Guest Speaker Report
On 30th October 2017 from 12pm to 2pm, we had attended a Guest lecturer talk held by the faculty of
quantity surveying. This guest lecturer talk entitled as Lateral Stability of Building - The Fundamentals
and is delivered by Ir. Yasotha Chettty. Ir. Yasotha Chettty is a structural engineer and has been involved
in building projects in UK, Europe, Middle East and Malaysia. IR Yasotha worked nine years in England
for two well reputed multidisciplinary building consultants which is Buro Happold and Ramboll
(Whitbybird). She returns to Malaysia in the year of 2011 and joined AECOM, a Fortune 500 engineering
firm, heading civil and structural part of building engineering. She is passionate about creative
engineering solutions and she seeks to create a collaborative work environment to develop integrated
and innovative designs. In December 2014 she found an engineering consultancy which embodies her
passions for the built environment and the marketplace. Yasotha also involves herself with the academia
and industry bodies as much as she could; as she sees it as an honor and a privilege to able to contribute
towards upholding the industry.
During this talk Ir. Yasotha Chetty had explain why stability is a key component of a structural design of
buildings. The stability is a key component of structural design of buildings. As buildings become taller
and more complex, it becomes increasingly important that stability is adequately considered and
catered for. This lecture looks at the fundamentals of lateral stability for buildings, covering the
following: what is lateral stability, why is it increasingly important in Malaysia, components providing
lateral stability, type of loads, design criteria, the fundamental physics and design approach. Lateral
stability is commonly provided for a beam, a column, a steel or wood frame, or a wall with lateral
bracing. Lateral bracing is the structural component that prevents the beam or column from twisting or
buckling sideways or the structural component that prevents the steel frame, wood frame, or wall from
falling over.

The importance of stability and the resistance to horizontal forces imposed on a building often do not
receive the same attention as does the analysis for vertical forces. For all structures, it is essential that
there be a path passing through clearly defined structural members by which the stabilising forces and
horizontal forces may be transmitted to the foundations. Assumptions are often made in column design
which allow the effective heights to be reduced on the basis that one or both ends are ‘properly
restrained in position and direction’. These are often of doubtful validity
Furthermore, even we are taking Quantity Surveying course but these lectures have fulfilled the subject
of building services and environmental. We have getting know about Structural engineers are tasked
with designing and building structures that are safe under the expected loads throughout their intended
life. Stability is particularly important during the erection phase in the life of the structure, before it is
fully braced by its final cladding. The engineer is especially in- terested in that critical load magnitude
where the structure passes from a stable to an unstable configuration. The structure must be
proportioned so that the expected loads are smaller than this critical value by a safe margin.

Other than that, we also get the knowledge about the lateral stability for high rise building. The higher a
building is, the more important it is to consider the choice of cross- sections, materials and structural
systems as well as the demands on functionality. Factors that needs to be considered are deflections
and accelerations from horizontal loading that mainly occurs from unexpected deflections, wind or
earthquakes.
