INTRODUCTION

The project is based upon the concept of thermodynamics and heat transfer in
which the task is to raise the coin of 2Rs from ground level to a certain height.
The maximum the height the max point gained by the group . The maximum
members in the group should not exceed by 4 members . The task of project
base learning was given to the classes nearly 4th week of July . The pbl was
based on heat transfer subject which is introduced by Mumbai university in the
5th sem of engineering.
The importance of heat transfer helps you to understand how to determine the
process of heat which you are been exposed to there such as conduction
convection, radiation. Understand the process which you can use and analysis of
heat that you need to use for your product.
Some parts of thermodynamics which are used by mechanical engineers in the
fields of heat conversion. Mechanical engineers use thermo-science to design
engines and power plants, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)
systems, heat exchanger, heat sinks, radiators, refrigeration, insulation and
others.

TERMS AND CONDITION : (GIVEN)

4
Different ideas :

The three main ideas which came in to our mind are as follows ;
1.Expansion of copper wire based ideas to lift the coin
2.Hot air balloon
3.Sterling engine

1. Expansion of copper wire based ideas to lift the coin

Thermal expansion is the tendency of matter to change in volume in response to a change in
temperature, through heat transfer .the main aim was to load the copper wire using counter weights
and introduce the heat to the wire at a point where stress concentration in the copper wire is more . so
that it can continue to expand under stress and strain and also through the thermal expansion
coefficient . then the translatory downward motion of the counter weights wold be use further to lift
the coin using leverage mechanism .

2. Hot air balloon

The concept of hot air balloon was a simple concept to raise the coin using
the candle light . the air inside the balloon expand due to the heat introduced
which raise the balloon to a certain height .

3.Stirling engine
A Stirling engine is a heat engine that operates by cyclic compression and
expansion of air or other gas at different temperatures, such that there is a net
conversion of heat energy to mechanical work.

5
Main challenges and plans :

1.Main challenges in copper wire expansion method :

The displacement of the coin which will be going to take place through this
concept was small enough. Because the copper wire expansion is very small
compare which can raise the coin to a very small limit compare to another to
ideas.

2. Main challenges in making Hot air balloon

The main disadvantage of the hot air balloon was that the coin would not be
raised at constant position the balloon comes down and goes up at a certain
interval of time the heat supplied for the expansion of the air inside balloon was
fluctuating due to the air flow in the atmosphere and the contact of the flame to
the ballon can lead to the burning of baloon.

3. The main challenges in making Stirling engine

The power receiving from the engine will be good enough to raise the coin
from the ground level . but the main problem is that to design a separate
mechanism rather than the heat engine to lift the coin because the heat engine
produces the rotary motion and the motion required to raise the coin was the
reciprocatory . so the design is complex and is challenging.

The idea selected by our group temporarily .

The concept of the sterling engine is a good choice due to its power factor .

6
Some information about stirling engine :

Application of stirling engine :

1) Stirling engine is used in some submarines because this engine produce

very less noise thus serving its purpose for submarine which is used for
secret purposes.
2) It is used as solar stirling engine in some countries like New Zealand to
generate electricity. It is more efficient than non concentrated
photovoltaic cells
3) It works on temperature difference, so reveresly it can be used to generate
temperature difference by providing mechanical energy. In this way it can
used both as heat pump and coolers. The cryocoolers can be used to achieve
temperature as low as -73K or -200° C . This temperature is enough to
liquify most of the gases. But its cost is high.

conclusion
The Stirling engine is noted for its high efficiency compared to steam engines, quiet
operation, and the ease with which it can use almost any heat source. This engine is currently
exciting interest as the core component of micro combined heat and power (CHP) units, in
which it is more efficient and safer than a comparable steam engine

Result :

The coin was not being lifted because of insufficient amount of heat given by 2 candle
and also the limitation in selection of the wright method to lift the coin there was
restriction to use any motor , by which it could be possible to lift the coin using
seebeck and peltier effect. According to the pbl review motor was prohibited to use in
lifting of coin but one day before pbl submission this prohibition was removed and
peltier module was allowed to used so we made nochanges in the modal and submitted
the unsuccessful modal .
