeds recorded from January to December in the year 2013, hence the
site is suitable.
The location of the windmill is strategically away from tall buildings and trees and
It is the cheapest source of energy. This is because it does not require importation and it is
readily available.
