One of the vide spectrum of value added services of the Institute is to prepare a brief district
industrial profiles of each district for the benefit of aspiring and existing entrepreneurs in the State of
Tamil Nadu and other States
This report contains brief details of the District, geographical information, statistical data relating
to MSME’s of the district, registration under Udyog Aadhaar Memoramdum (UAM), potential areas for
investment in service sector and manufacturing sector, identified industrial clusters, key contacts for
whom to contact for what etc. . The report has been prepared based on our earlier first edition report
duly updated from data/inputs collected by District nodal officers and from reports/publications of M/o.
MSME, Govt. of India and Govt. of Tamil Nadu, MSME Deptt.
Economic Investigation Division of the Institute has taken special efforts in collection and
compilation of the relevant data for preparing the document not only for the TRICHIRAPALLI District
but for all the Districts of Tamil Nadu. My sincere thanks to all the officers of the Institute for their
cooperation in bringing out this brief industrial profile.
I am sure that that this document will be of much useful for the benefit of aspiring and existing
entrepreneurs who are desirous of setting up of MSMEs in the State of Tamil Nadu in general and in

BRIEF INDUSTRIAL PROFILE OF TIRUCHIRAPPALLI DISTRICT
2015-16
The total net sown area in the district is 206578 hectares of land.The district is mainly
irrigated by the Kaveri River. Major crops grown in the district are rice, sugarcane, Banana,
Coconut, Cotton, Corn and Groundnut.
IIM Trichy is the 11th IIM in the country. The institute offers 4 management programmes.
These programmes contain a well-designed course curriculum with a global perspective.
The district lies between 11” 00’ and 12” 00’ degrees of the northern latitude and
between 77” 28’ and 78” 50’ degrees of the eastern longitude.
1.2 Topography:
The district has a mean temperature with low humidity. The hottest period is from April
to June. Temperature of the district varies from 19.7 Degree Centigrade to 39.4 Degree
Centigrade.

The River Cauvery irrigates about 51,000 Ha. in Trichy, Lalgudi and Musiri Divisions.
The normal annual rainfall is 842.60 mm. Multi various crops are grown in this District and
Agriculture is the main occupation for most of the people in the District. Alluvial sandy loam
and loam soil constitutes major portion of the central regions, which form the Cauvery delta in
the district. In Lalgudi, Manachanallur and Andanallur blocks, loamy soil is predominant. Red
soil and black soil are predominant in the dry tracks of the district.
1.4 Forests:
With an area of 36,246 hectares under forest cover the district accounts for 1.65
percentage of the total forest area of the State. Honey and Cashewnut are the main
forest produce besides fuel wood.

The district is well connected by road, air and rail. The district has good network of post,
telegraph and telephone facilities. The district has good educational institutional framework.
The support organization like DIC, DRDA, Small Industries Service Institute (SISI), Khadi and
Village Industries Board (KIVIB) etc. operating in the district provide required inputs to the
entrepreneurs in the micro small and medium and also in village industrial sectors. Nearly 23%
of the workforce depends on agriculture and about 37.8% of the geographical area (440383 ha)
has been brought under cultivation. The area sown more than once was 14346 ha.

Apart from BHEL other PSUs HAPP, OFT and Railway Workshop at Ponmalai are also
playing pivotal role in the industrial growth of the District. The district also has a large number
of units established in Textiles and apparels followed by engineering and repairing and
servicing. Large numbers of MSMEs have been established in textile and apparels and
engineering units. Majority of the investments in this district have taken place in non-electrical
machinery. Large part of the investments has also taken place in metals and metal products.

3.1 Industry at a Glance
Govt. of India, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises(MSME) has notified the
Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum(UAM) under the MSMED Act, 2006 vide gazette notification [SO
No. 2576(E)] dated 18-09-2015 in order to promote ease of doing business for MSMEs. A one-
page simple registration form for online filing of UAM has been introduced which replaces the
filing of Entrepreneur’s Memorandum Part I & II. The filing of UAM can be done on
www.udyogaadhaar.gov.in or www.msmeonline.tn.gov.in .Registration is online
and user-friendly. UAM can be filed on self-declaration basis. No documentation required. No
Fee for filing. Can file more than one Udyog Aadhaar with same Aadhaar Number. EM-I has
been abolished. Udyog Aadhaar (UA) is for running units. No need to apply for upcoming
units.

3.2.1 BLOCKWISE POTENTIAL & VIABLE PROJECTS IN TIRUCHIRAPPALLI
DISTRICT
The following are the thrust sector activities identified in the district with a substantial
potential for growth in the next five years.
Readymade Garments
This activity is gaining momentum nowadays and the existing units are having sufficient
orders and more units are expected to come in the future.
CNC Machining
Around 20 CNC machine shops are functioning in Thriuverumbur block and this number
is likely to double in the near future. Most of the demand comes from BHEL. Potential in this
line is high.

Advanced Welding technologies & Fabrication works
Trichy is a known Fabrication hub. This is due to BHEL presence here. This is a thriving
activity and annually about 4 lakh M.S. materials are converted into Boiler Products.
Food Processing
Being basically an agrarian district Tiruchi is always in the map of food processing
industries. Activities like Modern Rice Mill, Food Oils, Mushroom Processing, Flour Milling are
the important activities in this sector.
