[Pirates]

Location: South Fork school

Materials:
Things I Need: Things I will Provide:
 Paint, paint brushes, Pape, pirate  Pirate music, speaker, white shirts, dress
book, music, pictures of pirate up like a pirate, pirate name chart
flags, glue, tape, markers, index
cards, scissors

Advanced Preparation:
 Find Pirate music
 Print Pirate names
 Split class up into three teams

Description of Activity:
 The children will be making a team flag out of an old shirt. They will be using
paint and markers to create their pirate flag for their future ship. Also, the
groups will be creating a team name, and discovering each of their own pirate
names.
Purpose:
 The purpose is to build teamwork and social domain with the children.
 My goal is to help the children interact with each other, and develop new
skills and challenges; specifically by helping students develop mutual trust
between me as the teacher and them as the students, and by providing
stimulating activities to keep the students engaged and on task.
 Core concepts:
o 4. “Children are active participants in their own development,
reflecting the intrinsic human drive to explore and master one’s
environment.” This core concept connects to my activity because the
children are going to explore the different activities and discover their
pirate name on their own.
o 5. “Human relationships, and the effects of relationships on
relationships, are the building blocks of healthy development.”
Building a relationship with children in the classroom is vital as a
teacher, as well as students building a relationship with each other.
Putting the children into teams and talking like a pirate will help build
relationships both between children and teachers.

them in my pirate voice with ocean wave music playing in the background.
3. I will start off by teaching them a few simple pirate words and have them repeat
them back to me- 5 minutes
a. Must learn how to talk like a pirate: Pirates have their each other’s back
and use the “pirate code.”
b. First word: Yo Ho Ho = Hooray
c. Next word: Matey= friend
d. Third word: Scallywag= mischief
4. After getting them excited about pirate words, I will teach them the Pirate codes,
which will be the rules for the class room. 2 minute
a. Pirate Codes:
i. Arrr Respect me Matey’s
5. Split into 3 groups by age ( 15 minutes)
a. Each group will go with a teacher to their stations
b. Teacher will hand out pirate name chart and help the children find their
pirate name.

come up with a team name, then children will be given the rest of the time
to make their flag.
6. Pirate Flags ( 15 minutes)
a. I will hand out white t-shirts to each group after the pirate name activity.
Children will have markers and scissors to use to decorate their pirate flag.
(if extra time, paint will be provided for them to enhance their flag).
7. Leave 5 minutes at the end of class to clean up together as a class

Closure:

 Turn off the lights and have the children freeze and tell them it is time to clean up
before the bell rings.
 Send the students over to sit at the kiva when they are done with the activities to
join in a simple game with another teacher (Pictionary, scattegories, hangman,
etc.)
Clean-up:
 Turn on some exciting music and have the children race to clean up before the
song is done playing.
 Have the children help carry the flags down to Lindsey’s office after the activity
is over
 Have children help put tables and chairs back into the proper place
Safety considerations:
 I will move the tables and chairs out of the way for morespace
 Paint getting on clothes and being messy
 Remind children to respect the kiva and not climb on it
 Keep an eye out for children who try to leave the room without permission

Child Focused/Age Appropriate:

 Pirate names is very appropriate for children in this age group, as it gives them the
opportunity to be challenged with words, but very capable of doing it
independently
 Painting and drawing on the flag is appropriate because it helps bring out their
creativity and collaboration and team work and social skills

 Caroline be in charge of the Kindergarteners and first graders
 Natalie will be in charge of the 2nd and 3rd grades
 Emily will be in charge of 4th graders

o Provide other activities for these children who do not want to participate
 Children fighting
o Split up the children who don’t get along to avoid problems and keep a
teacher with them at all times
 Children might run out the door
o Interact with children who could potentially run out the door by capturing
their interest throughout the activities
