CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Insecticides are used to kill insects. Nowadays, insecticides are not only expensive but also

contain chemicals that may be harmful for the skin. These are very in demand for the prevention

of mosquito-related diseases. Diseases like dengue, malaria, and yellow fever are one of common

diseases. But now with the innovation of technology, new versions of repellents are coming out.

Durian, Durio zibethinus, is a tropical fruit popular among Southeast Asian countries like

Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines. It is referred to as the King of Fruits and is

known for its large size, strong odor and formidable thorn-covered husk. Its husk is known for its

spiky outer shell and is usually thrown away after eating durian.

Instead of discarding the husk and adding it into the pile of garbages, the researchers will

use the durian husks as an alternative insecticide for mosquitoes. It will benefit the people and

will even lessen the garbages, the environment has right now. The researchers will investigate if

it would be effective by getting the extract of the durian husk and testing it to mosquitoes.

The study entitled "Durian Husk Extract as Insecticide for Mosquitoes" aims to know if

Durian husk can be used as an alternative insecticide for mosquitoes.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine if durian husk can be a repellent for mosquitoes. It seeks to

examine the possibilities of using objects that are regarded as leftovers and transforming it to
2

something useful. This study will specifically focus on how to find an answers in the following

questions.

1. Is Durian Husk a good repellent for mosquitoes?

2. What is the level of effectiveness of durian husk as a repellent?

3. What are the advantages of using durian husk as a repellent?

Significance of the Study

Using insectices are not that safe to use due to the chemicals that it consist. That is why

the researchers will use durian husks as an alternative insecticide for mosquitoes. This study has

many advantages such as:

1. PEOPLE. It is safer to use natural insecticides because it do not contain chemicals that

might be harmful to people unlike some which are sold in markets. It is also cheaper than

buying commercially sold insecticides.

2. WASTE. Durian husks are regarded as trash since it is usually thrown away after eating

durian. Using durian husks as an alternative insecticide will minimize the garbage in our

environment.

3. HEALTH PROBLEMS. Since insecticides are used to kill insects, it will minimize the

mosquitoes in our environment and prevent the widespread of mosquito-related diseases.

4. FUTURE RESEARCHERS. This study will give further knowledge future researchers that

using durian husks, which are regarded as trash, as an alternative insecticide is possible.

Hypothesis

Ho1: Durian husk extract is safe and effective as an alternative insecticide.

Ho2: It works as or almost the same effect with the commercially sold in markets.

Ho3: There is no significant relationship between the durian husk and insecticide.

Null Hypothesis: Durian husk extract is not an effective insecticide.

Objectives

The main objective of this research is to prevent the wide spread of mosquitoes that cause

diseases like Dengue, Malaria, and many more. Durian husk extract will be used to kill

mosquitoes. Determine if it is effective, and make an alternative insecticide instead of using

insecticide that have chemicals that may be harmful to the skin.

Scope and Limitation

The research will focus on creating an alternative of an insect repellent made out of

durian husks. The scope and limitation of this study is the problems of many citizens regarding

with the mosquito-borne diseases. It focuses on using the extract of the husk as repellent for
4

mosquitoes and the benefits the people will get by using it. It excludes the use and effect of

different repellent sold in markets.

Definition of Terms

The following are defined to assist you in understanding more the frequently used and

important terms in the study.

Durian also called as Durio zibethinus is a tropical fruit popular in Southeast Asian countries. In

this study, the husk of the durian will be removed and will be used in the general procedure.

Husk is the dry outer covering of some fruits or seeds. In this study, the husk will be used as an

alternative insecticide

Insecticide is used to kill insects. In this study, it will be used to kill mosquitoes and it will be

made from the extract of durian husk.

Mosquito a slender long-legged fly with aquatic larvae. In this study, the insecticide will be used

to the mosquitoes.

Chemicals are a distinct compound or substance, especially one which has been artificially

prepared or purified. In this study, it is regarded as the substances present in an insecticide.
