DIRECTOR’S!STATEMENT!!
In!early!2015!I!met!a!couple,!they!were!relaxed!and!in!love.!They!had!a!toddler!who!
was!playing,!circling!them,!cheeky!and!content.!We!began!chatting!and!I!learnt!they!
were!dressed!in!clothes!donated!to!them!and!that!their!son!had!been!operated!on!
after! falling! ill! sleeping! on! the! floor! of! a! Hungarian! jail! cell.! I! left! them! feeling!
sickened! and! disturbed,! knowing! they! were! being! sent! back! to! the! nightmare! they!
had!risked!their!lives!to!escape.!!
!!
I!could!not!shake!them!from!my!mind.!Theirs!is!one!harrowing!story!among!millions,!
as!each!displaced!family!has!their!own.!We!are!witnessing!this!crisis!live!and!how!we!
deal!with!it!reflects!who!we!are.!The!refugees!that!have!fled!into!Europe,!like!us,!are!
mothers,! fathers,! daughters! and! sons.! They! have! left! home,! their! lives! devastated!
and! now! each! searches! desperately! for! safe! shelter! and! a! chance! to! rebuild! their!

Q&A!WITH!DIRECTOR!AND!WRITER!DANIEL!MULLOY!
!
What!was!your!inspiration!for!the!film?!
The!main!inspiration!was!from!this!family!of!refugees!I!met!at!the!Kosovo!Macedonia!
border!in!2015!but!I!have!also!pulled!from!my!personal!experience.!My!partner!is!a!
former! refugee;! her! sense! of! bravery,! her! knowledge! that! anything! is! possible! and!
her!compassion!is!infectious.!Her!ability!to!love!me!despite!my!failings!is!also!key!to!
the!couples!development!through!the!film.!And!my!grandmother!who!was!the!sole!
survivor!of!her!family!after!the!holocaust.!She!passed!away!last!year!aged!103!after!a!
life!lived!working!as!a!paediatrician,!she!will!always!be!an!inspiration.!!
!
In!terms!of!filming,!collaborating!with!Jack!and!Holly!was!hugely!inspiring.!They!are!
both! remarkable! artists! and! humans,! able! to! convey! so! much! with! a! single! glance.!
They! gave! everything! to! their! roles.! They! cared! for! their! on&screen! kids! constantly!
and!created!a!true!bond!which!is!clear!in!every!frame.!It!was!an!honour!to!work!with!
consummate!artists.!We!where!working!to!cram!a!huge!schedule!into!a!short!shoot!
and!I!will!never!forget!the!depths!they!went!to,!with!often!only!a!single!take,!to!give!
such!immense!performances.!
!!
How!did!the!film!get!off!the!ground!and!what!was!the!process!of!getting!the!film!
made?!

This! project! moved! forward! because! of! the! goodwill! of! so! many! people! and!
organizations.! From! my! friends! who! let! us! shoot! in! their! house! to! charities! who!
supported!us,!even!the!Kosovo!security!service!came!on!board!with!props,!personnel!
and!expertise.!All!were!driven!by!the!fact!that!they!had!a!deep!empathy!for!what!so!
many!millions!of!refugees!are!going!through!now.!
!
It! began! in! Kosovo! where! almost! the! whole! team! involved! with! HOME! are! former!
refugees.!Dokufest!and!Shpend!Qamili,!believed!in!the!project!and!wanted!to!make!it!
happen.! They! really! got! it! going.! The! second! person! to! come! on! board! was! Jack!
O’Connell!who!had!an!incredible!dedication!to!the!film.!
!
After! that! my! good! friend,! producer! Afolabi! Kuti! came! on! board! and! brought! in!
production! companies! Somesuch! and! BlackSheep! Studios! in! London.! Once! the!
producing!team!was!set!we!approached!Holliday!Grainger!to!play!with!Jack.!
!!
Really! so! many! people! coming! together! and! supporting! the! project,! however! they!
could,! was! the! key.! From! music! artists! such! as! Dizzee! Rascal,! Wiley! and! Cold! Play!
who! donated! music! for! the! soundtrack! to! Jack! and! Holliday! donating! their!
performances,!the!crew!in!Kosovo!and!London,!post!houses!like!the!Mill!and!Factory.!
The!generosity!and!support!from!everyone!came!from!a!desire!and!in!belief!in!the!
same!core!reason!of!helping!refugees.!
Where!did!you!shoot?!
London,! Kosovo! and! a! couple! of! shots! in! Albania.! In! Kosovo! there! was! a! deep!
empathy!for!those!caught!in!the!crisis!so!it!was!an!ideal!place!to!shoot.!Momentum!
built!and!we!started!to!draw!in!whole!towns!of!people!willing!to!help.!The!people!of!
Kosovo!are!the!most!hospitable!I!have!ever!met.!!!!
!!
Why!did!you!decide!to!tell!the!story!this!way?!
No!civilian!expects!to!be!in!war,!it!is!thrown!at!people!and!no!one!wants!it.!I!wanted!
to! create! a! film! that! was! at! once! completely! nonsensical! and! ludicrous! whilst! on!
another!level!is!as!real!and!devastating!as!we!could!make!it.!There!is!no!reason!this!
family!goes!into!war,!there!is!no!sense!to!it,!just!as!the!idea!of!anyone!ever!staying!in!
war! is! nonsensical.! No! one! should! be! expected! to! stay.! Every! refugee! is! doing! the!
right!and!logical!thing,!leaving!their!homes!and!their!lives!so!that!their!families!are!
not!killed!and!tortured.!
