Q # 01. (CLO 1, PLO 1)

A) [2.0]
Consider the liquid-level system shown in Figure 1. In the system, 𝑄1 and 𝑄2 are steady-state
inflow rates and 𝐻1 and 𝐻2 are steady-state heads. The quantities𝑞𝑖1 , 𝑞𝑖2 , ℎ1 , ℎ2 , 𝑞1, and 𝑞𝑜 are
considered small. Obtain a state-space representation for the system when ℎ1 and ℎ2 are the
outputs and 𝑞𝑖1 and 𝑞𝑖2 are the inputs.

Figure 1.

B) [1.0]
Draw the signal flow graph of the state equations.

C) [2.0]
Find out the impulse, ramp and parabolic response of the system given below

C ( s) K (1  s)

R( s ) Ts  1
D) [1.0]
𝑅𝑒𝑔.𝑁𝑜 𝑅1 3 3
Consider 𝑅1 = 1000 , 𝑅2 = 2 and 𝐶1 = 10𝑚 and 𝐶2 = 5𝑚 , use MATLAB to obtain system
transfer function of Question 1 (A).

E) [1.0]
Consider a higher-order system defined by

𝑪(𝒔) 𝟔. 𝟑𝟐𝟐𝟑𝑺𝟐 + 𝟏𝟖𝒔 + 𝟏𝟐. 𝟖𝟏𝟏

= 𝟒
𝑹(𝒔) 𝑺 + 𝟔𝑺𝟑 + 𝟏𝟏. 𝟑𝟐𝟐𝟑𝑺𝟐 + 𝟏𝟖𝑺 + 𝟏𝟐. 𝟖𝟏𝟏

Using MATLAB Obtain pole zero map. Is this system stable?

F) [2.0]
Using MATLAB, plot the unit step response curve for the system given in Q. 1 (E). Using
MATLAB, obtain the rise time, peak time, maximum overshoot and settling time.

G) [1.0]
Using MATLAB obtain the response of system given in Q. 1 (E), when the input is given by

𝒓 = 𝒆−𝟎.𝟓𝒕
