How Do You Decide What To Have In Your Capsule Wardrobe?

First of all, think about your lifestyle:

How do you divide up your time? We’ll go into more detail about this later.

What type of outfits does your day-to-day life require - are you mainly casual, smart, glamorous, corporate,
sporty?

And what about your social life? Do you go to big events or are you mainly down the pub?

Do you have any events or hobbies that you need certain clothes for?

What would you like your clothes to say about you?

Now, imagine taking everything out of your wardrobe and only putting back those items that create a head-to-toe
outfit.

Make a list of all the gaps in your wardrobe, think about which clothes and accessories you’d love to add to your
wardrobe, the ones you’d wear again and again.

What are the your favourite “default” items, ie. the ones you wear to death and are always in the wash?

These pieces will form the core of your wardrobe and are the items around which you should aim to build your
Capsule Wardrobe.

Choosing Your Colours

Your Capsule Wardrobe should be based around two or three colours plus neutrals. You can add colour with
accessories and coloured vest tops, and, at a later stage, other colours with more key pieces.

But in the beginning, aim to keep the colours limited and the basics should all work together. Choose your best
neutral colours which don’t have to include black. Consider navy, grey, brown and beige as softer alternatives.
Hold up each colour and shade to your face and see which one lifts your skin and makes you glow. That is the
best colour for you.

Pick a lighter colour too. Think about your best “white” – is it a pure bright white, or should you stick to a cream,
or maybe an ivory shade? (If you’re married, what colour did you choose for your wedding dress?)

Start with the neutrals, and make sure that you have basic trousers, skirts, and jackets in these colours, and then
add bags, shoes and belts that tone in with these basics, ie. if you’re using navy as your base colour, choose a
navy belt rather than a black one.

Use other items, such as vest tops and accessories to bring colours together. Bear in mind that wearing three
colours together is usually a safe bet. Wearing just two can look a little like you’ve tried too hard (unless it’s two
neutrals like white and navy, or black and white).

Wearing more than three colours can start to look like you haven’t given a lot of thought to your outfit.

Choose one metal for your capsule wardrobe and tone this in your jewellery, the buckles on your belt, and buckles
on your shoes. Or if you choose to get metallic shoes make sure they tone in, plus any hardware on your bags.

How To Put Together Your Perfect Capsule Wardrobe www.theglassslipper.co.uk

Step 1 – Planning Your Capsule Wardrobe

• List the all the areas of your life, eg. work, social life, sporting/ keep fit activities, hobbies, special functions
you have to attend, chilling out at home, etc. that require certain types of clothes

• Rougly work out how much time you spend on each part of your life – perhaps draw out a pie chart if it’s
easier for you to visualise. This will give you a good idea of how you spend your time and therefore, how
many clothes you need for each area of your life. You should aim to have the same proportion of clothes in
your wardrobe as time you spend on each portion of your life.

• Now, go and have a look in your wardrobe and see if this matches the list that you’ve just written. This
could be the first step in discovering why you stand in front of your packed wardrobe saying those dreaded
words “I have nothing to wear!”

• This is especially true among people who have changed their lifestyle and not their wardrobes to match,
especially new mums, whose body shapes have changed as well as their lifestyle and they haven’t had the
time to go shopping.

• Think about how you would ideally like to look – is it creative and funky, or nonchalantly thrown together,
is it powerful and efficient, or neat and tidy? Is it feminine and girly, or trendy and cutting edge? This will
obviously change with whatever activity you are doing, but we all generally have a leaning towards a “style
personality”.

• We find it really helps to clarify how you’d like to look by gathering together some tear sheets from
magazines. Even if you don’t think you have a style, you will find that you’ll pull out pictures of similar
types of clothes again and again.

• This represents what you really like, so don’t limit yourself by worrying about whether it’ll fit you or how
much it costs. It will show you where you really want to go with your look and what you like. You can
work out later how you can incorporate the look into your lifestyle.

• Have a think about how much time you have to spend on shopping, dressing and looking after your clothes.
This may influence what you buy, eg. there’s no point buying lots of dry clean if you never have time to go
to the dry cleaners.

• Also think about your budget. Aim to spend most of your money on the things you wear the most. Get into
the habit of calculating the cost-per-wear of every item you buy from now on. For example, if you wear
jeans all the time, buy a great pair of jeans (that make your bum and legs look amazing) which may cost
more than £100. Wear them every other day for a year and they’ve cost you £2 or less per wear! Contrast
this with an evening dress for the same amount that you wear twice which will cost you £50 per wear!

• Another factor is the weather, and whether you spend a lot of time outdoors or if you’re mostly indoors or
in the car. If you’re outside a lot, you need a good selection of coats/jackets/waterproofs to see you
through all seasons.

• Have a good think about how you would ideally like to look – and why you feel can’t look like that. With a
little thought it is possible.

• Work out what suits you in terms of shapes and colours… what makes you feel good every time you put it
on, and what brings in the compliments?

• Take pictures of yourself in outfits, then compare them to the tear sheets from the magazines. Ask yourself
what’s different between the two outfits.

• Do you need to take anything else into account, eg. if you have a baby, do you need to disguise stains and
marks? Do you need practical and comfortable clothes that make it easy for you to get down on your hands
and knees and play? If you travel a lot, do you have to be able to look immaculate at a moment’s notice and
need work outfits that won’t crease in the suitcase?

Step 2: Give Your Wardrobe A Makeover

• Take everything out of your wardrobe – yes, everything! This way you can analyse it and decide if it
should go back in or not. This is also a great way to remind yourself of the contents of your wardrobe.

• Often things just stay in there because you’ve had them forever. Trust us – once you’ve done this you will
feel cleansed!! That’s what all our clients say!

• Look at each item and put in piles of Staying, Going, Not Sure. Only put back items in the wardrobe if
you know they suit you, you love them, you wear them, and they’re in good condition.

• The Going pile should contain all the pieces you know you’ve never liked, and definitely don’t and won’t
wear. You could recoup some money by selling them on e-bay, at a dress agency or perhaps taking them to
a swap party or having a car boot sale.

• The Not Sure pile may be the trickiest. Go through everything in this pile and analyse what it is that doesn’t
work. Is it the wrong shape? The wrong colour? Is it because it doesn’t go with anything else in your
wardrobe?

• If you’re really not quite sure, put it in a bag or a box and put it out of sight – if you don’t look for it in the
next six months, move it to the Going pile!

• Have a pile for alterations and make sure you get them done. Do the same thing with all your shoes and
accessories.

• Get rid of the guilt! Don’t keep pieces just because you feel guilty that you haven’t worn them. Move on
and make some money back by selling them, or earn some brownie points by giving them away to someone

who will really cherish them. Now you’re learning how to organize your wardrobe the right way, you
won’t be making the same mistakes again.

• Once you have put back all the pieces you like and wear, you’ll be able to see the wood for the trees.
Finally, you’re ready to begin assembling your ultimate Capsule Wardrobe.

• Next step, identify the gaps in your wardrobe. Find your starting point: do you have any pieces that you can
base your Capsule Wardrobe around? Make sure it is something you like, fits you well, and is the right
colour and shape for you.

Step 3: The Basics Of A Fabulous Capsule Wardrobe

Your Capsule Wardrobe will consist of a number of items that work brilliantly together to create many different
outfits and looks.

The colour palette should be limited to make it easier for the items to fit together, and then you can add interest
with accessories. And, of course, you can continue to add to this collection. However, what we’re looking for at
this point are the core items to ensure you have an outfit to cover most occasions.

Here’s a quick checklist of Core Capsule Wardrobe Items:

1. Choose two or three neutrals and one or two accent colours that work well together. Check the contents of
your wardrobe first to make sure you have items that will work with your chosen colour palette.

2. When choosing prints, check they include some of your chosen colours.

3. Select simpler garments for the basis of your wardrobe as it’s easier to dress these up and down with
accessories. They will also be easy to mix and match. In addition, look for clothes that are versatile and can
be dressed up or down to suit the occasion.

4. Look at the different weights and textures of your clothes, and check they can be layered and used for both
summer and winter. So nothing too heavy or too light eg. choose a heavy cotton over a fine linen, and a
lightweight wool over a heavy wool. Fine needlecord can work well, and fine knits can be layered.

15 Key Pieces For A Smart/Casual Capsule Wardrobe

1. Casual daytime jeans – eg. Tommy Hilfiger

These are your comfy jeans that you love and feel great in for everyday casual wear. Just
because they’re comfortable doesn’t mean you should scrimp on style. Choose the best
shape for you, it may be skinny, boyfit, classic, bootcut or maybe a wider leg.

Lighter colours are more casual than darker, and indigo is a good classic choice. Maturer
ladies may want to go for a darker colour and a slightly higher waist.

Jeans are best kept as plain as possible (diamante trims and excess detailing such as rips,
whiskering, and worn-in patches can look cheap and tacky).

If you carry weight around your hips and thighs, detailing around here will draw attention to them. Lighter colours
will also highlight this area.

2. Smarter evening jeans - eg. City of Others

A darker indigo wash will look smarter and you may want to have these a little longer so they
can be worn with heels. Bootcut legs tend to suit everyone, but whichever style you choose,
make it an elegant classic rather than a fashion statement.

How To Put Together Your Perfect Capsule Wardrobe www.theglassslipper.co.uk

3. Navy cotton trousers – eg. Sandwich

These are most versatile in a cotton fabric (linen is a bit too summery). They could be a more
formal lightweight wool if you prefer, although some wools will need to be dry cleaned.

Flat front and a fairly wide leg are flattering for most bodyshapes and can be worn with
converse-type trainers or heels. For a smarter look, team them with a wedge heel, or wear
with stilettos for a dressier look.

If you want a dressier trouser, look for a tailored pair which can be worn with a jacket and a
smart blouse for the evening. A great daytime/office look could team these trousers with a shirt or vest top, a
cardigan and flat ballet pumps.

4. Navy skirt – eg. Phase Eight

This should go with your jackets and all three tops. A cotton fabric is useful and can be
dressed up or down. It can be worn with layers and boots in the winter, and vests and
sandals in the summer.

Choose a denim skirt if you want a more casual look.

5. Vest top – eg. Fat Face

A basic with wider straps that can be worn on its own or layered under shirts, cardigans
and jackets. It can also be worn under a long-sleeved top in winter to add warmth.

6. Vest top – eg. Kew

Choose one with spaghetti straps in your best colour. The right length is important – it
shouldn’t ride up, and it shouldn’t be so long that it cuts across your hips, especially if this is
your widest point.

Wider straps will be more flattering if you have a large bust as spaghetti straps won’t cover
your bra straps.

7. White top – eg. Top Shop

A white (or ivory or cream) vest top is a great basic. Add colour to it by layering it up
with another top and accessories.

Try to build up a collection of vest tops/camisoles in your best colours as these are an
inexpensive way to change your outfits and will create a whole host of completely new
looks.

You can try sporty and ribbed ones for a more casual look.

For more formal occasions, look for silky ones which give a super smooth line and look dressy worn with suits.

8. White blouse - eg. East

This top can be worn under your jacket, layered over coloured vest tops, or under a dress
for a more casual layered look.

Or sling a cardigan over it.

And try it with one of the longer sleeved tops underneath.

9. Striped top – eg. East

Wear this under your jacket and cardigan. You could layer one of your vest tops
underneath for a contrasting colour, or wear it underneath the white shirt.

10. Plain top – eg. Dorothy Perkins

You can create lots of look with this. Layer it with the vests or the striped top, also under
the tunic top, the jacket, cardigan, and dress.

Or team it with the silver bolero for a smart/casual feel.

11. Tunic dress – eg. Hale Bob

Try dressing this up with the navy trousers or dressing it down with jeans.

If you’re confident going short, wear it on its own with coloured opaque tights or leggings,
and boots or heels depending on how dressy you want to be.

Look for one that is long enough to wear on its own as a dress, but not too long that it
drowns you when you wear it over trousers. Be especially aware of this if you are on the
petite side. Just above the knee is about the right length.

Wear it with the cardigan and jacket, and the long-sleeved plain tops and camisoles underneath.

Choose a dress that can be worn in 3 different ways.

It can be patterned or plain, but should be a length that you’re comfortable with and a weight that can be worn in
summer and winter.

This dress is so versatile. You can wear it in many ways:

• with a belt, coloured tights and a jacket for formal occasions

• teamed with a cotton scarf and worn over jeans and flipflops for a casual look
• layered with a vest underneath, bare legs and wedges for a daytime summer look
• with thick tights, boots and your cardigan for winter

12. Evening top – eg. Coast

This should be in a more luxurious fabric or with some sort of embellishment or detail. You’ll
be able to team this with your smarter jeans, trousers, skirt and heels.

Or wear the cardigan, jacket or silver bolero over the top and dress it up more with jewellery.

13. Cardigan – eg. Great Plains

Choose one in a basic colour to tone with all your bottom halves. A fine knit will go under
your jacket, and it can also be worn layered with your vest top and/or long sleeved tops.

Add a scarf for colder days.

And jewellery or a flower corsage to dress it up.

How To Put Together Your Perfect Capsule Wardrobe www.theglassslipper.co.uk

14. Navy Jacket – eg. Monsoon

This should be a smartish jacket that can dress up your jeans, and be worn with your dress.
Make sure it isn’t too casual – it’s a functional piece, but it needs to be more versatile than a
fleece or a puffa jacket.

Make sure that it also goes with your skirt and your trousers.

A basic colour is best ie. chocolate brown or navy, maybe with some sort of texture to add
interest.

You can add warmth with a scarf and layers underneath for a more casual look.

Or wear it with smarter jeans and your evening top for the evening.

It’s worth hunting around to find the perfect one for you - there’s nothing worse than having a fabulous outfit,
and then ruining it with the wrong jacket.

15. Silver shrug – eg. Chesca

This is really useful to wear in the evenings to dress up your outfit. It will also make your
vest tops and summery tops more wearable all year round.

It looks good with jeans and over dresses, and can be dressed up with brooches or flower
corsages. Choose silver if you have cool colouring, and gold if you’re warm.

It’s also great for covering up less than perfect arms.

16. Accessories

It’s a good idea to build up your accessories so that you can create even more different looks with your Capsule
Wardrobe. A selection of necklaces, bracelets, and scarves from your chosen colour palette will dress your outfits
up and down, and really finish them off.

Different coloured tights in various thicknesses will also add interest to your outfits. Be careful if your legs are on
the chunky side - don’t go too patterned, bright or shiny.

Have a selection of formal and casual bags which will help to change your looks.

Belts are another great way to add interest and colour, or try using a long scarf or ribbon instead.

Bags and shoes in metallic colours can be really useful and go with everything.

Tights
Coloured tights are another way to ring the changes to your outfits. If your legs are on the chunky side, choose a

Belts
Have a selection of belts that tone with your outfits. They will really finish off your look and give you a great

Scarves
Don’t keep these just for winter, have a few that you can add to your outfits throughout the year. Skinny scarves
can be threaded through the loops of your jeans instead of a belt.

Cotton scarves are handy for a cooler summer evening – wear with a lighter weight jacket.

Coloured scarves can completely change the look of your winter coat (and add different coloured gloves).

Invest in a selection of scarves as they can really update your look and make you feel as if you have lots of new
outfits! The ones below are all from Marks & Spencer.

Step 5: Shopping For Your Capsule Wardrobe

• Decide which neutral and accent colours will form the basis of your Capsule Wardrobe.
• Weekday mornings are the best times to shop. Preferably earlier in the week as the shops are usually quieter
and you won’t give up the will to live while queuing for the changing rooms!
• Remember to apply the cost-per-wear rule to each item before you buy it.
• Wear make-up when you go shopping and make sure your hair is looking good, or you may not like
anything you try on.
• Avoid impulse buying.
• Always buy the best quality you can afford (if you wear the item frequently, the cost-per-wear will be
minimal).
• Every item in your wardrobe should go with at least 3 other pieces.
• Remember the 5-point principle: Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.
• Look for pieces that are reasonably classic ie. always on trend. Even though the classics get updated, these
will last much longer than the latest fashion trend.
• Look for the most flattering cut for your bodyshape and the best quality that you can afford. Sales are a
great time to shop as you may be able to buy better quality pieces than you would normally buy.
• Make sure each item fits you perfectly. If it doesn’t, get it altered by a local tailor.
• We all have “favourite pieces” in our wardrobe that we just can’t get enough of. Try to analyse what it is
about these items that make you look fabulous and see if you can repeat this. Often it will be the fit. A
general rule of thumb is the more expensive items tend to have a more flattering cut.
• When you’re planning your evening wardrobe, consider co-ordinating separates which will be more
versatile and, therefore, more cost-effective than a range of evening dresses.
