9 11 Modelo 1936, por medio del adjunte boletíw No . 7-ES, que hemos arreglad o
en tal forma a fin de poder presentar con todo detalle este torno, que co n
tanto'éxito ha sido acogido por el mundo industrial . Las diferentes clase s
de transmisiones y equipos mostrados en el boletín han sido diseñados espe -
cialmente pata el "Workshop 11 .

Hemos dedicado exclusivamente algunas páginas del boletín 7-ES para ilus -
trar por medio de fotografías tomadas de la vida real, a algunos de los dife -
rentes y variados ramos en que los tornos South Bend 11 Workshop" son usados .

El torno 3outh Bend 11 Workshop" de 9f1 Modelo 1936, ha sido mejorado grande-
mente, es más fácil de operar, más resistente, y con la ;palanca que acciona el
nuevo mecanismo de inversión con engranajes gemelos se puede cambiar el sen -
tido del movimiento del tornillo guiador sin ninguna dificultad y sin pérdid a
.de tiempo .

of the day are keeping you very busy, and frankly, m y
consideration for you, ánd to some extent my modesty hav e
checked me many times from extending more frequently word s
of my high regard for you and wishes for your success an d
well being . However, I have heard it said, and as I ge t
older I really believe, that even the individual wit h
great burdens and responsibilities often find solace an d
comfort in expressions of admiration and kind thought s
from friends . Therefore, my brief' letter to you .

It has often occured to me that I have misse d

a great deal by the absence of circumstances and opportu-
nity to see you and talk with you . I find satisfactio n
however, in the urge that continuously haunts me to retur n
to Panama, and I know that when I do', and when many o f
your present duties and burdens of government are removed ,
you will grant me my wish .

This, lAr . President, is purely a personal letter .

I want only to inform you that I hold you in the highes t
esteem, and have every confidence that all your officia l
acts are motivated by unselfishness and service to Panama .
I have continually watched developments in the Republi c
through the newspapers, both Spanish and English, and I
have paid particular attention to your public utterances .

Beginning with the new year of 1936 the successful running of the racy sil k
industry in Panama is assured . Its certain high profitability is now attainabl e
through the appearance of a new textile machine which reeis raw silk automati-
cally from cocoons and dispenses with the need .of reeler girls . The raver sil k
produced by this machine is of a higher grade than the best hand reeled ones .

This new automatic silk reeler is comparatively simple . A photoelectric cel l

replaces the eyes of the reeler girls and new mechanical means replace he r
hands . The mechanical means add new cocoons to the running ones and remove th e
detached ones from the others . The photoelectric device takes care that thi s
adding and removal of cocoons is done at the right time for the obtainment o f
an even silk . It photographs the running .thread on a cell and at every diminu-
tion of its size actuates the mechanical means .

The writer of this letter is the inventor and owner of various patents o f
this new machine which is the only one of its kind in existence . Earlier model s
of it have produced a very high grade raw silk and the latest, improved an d
simplified model will, after its completion, produce even a still higher grad e
of racy silk .

Capital is available for the formation of a company to successfully establis h

the raw silk industry in Panama if the governement meets the situation part wa y
by granting lands for mulberry plantations in suitable sectors of the countr y
not too distant from a sea port, by a usual 10 years' tax exemption 'Ind by othe r
means which help to reduce the otherwise arduous task of this pioneering work .
These things need not be granted at once but only promised to be granted afte r
a successful demonstration of the new reeler at Panama City under the persona l
supervision of this writer .

The raising of cocoons constitutes only half the industry, the other half con-
sists in reeling them . Up to now this could never be done whether in Mexico ,
Central America nor Panama due to the absence of skilled-reeler labor . Novi i t
can Basely be done because this skilled reeler labor is no more needed .

Each machine of 20 yards length contains 40 units, reels 40 threads of sil k

and replaces 10 reeler girls . Their production of a superior grade of raw sil k
is accounted for by the fact that mechanical and photoelectrical means wor k
more accurately and reliably than the most skilled reeler girls .

The governement has only to gain, and nothing to lose, by such concessio n
 0

promises and we, on our part, will gladly reciprocate by taking good care tha t
the governement will be pleased by our pioneering work in spreading the raw sil k
industry throughout the suitable sectors of Panama .

In order to insure success through absolute reliance and stability in the en-
terprise please have the governement issue the promises "to the american corpo-
ration in which Mr . John A . Scheibli, the inventor of the new automatic sil k
reeling machine, owns the controlling stocks" . This will keep the inventor un -
removably at the helm of the enterprise and as he is also an authority on ra w
silk with a background of 35 years of experience of which part was spent in th e
Far East it forms a guaranty for the success of it which might be jeopardize d
by a change in personelle which might result if the inventor did not own th e
controlling stocks .

•• SILK REELING RADICALLY CHANGED ,

tl '' elijg unchanged through five thousand years, bows to the per-
flue'ca of the century of progress . A new bethod has been deve-
~~ 1 a `%' epoch making ; opening the way for establishing the raw sil k
y innumerable parts of the world where its introduction has .been
e heretofore, due to the lack of skilled reeling labor .

The new method eliminates such labor and produces a higher grade of ra w
silk than the trade has over known . Cocoons, instead of being in basins ,
are reeled directly from individual cocoon receptacles, in which the coo -
coons float in a maintained bath of hot treating liquidp and the receptac -
les are automatically supplied to a reeling point whenever the additio n
of a cocoon becomes necessary . The added cocoon fibers are automaticall y
connected to the fibers being reeled ; no manual operation being require d
beyond the 'initial placing of a cocoon in its receptacle and the attachin g
of its fiber to a hook .
The machine and method comprise an invention that is destined to revolu-
tionize the raw silk industry . Up to about ten years ago it had been con -
sidered impossible to handle cocoons mechanically . Since then numerous at -
tempts have been made to mechanize silk reeling but all have met with fai-
lure, and even though a practical apparatus of that kind had been develope d
the silk produced by it would°have been inferior, for all efforts were di -
rected to mechanical replacement of cocoons which in itself never produce s
an even thread . For the obtainment of an even silk it becomes necessary t o
frequently add fibers to the running . ones "before" any of the cocoons has
become disengaged . The frequency of this necessity is due to the thread' s
tendency to run finer at the end-tapering of its fibers .

In the present hand manipulation of cocoons skilled reeling consists in

adding fresh cocoons "as neéded" to provide a substantially uniform siz e
of thread, with the addition being governed entirely by the "judgement" o f
the operator . Only by the latter's closest attention to each reeling threa d
and keeping it constcntly . .up .to size can=a-high grade-raw silk be-produced ,
Such a "thread gauging" and "size maintenance" is accomplished "automatical -
ly" in the new method and the machine by which it is practiced .

The machine employs a tiny spiral track down which the individual cocoo n
receptacles, in the form of small care, are allowed to run by gravity upo n
being released from a loading station . The release mechanism is automatical-
ly operated by a decrease in size of the thread being reeled as it registers
on photo-electrical means by which the thread size is automatically maintai -
ned . The fiber of the cocoon in each receptacle car is automatically attache d
to the thread being reeled as the car moves down the track which is arrange d
spirally around the reeling fibers so that the fiber fróm the cocoon in a
descending car winds itself on to them . !deans are provided for automaticall y
trimming off all trailing ends .

The machine is a marvel of simplicity and is capabl e . of being adjusted to .

'provide for reeling all standard sizes as well as ell odd ones, The entir e
action is automatic, and,the - thread size is constantly kept_at a predeter-
mined .thiokness through regulating means operated by the running thread .

The invention i.s protected by patent in Mexico, No . 34,105 of June 10th

19331 and patents are pending in other foreign countries and in the Unite d
Sfltee .

I have made numerous inquiries regarding th e

type of boat you specify . -It is quite unlikely that a Diese l
Engine drive can be found down here . The largest gasolin e
yacht I know .of now is a launch forty feet in length, on whic h
specifications are hereto attached .

I am informed by friends familiar with the boat

market in Miami, that Diesels are not available and that th e
cost of a Diesel and installation may run to '1500 .00 or more .

It is possible that I shall have more informa-

Construction details :

Hull - one inch mahogany planked . Very heavily framed . Boat was built by Lawle y
men in a private yard at Revere, Mass . This cruiser has beautiful running line s
and is an excellent sea boat, due to the beam of 12 ft ., giving the hull consider -
able flare forward . Raised deck forward is supplemented by trunk cabin, givin g
considerable head room . There are two fresh water tanks, one 100-gallon tab k
located starboard side of engine compartment and one 80-gallon tank located unde r
berth in after cabin . Water system so arrangedethat after water tank supplie s
shower bath with fresh water, also acts as reserve tank to main 100-gallon tank i n
engine room .

10 ft . dinghey is carried on roof of after cabin' .Flush deck aft equipped with two
wannan++ker type fishing chairs . A detachable canopy protects this after deck .
Deckhouse is sunken, giving the'Sue-J low lines and excellent balance . Deckhous e
roof carries two trusses running fore and aft, supporting all oarlings and placin g
roof load on fore and aft ends of deckhouse . Deckhouse is very commodious .


As an example of the Sue- i t s seaworthiness, she has cruised from Miami to Havan a
and return ; from Miami to Vassau and return ; and has made numerous trips to th e

Kitchenkook Range with full size oven below, which Range is baked white enamel .
Monel lining entirely around stove and galley sides, with flue to carry off hea t
and fumes . An additional icebox of 200 lbs . capacity is located directly acros s
from the galley .

The SUE-J is less than five years old and has never been without a captain aboard .
She has been kept in splendid condition, having been entirely refinished last summer ,
at vh ich time she was dressed down to the wood and over :$600 spent. on refinishing
alone .

The Sue=J t s bottom lines are very seaworthy and easy running as she is sharp forwar d
and quite full aft and is of hollow keel construction . The Sue-J is accessibl e
entirely around her cabin sides, carrying a very heavy and high mahogany rai l
extending from the raised deck section and carried clear around the boat .
