1. What is a quadric cycle chain? Explain all the inversions of it and applications.

2. A grass hopper straight line mechanisms gets its motion from a crank OA. The end
A of the crank in joined to a long rod PQ such that Q A is 6cm. The end Q is
further joined to along vertical link O1 Q, 24 Cm long moving with centre O1 . The
length of rod PQ is also 24 Cm and its end P describes an approximate vertical
straight line. Determine the radius of crank OA. Find also the maximum deviation
of P from the vertical straight line in a travel of 6 Cm on each side of its mean
position. [16]

3. Explain the Klein construction for finding the velocity and acceleration in the fol-
lowing mechanisms.

(a) Single slider crank chain


(b) Four bar chain. [8+8]

4. In the circuit bracket mechanisms represented in Figure 4 the point P moves in a


vertical straight line. In the configuration O4 B is vertical .If the angular velocity
and angular acceleration of link Q4 A is 45 rad/sec and 300 rad/sec2 respectively,
both in clockwise sense, Determine the velocity and acceleration of point P. [16]

5. A Hooke’s joint connects a shaft running at a uniform speed of 1000 rpm to a
second shaft. The angle between their axes is 15 degrees. Find the velocity and
acceleration of the driven shaft at the instant when the fork of the driving shaft
has turned through an angle of 100 from the plane containing the shaft axes.
At what other positions of the driving shaft during a revolution, the angular velocity
of the driven shafts be the same as that arrived above? [16]

6. A cam rotating at 150 R.P.M. operates a reciprocating roller follower of radius 2.5
cm. The follower axis is offset by 2.5 cm to the right. The least radius of the cam is
5 cm and the stroke of the follower is 5 cm. Ascent and descent both take place by
uniform acceleration and retardation. Ascent takes place during 750 and descent
during 900 of cam rotation. Dwell between ascent and descent is 600 . Draw an
acceleration diagram and mark salient values. [16]

7. (a) Explain the gears used for Intersecting Shafts with neat sketches?
(b) The number of teeth on the gear and the pinion to two spur gears in mesh are
30 and 18 respectively. Both the gears have module of 6 mm and a pressure
angle of 200 . If the pinion rotates at 400 rpm, what will be the sliding velocity
at the moment the tip of the tooth of pinion has contact with the gear flank?
Take addendum equal to one module. Also find the maximum velocity of
sliding? [6+10]

8. A shaft Y is driven by a co-axial shaft X by means of an epicyclic gear train, as


shown in Figure 8. The wheel A is keyed to X and E to Y. The wheels B and D
are compound and carried on an arm F which can turn freely on the common axes
of X and Y. The wheel C is fixed. If the numbers of teeth on A,B,C,D and E are
respectively 20,64,80,30 and 50 and the shaft X makes 600 r.p.m. determine the
speed in r.p.m. and sense of rotation of the shaft Y. [16]

1. (a) Find out the degrees of freedom of the gear system shown in the following
Figure 1.
(b) The distancce between two parallel shafts is 15 mm and they are connected
by an Oldham’s coupling. The driving shaft revolves at 150 r.p.m.What will
be the maximum speed of sliding of the tongue of the intermediate piece along
its groove?
(c) What are resistant bodies? Is it necessary that the resistant bodies be rigid?
Give reasons for your answer. [4+8+4]

2. (a) What is the purpose of a Pantograph? Explain it’s working with a sketch.
(b) Provide the mathematical proof for working of pantograph. [8+8]

3. The mechanism shown in Figure 3 the length of the various links are,
OE = 15cm, AB = 40cm, BC = 60cm and CD = 20cm. The crank rotates at
70rpm. Determine

(a) Coriolis component acceleration of E with respect to F

4. In the Atkinson engine mechanism shown in Figure 4 the velocity and acceleration
of the slider at D are given as 40 cm/ sec and 450 cm/sec2 . Determine ω2 ,α2 , ω3 ,and
α3 . Take
O2 A = 4.5 cm, AB = 12 cm, O4 B= 6 cm, BC = 2cm
AC = 13 cm, CD = 14 cm. [16]

5. The driving shaft of Hook’s joint runs at a uniform speed of 250 rpm and the angle
between the shaft axes is 250 , the driven shaft with attached masses has a weight

of 54.5 Kg at a radius of gyration of 15.25Cm. If a steady torque of 2000 Kg-cm
resists rotation of the driven shaft, find the torque required at the driving shaft
when it rotates 450 . [16]

6. The following particulars refer to a cam with concave flank, circular nose and roller
follower.
Base circle diameter = 80mm,
distance between nose circle and cam axis = 58 mm
Nose radius = 26 mm,
Concave flank radius = 60 mm
Follower roller radius = 10mm, Speed = 10 rad/s
Semi angle of action = 600
Determine the velocity and acceleration for the follower when the cam has rotated
by 250 from the initial position of the rise of the follower. [16]

7. A pinion 120 mm PCD meshes with a gear wheel 400 mm PCD. The teeth are of
involute form, 2 mm module pitch and 250 angle of obliquity. Addendum for each
wheel is 6 mm. Find the angle that the pinion turns through while any one pair of
teeth continue to maintain contact. If the pinion is the driven and rotates at 200
rpm, find the velocity of sliding at the instant contact ceases. Prove any formula
you use in this latter part. [16]

8. A reverted epicyclic gear train for a hoist block is shown in Figure 8. The arm E
is keyed to the same shaft as the load drum and the wheel A is keyed to a second
shaft which carried a chain wheel, the chain being operated by hand. The two
shafts have common axis but can rotate independently. The wheels B and C are
compound and rotate together on a pin carried at the end of arm E. The wheel D
has internal teeth and is fixed to the outer casing of the block so that it does not
rotate.The wheels A and B have 16 and 36 teeth respectively with a module of 3
mm. The wheels C and D have a module of 4mm. Find: 1.the number of teeth on
wheels C and D when the speed of A is ten times the speed of arm E, both rotating
in the same sense, and 2 the speed of wheel D when the wheel A is fixed and the
arm E rotates at 450 r.p.m. anticlockwise. [16]

1. (a) Name different types of mechanism. Give examples of each of them.


(b) What is a Kinematic pair? State different methods of classifying them and
state the salient features of each method of classification. [8+8]

3. Figure 3 shows a worth whit quick return motion mechanism. The various dimen-
sions in the mechanism are as follows:
OQ = 100 mm; OA = 200 mm; QC = 150 mm and CD = 500 mm.
The crank OA makes an angle of 600 with vertical and rotates at 120 rpm in the
clockwise direction.
Locate all the instantaneous centers and find the velocity of ram D. [16]

4. A mechanism as shown in Figure 4 has the following dimensions: O1 A = 60 mm;
AB 180 mm; O2 B = 100 mm; O2 C = 180 mm and CD = 270 mm. The crank
O1 C = 180 mm and CD = 270 mm. The crank O1 A rotates clockwise at a uniform

speed of 120 r.p.m. The block D moves in vertical guides. Find by instantaneous
centre method, the velocity of D and the angular velocity of CD. [16]

5. A Hooke’s joint is used to connect two shafts whose axes are inclined at 200 . The
driving shaft rotates uniformly at 6,000 r.p.m. What are the extreme angular ve-
locities of the driven shaft? Find the maximum value of retardation or acceleration
and state the angle where both will occur.

6. A flat ended valve tappet is operated by a symmetrical cam with circular arcs for
flank and nose profiles. The total angle of action is 1500 base circle diameter 125
mm and the lift 25 mm. During the lift, the period of acceleration is half that of
the retardation. Speed of cam shaft is 1250 r.p.m. The straight line path of the
tapper passes through the cam axis. Find

(a) Radii of the nose and flank, and


(b) Maximum acceleration and retardation during the lift. [16]

7. (a) Derive an expression for minimum number of teeth (t) on the pinion if inter-
ference is to be avoided between two mating gears.
(b) Two 200 involute spur gears have a module of 10 mm. The addendum is equal
to one module. The larger gear has 50 teeth and the pinion has 13 teeth. Does

the interference occur? If it occurs, to what value should the pressure angle
be changed to eliminate interference? [8+8]

8. The diagram in Figure 8 gives the arrangement of an automatic belt tensioner. The
shaft C is a part of the machine being driven, and is driven by a belt through pulley
D and pinions A and B. The casting E can swing the shaft C. Show that the belt
will automatically tighten as power delivered to D increases, and find the general
expression for the force P tending to tighten the belt. Take x and y as the number
of teeth in A and B respectively and T as torque on D. [16]

2. Explain how Grass- Hopper mechanism and Watt mechanism generate approximate
straight-line motion. [16]

3. The crank and connecting rod of a steam engine are 12 cm and 60 cm respectively.
The centre of gravity of the connecting rod is 24 cm from the crank end. If the crank
rotates at 300 r.p.m clockwise, determine, the following using Klein’s construction.

(a) Velocity and acceleration or piston

(b) Angular velocity and angular acceleration of connecting rod.
(c) Velocity and acceleration or the centre of the granity or the connecting and
for the crank position at 300 from the inner dead center. [16]

4. In a for bar chain ABCD, AD is the fixed link 12 cm long, crank AB is 3 cm long
and rotates uniformly at 100 rpm clockwise while the link CD is 6 cm long and
oscillates about D. Link BC is equal to length AD. Find the angular velocity of
link DC when angle BAD is 600 . [16]

5. (a) Sketch a pantograph, explain its working and show that it can be used to
reproduce to an enlarged scale a given figure.
(b) The angle between the axes of two shafts joined by Hooke’s joint is 250 . The
driving shaft rotates at a uniform speed of 180 r.p.m, The driven shaft carries
a study load of 7.5 k.w. Calculate the mass of the fly wheel of the driven shaft
if its radius of gyration is 150 mm and the out put torque of the driven shaft
does not vary by more than 15% of the input shaft. [6+10]

6. A cam with a minimum radius of 25 mm rotating clock wise at uniform speed is


to be designed to give a roller follower at the end of a value rod motion described
below. The follower moves with uniform velocity.

(a) To raise the valve through 50mm during 1300 of rotation of cam
(b) To keep the valve fully raised through next 300
(c) To lower the valve during next 600 and
(d) To keep the valve closed during rest of the revolution of 1400 .

The diameter of the roller is 20 mm and the diameter of the cam shaft is 25mm.
Draw the profile of the cam when the line of stroke of the valve rod pass through
axis of the cam shaft. [16]

7. (a) If the interference between two involute gears is to be avoided then prove that
the maximum length of arc of contact will be equal to (R+ r) tan where R
and r = Pitch circle radius of wheel and pinion, Φ = Pressure angle.
(b) Two 200 involute spur gear having a velocity ratio of 2.5 meshes externally.
Module is 4 mm and the addendum is equal to 1.23 module. Pinion rotates
at 150 rpm. Find
i. the minimum number of teeth on each wheel to avoid interference
ii. the number of pairs of teeth in contact. [8+8]

8. In the epicyclic reduction gear as shown in Figure 8 the sunwheel D has 20 teeth
and is keyed to the input shaft. The wheels B also mesh with an internal gear C
which is fixed. The input shaft rotates at 2100 r.p.m. Determine the speed of the
output shaft and the torque required to fix C when the gears are transmitting 30
kW. [16]
