About Ducom
Founded in 1978, Ducom Instruments has led the way in designing and manufacturing advanced
materials testing instruments with a specialization in tribology. Applying cutting-edge technology
and strong design principles to its products, Ducom focusses on providing customers with an
excellent ownership experience starting with ease of use and maintenance.

Our locations in the United States, Netherlands and in India each have an in-house Research &
Development initiative coupled with development partnerships with world renowned
institutions. As a result, Ducom holds several proprietary technologies, copyrights and patents
with additional filings every year. Many of these technologies are applied to our instruments, and
work in the background so users can enjoy better results and user experiences.

Our instruments are operational all over the world. Research labs working on cutting edge
technology development which requires advanced and highly configurable test systems to
standardized quality control requirements which rely on highly repeatable systems to accurately
monitor product quality test instruments by Ducom.

Basic Instrument
Ducom Air Jet Erosion Tester (see Fig.1) is used to determine the erosion
weight loss of materials, and investigate erosion resistant behavior of
components used in energy and transportation industries. Within these
industries the erosion tester has shown a profound influence in improving
the energy efficiency.
Ducom Air Jet Erosion Tester can reproduce and control a wide range of
operational parameters like environment temperature: RT to 1000 °C (see
Fig. 2), solid particle velocity: 30 to 200 m/s, particle flow rate: 2 to 300
g/min, and particle angle of impact: 10 to 90 degrees. Most of these
parameters represent the real operating conditions in industries.
Ducom Air Jet Erosion tester also complies with the test standards: ASTM
G76 and G211-14.

Functional Features
• High temperature control: The furnace is used to heat the samples and the air carrying the
particles is heated by a joule heating teechnique. A maximum temperature of 1000 °C
(specimens and air carrying the particles) can be achieved.

• High particle flow rate: Particle flow rate is controlled by a motor, gear head and belt assembly
connected to below a hopper. High flow rate of particles up to 300 g/min can be achieved by
using a high speed motor.

Principle of Operation
As shown in Figure 3, the Ducom Air Jet Erosion tester is comprised of compressed air flow control
unit, power feeder unit (hopper, blower, motor-gear system, mixing chamber, nozzle),
temperature control unit (air heater, furnace for specimen heater), sample mounting and
powder collection unit (tray and exhaust air filter).
Compressed air from the pneumatic air control unit and solid particles from the feeder unit are
mixed in the mixing chamber. Compressed air carries the solid particles in the steel tube and it
exits via the nozzle connected to the tube. The difference in the diameter of the tube (larger) and
nozzle (smaller) creates an energy flux of particles that impact the specimen. The length of the
tube is sufficient to avoid any turbulence in the flow. Impact velocity of the particles is varied by
changing the compressed air pressure that carries the solid particles. The discharge rate of the
particles is controlled by speed of the motor in the powder feeder unit.

• High Temperature Module (room temperature to 600, 800 and 1000 °C)
• Motorized sample stage for impingement angle setting
• High particle flow rate module ( up to 300 g/min)

User Convenience
• Safety: A dust preventive chamber with a hot air exhaust system ensure safe working
conditions. Also, there is a sufficient insulation to avoid direct exposure to high temperature.

• Easy of operation: It is easy to replace the nozzle and the samples after the test. Pre-
programmed test parameters (as erodent velocity, erodent feed rate, specimen temperature,
test duration and angle of impingement) to conduct repetitive set of experiments. The
pneumatic control system ensures automatic open and closure of the heat furnace.

• Modular system: The air jet erosion tester can be upgraded with the optionals (as mentioned
above) at any time after the purchase.

Instrument control and Data acquisition

Electronic controller is positioned at the top of the structure. It controls the erodent discharge, air
flow and duration of the test in ambient temperature. Erodent discharge is controlled by the
frequency of motor and is displayed in the front panel. Air jet pressure is for setting the erodent
velocity, the pressure is set by a turning the air regulator till the required pressure is read on gauge.
A timer module is used to set test duration and is displayed in minute and seconds.

In case of high temperature module, a furnace is integrated with the structure of the instrument.
This furnace can be lifted up by use pneumatic actuators at the time of high temperature test to be
conducted. In this module controller will have a control and display of temperature. Sample
temperature is displayed by use of K type thermocouple.
