VALVE TIMING PROCEDURE
q Before disassembly, rotate the crankshaft to align crank key with the oil jet

All retainers must be Properly Torqued (Air tools are not torque wrenches)
STEP 1: 2nd TIMING CHAIN INSTALLATION
(RIGHT BANK)
q Confirm that crank key and oil jet are still
aligned

If any camshafts are installed, DO NOT rotate


the crankshaft excessively or the pistons will
contact the valve train.

q Apply oil to, then install timing chain tensioner adjuster


Number 2. Tighten the mount bolts to the specification

q Apply oil to all sliding surfaces of the mark

q Install the RH bank 2nd timing chain to the camshafts by

q Install the camshaft housing pins to the housing cap bolts *Please refer to Service Bulletin
holes. Install the camshafts and 2nd timing chain as an AS14-99 (99 Grand Vitara) in
assembly with the intake camshaft knock pin facing the Suzukivision for more information
match mark. Install the camshaft housings according to
the embossed marks on each camshaft housing.

q Apply oil to the housing bolts and thread them into the
housing. Tighten them in three stages in the sequence
Indicated.

12 N.m (1.2 kg-m, 8.5 lb-ft)

q Install timing chain guide number 3. Tighten the mount


bolts to the specification

STEP 2: 1ST TIMING CHAIN INSTALLATION Dowel

q With the crankshaft timing pulley key aligned to the oil jet, Match
install the timing chain sprocket (if removed). mark

q Make sure that the timing mark on the right bank intake
camshaft is aligned with the match mark.
q Install the 1st timing chain intake camshaft sprocket to the
right bank intake camshaft in such a way that it’s RH mark
can be seen from the front of the engine. Hold the hex part
of the intake camshaft with a wrench and tighten the
sprocket bolt to the specified tightening torque.

80 N.m (8.0 kg-m, 57.5 lb-ft)
q Install the 1st timing chain to the right intake camshaft by
aligning the match mark on the 1st timing chain intake
camshaft sprocket with the silver plate on the 1st timing
chain.

q Apply oil to the number 2 idler sprocket bush and install


the idler sprocket to the sprocket shaft located on the LH
cylinder head.

q Attach the timing chain to the number 2 idler sprocket by


aligning the match marks on the idler sprocket to the
silver plate on the 1st timing chain.

q Align the timing chain to the crankshaft sprocket by


aligning the match marks on the crankshaft sprocket to
the gold (yellow) plate on the 1 st timing chain. You may
have to turn the right bank intake camshaft slightly by
using a wrench on it’s hex part. Match mark

q Apply oil to the idler sprocket number 1
bearing and install the idler sprocket to
the sprocket shaft. Tighten the idler
sprocket to the specified tightening
torque.

45 N.m (4.5 kg-m, 32.5 lb-ft)

q With the latch of the number 1 tensioner adjuster pushed


up and the plunger pushed back into the body, insert a
stopper between the latch and the body.

q Install the timing chain tensioner and tighten the
nut to the specified torque.

q Install the number 1 tensioner adjuster and tighten


it’s mounting bolts to the specified torque. Pull out
the stopper to release the tensioner.

Use a small screwdriver to extend the adjuster


out until you hear a “click”. DO NOT force the
tensioner to the next notch.
