But what is BIM?

• Multi-dimensional
digital tool

• Visual model
managing asset data
from inception to
demolition

• Collaborative 3D
Model – the creation,
gathering and
exchange of data to
all parties

BIM Maturity Model

• Level 0 - Unmanaged CAD

• Level 1 - Managed CAD in 2 or 3D

• Level 2 – BIM - Managed ‘Collabrative’ 3D

environment
• Require Level 2 on all public sector asset
procurement by 2016

• Level 3 – Fully open process and data integration,

or “iBIM” (integrated BIM)

• Level 3 BIM set out in the Digital Built Britain

Strategy
• BIM L3 is all about capturing the inherent value in our
built assets, and also the data to help create a digital
and smart city economy

But what of the uptake of BIM thus far?

According to the NBS National BIM Report 2015:

• In the last year 48% have used BIM on at least one project
• 83% expect to be using BIM in one years’ time (by 2016)
• A majority (59%) of active BIM users suggest they have reached
‘level 2’ BIM
• 45% of people describe themselves as confident in their knowledge
and skills in BIM
• 67% suggest that the Industry is not clear enough on what BIM
is…

Global BIM

• ISO 19650 Collaborative working over asset lifecycle,

based on PAS 1192-2
• BSI providing input into ISO TC/59 SC13/Task Force
1 & 2 – Strategy & Terminology

• CEN TC/442 – BIM

• First meeting on 16th September
• But our stakeholders remind us that BIM is first
and foremost an international matter...
