Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: My Personal Check Book

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 7th grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE7.EE.3 Solve multistep real-life and mathematical problems posed with
positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals) by applying
properties of operations as strategies to calculate with numbers, converting between forms as appropriate,
and assessing the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies.

Technology Standard Addressed: computational thinker

Selected Technology Tool: Excel spread sheet

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Describe how you could address Universal Design for Learning principles
to extend and support the learning experiences for all students.
Engagement: The students that are excelling in the class will be able to create multiple different graphs on
the excel sheet and analyze its data. Students that are struggling will be able to work with a partner.
Teacher will circle and facilitate.
Representation: the information is going to be organized in a table and a bar graph.
Action and Expression: Students are inputting data and analyzing the graphs and tables.

Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will circle and facilitate while students are creating their own
expenses, inputting and organizing their data on their excel sheet. The project will be introduced after
students have learned how to solve multistep real-life problems posed with positive and negative rational
numbers in any form. Students will be asked to choose a career. Each career will come with a certain amount
of money.
Students will create their own expenses and then input their data onto an excel sheet. After the input their
data, they will be analyzing the table and graph and write about their findings. This project will take two class
days to complete. Students will print and turn in their excel sheets for a grade. I will extend the student
learning to a higher-level thinking by allowing the students to create multiple graphs and ask them to
compare the graphs.

Reflective Practice: I feel the activity I created could impact student learning because students will be able
to deal with money and understand what it’s like to have to pay for bills. GeoGebra could further enhanced
this lesson. Students can input data into a graph to see its linear relationship.
