CHAPTER I
Public water systems must deliver safe and reliable potable water to their customers 24
hours a day, 365 days a year. If the source of water becomes contaminated, consumers can get
seriously ill which results to another problem. Fortunately, public water systems take many
alterations and few extra steps to make sure water travelling through the pipes is safe. One of the

infrequently examine the complete system. Collecting extra samples helps verify whether or
not an actual downside exists. If the work detects bacteria in any of the extra samples, the initial
Water is also treated otherwise in numerous communities looking on the standard of the
water that enters the treatment plant. Typically, surface water needs a lot of treatment and
filtration than spring water as a result of lakes, rivers, and streams contain a lot of sediment and
In this regards, the researcher will conducted a study to make some innovations using
White Lead Tree (Leucaena galuca L.) Alkaloid seed extracts common called “ipil-ipil” within
the Philippines, to treat Coliform contaminated cistern reservoirs in Biasong, Poblacion 1, Carcar
City,Cebu.
The current study will study the effectiveness of different concentrations of the White

Microorganisms are found in nearly each natural component on the earth. The lives of
humans, plants and animals are all as such joined to the microbes that regularly recycle key
nutrients like Carbon and chemical element, degrade organic matter and form our day to day
existence.
Community- those who are living near the reservoir or those areas where the water from the
reservoir travels to, their supply of water will be of clean and essential, which in this case will
deficit the number of sanitary issues and also maintains healthy water for their supply.
Children- kids and young organisms take into account animals; have low immune system which
is a part risky when their water supply is contaminated with coliform. This study will help
diminish these coliforms to maintain a clean and potable water healthy enough for drinking.
Students- this study will add information to students. The data that will be gathered can help
students have an area of understanding regarding a water’s safety and help them learn that “ipil-
ipil” is not just a plant that is rampant at any place but can also be a very helpful substitute for
chlorine.
Resort Owners, Sanitary Office, and Government- this study will redound to the betterment
of a clean environment without using harmful substitutes for cleaning water systems like tanks,
pools, and etc instead, they will be aware for the potential organic help of this study.
E. SCOPES AND LIMITATIONS
This study will focus the effect of the White Lead Tree (Leucaena galuca L) Alkaloid
seed extract towards the coliform contaminated water of Sitio Biasong, Poblacion 1, Carcar City,
Cebu only. This study will be focusing on the microbial ability of the said plant in different
concentrations. This is will be limited only to the said purpose of the study. No locals and
animals will be harmed of this experiment. Only one location and water tank will be used as
source of water sample and that is from Sitio Biasong, Poblacion 1, Carcar City, Cebu. This
research is all about the potential use of “ipil-ipil” as a substitute for bleach and other harmful
chemicals to clean contaminated water and it will be stated here about the results and how it will
To further understand the study made by the researcher, the following terms are defined
Coliforms- are a broad class of bacteria found in our environment, including the feces of man
and other warm-blooded animals. The presence of coliform bacteria in drinking water may

and certain algae. Microbiology subdivided into divisions including bacteriology, virology,

White Lead Tree (Leucaena glauca) - The flower heads are round, white, 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) in
diameter puffballs of numerous white stamens with hairy, pale yellow anthers. The flowers are
followed by clusters of linear, up to 7 inch (18 cm) long, flat, thin, drooping, green drying to
papery brown bean pods with a bead necklace-like row of seed bumps. The seeds are flat, oval,
and a rich glossy brown color. The leaves are bipinnately compound with small, green, narrowly
oblong, point-tipped leaflets. The branches have brown, corky pores and are thorn less, hairy
when young, and brown and hairless when old. (Hawaiian Plants and Tropical Flowers, February

RESEARCH DESIGN
The research design that will be used in this study is experimental design. The researcher
will experiment with the White Lead Alkaloid Seed Extract towards the water sample that will
collected from the water tank reservoir located in Sitio Biasong, Poblacion 1, Carcar Ciy, Cebu.
METHODOLOGY
A. Gathering of Materials
The researcher will gather 100mL pure Alkaloid Seed Extract from White Lead Tree,
1000mL beaker, electric weighing scale, stirrer, 100mL hexane, bleach, hot plate, 200mL worth
of water sample, 10 3m petri film, chromatography paper, test tubes, marker, 100mL Isopropyl
Alcohol (70% concentration), test tube racks, filter papers, mortar and pestle, and
chromatography papers.
For Proper Protective Equipment, the researcher will prepare a mask, pair of gloves, lab
B. Collection of Materials
The researcher will first sanitize the equipments using 10% bleach and 90% water in the
hot plate. Then, the researcher will collect a water sample using the beaker at Sitio Biasong,
Poblacion 1, Carcar City, Cebu. After, the researcher will collect about 100 White Lead Tree at
The researcher will pound the seeds until it will yield an extract with the amount of
100mL. Then, the researcher, using the different concentrations, will get the ratio of the amount
of water to the amount of extract using the test tube. The researcher will wait for 2 hours and
using the dropper will get 1mL of concentration and put it in the 3m petri film. The observation
period will last 36 hours. Then the researcher will record her observation.

The result from the reaction of the Coliform from the contaminated water source to the
different concentrations of applied White Lead Tree (Leucaena galuca L) Alkaloid seed extract
will be statistically analyzed. To know if there is a significant difference between the microbial
