In any analysis of this question we are confronted by two distinct and opposed claims. One is a theological doctrine; the other is called a scientific conclusion, Both of them are accepted by a large number of persons on faith, Both of them are sustained by the same kind of evi- Gence when presented by the average representative of the school support- ing then, However, there is one question that is forced into the mind by the theo- logical doctrine, which is not aroused by the scientific conclusion. It is: "why?" To answer this all-important question is the purpose of this carefully prepared, though brief, dissertation, To proceed properly let us place in a few words the two opposing claims in regard to man's destiny: 1. And the term materialistic science is used to distinguish one form of “science” from the many. Likewise, in number one, the words soul and personality are used as syn- onymous only because theology assumes such to be representative of a fact. We have said that the theological statement (number one) arouses the nat- Ural question "Why?" In answering the "Why?" we really enter the discus- sion with a third claim, a third postulation, if you will, which is neither theological nor strictly scientific, but philosophical, and which, like pure philosophy, involves the laws, principles, and manifestations of nature, An 01d, Old Question ea. question of man's destiny, or the fate of his "personality" after the death of the body, is so old that its origin is lost in antiquity. The earliest records of man's thinking indicate that the discussion was a
