1.

Intent

This document outlines the procedure for tagging Equipment, Speciality Items, Valves and
Pipelines.
This procedure serves to control the identification of systems and components by using the
Kraftwerk-Kennzeichen-System of Identification, hereafter referred to as KKS tagging system.
This system provides a means to identify plant facilities, equipment, piping, or any other plant
components as defined within the attachments to this procedure.
The fields that make up for an equipment tag are:
- Plant Code
- System Code
- System Numbering
- Device Type Code
- Device Number
- Component Code
The identification codes to be used and the associated text explanations are specified within
this KKS Tagging Procedure.
Should it become necessary to add or modify certain identification codes in the course of the
project, same shall be done.
Gaps in the Device Number for each combination of Unit Code, System Code, System
Numbering Code, Device Type Code, and Component Code are acceptable, but should be
avoided.
The sequential increment of numbers used as tag number shall be from south to north and
from west to east and from the lower elevations to higher elevations.
2. Type of Code and Breakdown Levels

In consideration of the various requirements placed on the identification of plants, sections of

plants and items of equipment in power stations, KKS has three different types of code:

- Process-related code

Process-related identification of systems and items of equipment according to their functions

in various engineering disciplines.

- Point of installation code

Identification of points of installation of electrical and control and instrumentation equipment

in installation units (e.g. in cabinets, panels, consoles).

3. Process-Related Identification

Process-related identification of systems and items of equipment according to their functions

in various engineering disciplines.

3.1 Plant Code (F0)

A single-digit plant code is used to designate a specific generating plant in databases. The
generating plant code allows for the differentiation of equipment in a database:

3.2 System Code (F1 F2 F3)

System Classification is the classification of systems and plants as per KKS Key and forms the
first part of System code. It is also termed as Function Key.

Coding letters and designations of F1 F2 F3 in System classification is as follows:

A Grid and distribution systems

B Power transmission and auxiliary power supply

C Instrumentation and control equipment

D Instrumentation and control equipment (for use only when the function keys CM to CT
are insufficient for the identification)

E Conventional fuel supply and residues disposal

F Handling of nuclear equipment

G Water supply and disposal

H Conventional heat generation

J Nuclear heat generation

K Nuclear auxiliary systems

L Water, steam, gas cycles

M Main machine sets

N Process energy supply for external users (e.g. district heating)

P Cooling water systems

Q Auxiliary systems
R Gas generation & treatment

S Ancillary systems

T Not Used

U Structures

V Civil work and Construction work

W Systems for regenerative-energies

X Heavy machinery

Y Not Used

Z Plant common

See Table 1 for the complete range of applicable system codes.

3.3 System Numbering (FN)

System Numbering is numbering subdivision of systems and plants into subsystems and
sections of plants. It forms the second part of System code. Numbering starts a new when one
of the preceding code elements changes. Redundant zeros must be written.

Following rules must be applied to the system numbering in FN:

In process-related identification the direction of flow takes priority over local conventions for
orientation. For example, combinations with numbering conventions according to direction of
flow and local features give rise to conflicts at intersections. e.g. of parallel pipe trains.

The direction of numbering of standardized identification conventions for plants may only be
established in accordance with non-project-specific considerations. (Superposition of
directions of numbering according to project-specific and local considerations usually destroys
the standardized identification convention.)

Fn numbering is governed by the following principles:

Numbering starts a new when one of the preceding code elements changes.

Numbering is grouping (e.g.10, 20, 30 … or 01, 02, 03, …).

Numbering need not be continuous. (i.e. sequence of 05, 10, 17, 55, etc. shall be
acceptable)

The direction of numbering coincides as a rule with that of fluid flow.

Fn numbering is governed by a defined direction of view (e.g. from plant South to north,
from plant west to east)

The Boundry of piping division in System Code & numbering is as follows:

In the case of a drain pipe, the System Code of the upstream side is used up to the
terminal point

In the case of vent pipe, the initial System Code is used up to the air release point.

In the case of branch line leading to another subsystem, the System Code of the
equipment downstream of the branch point is used.

In the case of a connection from another subsystem, the System Code of the upstream
equipment is used.

In the case of connections to a common supply, the System Code of the connected
equipment is used for the pipe.

3.4 Equipment Unit Classification (A1 A2)

Equipment identification code is classification of mechanical, electrical and control and

instrumentation equipments as per KKS Key. It forms the first part of Equipment unit code.

See Table 3 for equipment unit classification codes.

3.5 Equipment unit numbering (AN)

Equipment unit numbering is numbering of the mechanical, electrical and control and
instrumentation equipments and forms the second part of Equipment unit code.

Equipment numbering will be single stepped as 001, 002…999 and according to numbering of
piping, valve and measuring circuit.

AN numbering is governed by the following principles:

The terminals of piping are governed by changes in process and design data and
responsibility for supply. In flow terminals are made apparent by:

o Change of the design pressure, temperature, material, pipe size, pipe thickness.

o Change of the treatment of pipe surface.

o Large items or equipment

o Pipe branches and joints and attachment points and Division of shares
Main pipe, instrument pipe, drain pipe and vent pipe are identified by the 1st no of
equipment unit number.

The first number for main pipe, instrument pipe, drain and vent will be based on following
philosophy:

o Main pipe – 0 to 2

o Instrument pipe – 3

o Drain pipe – 4

o Vent pipe - 5

o Safety Valve pipe - 19

See Table – 5 for numbering of valves and Instruments.

3.6 Additional code

Additional code is the third part of Equipment unit code and is used for the numbering of
power plant as per the following:

Pilot valves and overpressure protection equipment

Multiple supplies for electric loads

Measuring circuits which share one sensor

The additional code will be prefixed by symbol ‘-‘and is mainly related to identification of
electrical parts of equipments.

3.7 Conclusion

KKS plant tagging procedure is thus a very useful system for numbering the equipment in a
plant
